Supreme vs. Off-White vs. BAPE vs. PALACE: Which is the Best Streetwear Brand 2024?

Supreme vs. Off-White vs. BAPE vs. PALACE: Which is the Best Streetwear Brand 2024?

Streetwear, like t-shirt and hoodie have been around since the 1990s, slowly integrating into the fashion industry and turning casual weekend wardrobes into tastefully curated fits has spread throughout mainstream culture. Streetwear originated on the coast of California and has a culture of ice skating and surfing. And it eventually merged with hip-hop culture, Japanese street fashion, and of course the world of haute couture. Streetwear’s juggernauts, from Supreme and BAPE, to Off-White and PALACE, have taken the movement from the streets to the proper fashion system, but which brand is the best streetwear brand? Why is Supreme expensive? Is Off-White a good brand? Is Bape a luxury brand? Why is Palace so popular? Well let's dig a little deeper below with some history and comparison between the these four brands from history, price, design and quality so you can decide once and for all.

  • Supreme

Supreme Brand History and Origin

Supreme is an American clothing and skateboarding lifestyle brand established in New York City in April 1994. The brand is targeted at the skateboarding and hip hop cultures, and youth culture in general.

Supreme was started when a man named James Jebbia opened the company's flagship store in Manhattan, paving the way for the burgeoning skateboard scene in New York City. The store would eventually become somewhat of a counterculture mecca for young artists, skaters, musicians, neighborhood kids, and more. The brand produces clothes and accessories and also manufactures skateboards.

Supreme releases new products through their retail locations around the world as well as their website on Thursday mornings in Europe and America, and on Saturday mornings in Japan. The Supreme brand is popular in China, Japan, Europe and the US. Supreme is owned by VF Corporation.

Supreme releases two collections each year. Instead of offering the entire line at once, the brand releases a few pieces online and in-store from the current season's collection every Thursday.

Supreme Design & Style

What started as a few simple t-shirts and hoodies for the skaters of NYC eventually morphed into a worldwide phenomenon, and Supreme has proved time and time again that their clothes are not just for skaters. The label itself is now one of the most recognizable brands in the fashion and skate industry, and thanks to their collaborations with designers like Gucci and Louis Vuitton, as well as brands like The North Face, Levi's, and Nike, consumers around the world have begun to view skating culture in a new light.

In the past, people in the fashion scene dismissed Supreme as just simple skate-wear. Nowadays, it is now lauded as one of the coolest and highly coveted streetwear brands in the world. They have become a major face in the fashion industry, and they're getting them left and right with ease.

Supreme is something of an underground fashion brand that it only lets people who have "earned" their right to shop in their stores. For many it is their secret club, their secret society, and their fashion bible. The brand itself has even become an enigmatic code.

Supreme Quality - Material & Durability

Supreme have been a lot of controversies about the quality the brand is made of.  Is Supreme Clothing Good Material?  If you compare Supreme to most other brands of streetwear, you'll find that there is homogeneity to other companies that Supreme doesn't have. Supreme uses different manufacturing and supplier sites. But some of their products are manufactured in Canada and the US while others are made in China.

From my own experienced and review of some other Supreme fans, it can be deduced that some of the brand's clothing is made of good materials while others are made of average quality materials. There are times you buy the clothing, and it feels thin to the extent you can almost see through the material, but there are the thick ones too. For example, the Supreme hoodie is made from a high-quality silk material, which implies that it is long lasting and quite durable. For the Supreme clothing, the stitches are appropriately aligned with no rough edges because they are well stitched by professional tailors. Additionally, the logo of the Supreme has an Eye-catching effect. Though it may have a dull look, the letters are stuck on the material to bring out that fashion sense from the clothing material.

  • Off-White

Off-White Brand History and Origin

Off-White (stylized as Off-White™ or OFF-WHITE c/o VIRGIL ABLOH) is an Italian luxury fashion label founded by American designer Virgil Abloh.

The company was first founded as "PYREX VISION" by Virgil Abloh in the Italian city of Milan in 2012. Abloh then rebranded the company as Off-White, which he described as "the grey area between black and white as the color off-white" to the fashion world. It has shown collections at Paris Fashion Week shows, and is sold in retail stores in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Milan, London, United Kingdom and New York.

In August 2019, José Neves, owner of FARFETCH, purchased New Guards Group, the parent organization of Off-White. Virgil Abloh, on the establishment of Off White, said,“In a large part streetwear is seen as cheap. What my goal has been is to add an intellectual layer to it and make it credible”.

Off-White Not only has Off-White been prevalent in the music industry, the brand has also worked with major brands such as Nike, Supreme, Levi, Jimmy Choo, IKEA, Browns, Warby Parker, SSENSE, Louis Vuitton, Sunglass Hut, Champion, Vans, Converse, Umbro and Timberland.

Off-White Category & Price: Accessories $93 - $1360; Activewear: $320 - $765; Bags: $335 -$2735; Clothing: $245 - $4338; Homeware: $60 - $1330; Jewelry: $195 - $755; Shoes: $158 - $1335; Underwear & Socks: $75 - $815.

