StockX

1) Description

StockX  (3.2-4% Extrabux Cashbackis an online marketplace and clothing reseller, primarily of sneakers. It was started in 2015, by Dan Gilbert, Greg Schwartz, Josh Luber and Chris Kaufman in pursuit of creating a sneaker resale market.

Four years down the line, the platform now offers more than just sneakers. You can also buy handbags, watches, and streetwear. Since November 2020, it has also opened up to electronic products such as game consoles, smartphones and computer hardware.

StockX has more than 800 employees in Downtown Detroit. StockX currently has international offices in London, UK, in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and has authentication facilities in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood, Moonachie, NJ, and Tempe, AZ.

StockX operates much like the actual stock market, allowing users to buy and sell at whatever price they agree upon while giving users real-time feedback on what their sneakers are being bought and sold for. StockX has effectively consolidated resell prices into one effective resource for deciding how much you should sell or buy shoes for.

2) Product Category

Items You Can Buy or Sell: Sneakers (New deadstock condition sneakers including the adidas Yeezy, NMD, Ultra Boost, Retro Jordans, Nike and more), Electronics, Streetwear, Collectibles, Luxury Handbags, Luxury Watches and track changes in its value.

3) Authentification Process

The portal operates as a middleman between buyer and seller, aiming to ensure that all sneakers are authentic and unworn. Once a sneaker is bought, it's shipped to the company's Detroit HQ, where it's legitimacy-checked and approved for sale. Only then is it sent to the buyer.

Josh Luber revealed, "We approach this systematically from every angle possible. We acquire fake sneakers, break them down, document everything, create training manuals and literally have authenticator classes. We use all sorts of technology, include weight and density tools. We have apprenticeship, mentoring and heirarchial programs to ensure that people are trained, the right shoes goes to the right people and we are constantly learning. And because we see tens of thousands of sneakers per week, we are constantly fine tuning and improving our knowledge base, processes and people."

StockX defines "Deadstock" as an authentic, new, unworn pair of sneakers. They are complete with original box including the box lid and the box label indicating the shoe size, as would be acceptable for sale at a retail location.“Deadstock”sneakers also may or may not include additional accessories (such as laces) that were included in the original packaging at purchase. We do currently have a limited selection of B-grades on their site right now, which you can find here. At this time they do not accept any Factory Seconds.

GOAT implements a“ship-to-verify”model that uses machine learning to verify the authenticity of the sneakers on its platform. In 2019, the platform expanded into new markets and categories to offer luxury and streetwear apparel and accessories in addition to secondhand products. GOAT has partnered with several luxury brands, including Versace, Chloe, and Bergdorf Goodman.

In February 2018, GOAT and Flight Club announced their merger, creating an omni-channel approach for the business. The brands operate independently, as GOAT focuses on mobile and web listings, while Flight Club focuses on global retail and e-commerce consignment. 3) Authentification Process

Sourcing from the world's premium boutiques and retailers, as well as the selected network of resellers,  they aim to only sell authentic, high-quality products.

Once a purchase is made, sellers ship the sneakers to GOAT for verification and, if they're authenticated, the sneakers are then shipped on to the buyer.

The resale products are verified by means such as machine learning technology, digital authentication, in-hand verification, or a combination of the same. Their team of authentication specialists goes through mandatory training and inspects details from the label to stitching, texture to color, and so much more. They have logged over 75,000 sneakers in our database and have accounted data on each to help us define their authenticity.

4) Buying Guide

It's very safe to buy with GOAT. GOAT aims to be the most trusted marketplace for sneakers, apparel, and accessories. That's why, if a purchased item does not ultimately meet the standards,  they can offer you support through their buyer Protection Policy.

The Buyer Protection Policy enables them to better serve their customers by providing help and assistance both prior to purchase and after. With the Buyer Protection Policy, each shipping method is covered equally to ensure you feel safe ordering from any one of their selling methods.

Whether it’s through GOAT Credit or a full refund, if something goes wrong with your order, they want to help fix it.

In which situations does the Buyer Protection Policy apply?

The Buyer Protection Policy ensures coverage for you, the buyer, in the event your item is:

  • received and deemed as inauthentic;

  • received, but is the incorrect item;

  • received, but does not match the item description or images;

  • received, but is missing a key feature;** or never delivered.

5) Seller Program & Fees

Only when an item is purchased, is a commission fee charged. GOAT charges a 9.5 commission for sellers plus a nominal seller fee ($5 for United States-based accounts). The commission fee will be deducted from the seller’s listing price. Commission fees are increased and can reach 25 percent if you receive a lot of cancellations.

In addition, there's an additional cash-out fee of 2.9 percent when earnings are deposited via an ACH direct deposit or PayPal. Unlike on StockX, where PayPal deposits go through automatically after verification, with GOAT the cash-out process is done manually.

2) Product Category

Selling with Flight Club is the easiest way to move your new and lightly worn sneakers. With their network of retail stores in New York, Los Angeles and Miami, in addition to a premier online experience, Flight Club offers the best liquidity and sell-through in the game, at the most competitive prices available anywhere.

3) Authentification Process

Flight Club operates on straightforward model: sellers bring their sneakers to the store's Los Angeles or New York locations, have them authenticated, and then have them listed at an agreed price. Buyers can shop both online or at the physical stores, where the inventory ranges from below-retail general release kicks to hyped, ultra-rare sneakers.

Whereas other services such as GOAT and StockX authenticate sneakers during the buying and selling phase, Flight Club authenticates items before taking them into its inventory, which means no delays when it comes to shipping.

4) Seller Program & Fees

Once you've registered, here's the selling process:

  • Create a submission on sell.flightclub.com for the shoes you want to sell.

  • Once received, we process and verify your sneakers' authenticity. We then list them across our network of selling channels - including our retail stores, flightclub.com, goat.com and the GOAT app.

  • When your shoe sells, you can request a digital payout via PayPal or through a bank transfer on sell.flightclub.com.

Flight Club is a consignment store, so they do take a chunk out of the final selling price. The commission fee is 9.5% plus a $5 seller fee. When you decide to cash out, there is an additional 2.9% cash out fee.

5) Shipping Method

Delivery and processing speeds vary by pricing options. "Lowest Price" orders ship to Flight Club first for verification and typically take 7-9 days (M-F) to reach you. "Fastest To You" orders will be shipped out the same day if ordered by 2PM ET (M-F, excluding holidays) and typically take 2-5 days (M-F) to reach you. Estimated delivery times do not apply to international orders, which vary by country.

Conclusion

  • StockX

The allure of receiving guaranteed authentic sneakers is a big selling point, which is why StockX has become so popular. While the costs are relatively high - for both buyers and sellers - you can rest easy knowing you’ll be getting the real deal. If you’re looking for worn product, look elsewhere.

  • Flight Club

 If you like browsing in physical stores and holding the product in your hands before deciding to splash the cash - especially with sneakers that resell for absurd amounts - Flight Club might be the portal for you. However, the relatively high cut the business takes for itself might put off those selling low profit margin sneakers or looking to make a quick buck.

  • GOAT

GOAT is best for those who want the flexibility to sell both used and new sneakers but also appreciate the middleman service the most reputable portals offer. Think of it as a mix of Grailed and StockX. It does, however, still have its pitfalls and is by no means a perfect system.

  • Stadium Goods

What's good about Stadium Goods is that it does a lot of the heavy lifting for you, listing your items online, in-store, and on eBay, Amazon, GOAT, TMALL (Alibaba), and via other channels. In exchange, though, you pay a premium consignment fee of 20 percent. If you’re willing to put in the work, it might be better to list your item yourself elsewhere. Buyers should be aware that prices will be higher, but can rest assured that what they buy has been legitimacy-checked.