Off-White Design & Style

Abloh's architectural background is evident in Off–White's design philosophy. The iconography pays homage to America's urban cities: white arrows, diagonal lines, industrial yellow, and black. His designs flaunt streetwear in a unique light, one that he states in the brand's name and mission statement as ‘defining the grey area between black and white’.  The Off White brand serves as a common ground between premium fashion and streetwear. Abloh's desire to “put the skateboard–and–graffiti urban style that comprised his childhood in a revered position” has not manifested itself in his customer base, which comprises predominantly of wealthy millennials

Off-White scales into a“truly multi-line brand,” requires, well, multiple lines. As such, the label has been venturing into new categories, including home decor and childrenswear. Whereas Abloh's homeware is minimalist, sophisticated, and literally off-white in color, his new kids collection offers a vibrant take on street fashion, with camo and checkered racing patterns splashed onto bite-sized apparel.

The Off White brand also has collaborated with many famous brands in the music and fashion industry. More interestingly, Off-White has started to dabble outside of its too-cool-for-school aesthetic. Between Abloh's more“grown up”AW21 show in Paris and his potential bridal offerings, the designer clearly isn't afraid to redefine the brand beyond streetwear and cater to a maturing audience.

Off-White Quality - Material & Durability

By all standards, Off-White is considered to be on the threshold of being a luxury brand with the hefty price tags on their items. Off-White are too expensive for the average millennial to afford. (On Net-a-Porter, an Off-White graphic T-shirt is priced at $280, and hoodies can go for more than $500.) The designer admits that he gets this question (or critique) a lot, and from the multiple answers going through his head, he managed to strike up a fair argument: "Your health is tied to that - a 99-cent nugget," explains Abloh. He goes on to mention the costs that come with sustaining a high-quality brand: customs and duties with shipping product, buying luxury fabric and paying employees a healthy wage, for example.

Off-White is produced in Portugal, Italy and rarely Romania. Sometimes you might see“Made in UE” written on an authentic wash tag. All these are legit. There's also the question of streetwear's longevity. It is hard for any streetwear brands to be a classic item or to be something that you would want to actually keep or value for a long time. The taste and style of streetwear are constantly evolving, so brands need to keep up with changes constantly.

  • BAPE

Brand History and Origin

A Bathing Ape(or BAPE, for short) is one of the longest-standing names in hip-hop fashion. It is a Japanese fashion brand founded by Nigo in Ura-Harajuku in 1993. This designer, producer, drummer and DJ has been an active part of the Teriyaki Boyz, a Japanese hip-pop group hailing from Yokohama that contributed to the OST of Fast & Furious - Tokyo Drift. The name, theme and logo of BAPE serves as reference to the 1968 sci-fi classic, Planet of the Apes.

Ever since its conception, BAPE has become synonymous with street wear (clothes, shoes and accessories). The brand got constant shoutouts in the 2000s from early-days Lil' Wayne, Pharrell and Clipse, and still gets nods from the likes of Future, Drake and 21 Savage. The brand also spawned an alternate line called Aape which is a collection of more casual clothing from A Bathing Ape and focuses on comfort and lighter materials. Another line called Mr. Bathing Ape sticks to slightly more premium stuff and shirts etc.

The brand specializes in men's, women's and children's lifestyle and street wear, running 19 stores in Japan, including Bape Stores, Bape Pirate Stores, Bape Kids Stores, Bapexclusive Aoyama, and Bapexclusive Kyoto. Today, There are also stores located in Hong Kong, Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Qingdao, Shenyang, Seoul, Jakarta, Dubai, New York City, Kuala Lumpur, London, Paris, Miami and Los Angeles.

BAPE Category & Price: Accessories: $34 - $1204; Activewear $254 - $2074; Bags $109 - $477; Clothing $93 - $5723; Shoes: $121 - $11445.

BAPE Design & Style

BAPE has made a name for itself with bright, bold toy-inspired graphics,  laidback persona and youthful free spirit and off-beat designs (epitomized by their face-covering shark hoodies). The late ’90s to early ’00s are generally cited as the golden era of BAPE, with product rapidly selling out in Japan and fashion-savvy figures like The Notorious B.I.G. giving the brand some healthy kudos in hip-hop culture. Its success was coupled with a greater attention being paid to BAPE stateside, though the brand remained scarce due to the absence of American stockists.

The BAPE Camo, also known as the‘Cloud Camo’, the iconic BAPE Camo print is perhaps the most fascinating element of the brand, as a graphic which has totally transcended streetwear to become one of the most iconic motifs of the past two decades. Alongside a handful of items like the Bapesta, camo outerwear and legendary lifestyle products, the BAPE Shark hoodie is probably one of the most iconic garments in A Bathing Ape history. First released in 2004, its outlandish design and slew of unique details really pushed that idea of BAPE as offering something that you couldn't get anywhere else. It was a perfect blend of timely stylishness and quirky gimmicks that meant anyone wearing it was destined to turn heads.

Bape frequently collaborates with other brands and features characters from popular media such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Marvel comics characters, Nintendo, DC Comics, and Hello Kitty and the Sanrio Family. These designs are used throughout the Bathing Ape range, on goodies, accessories, hoodies, jackets, T-shirts and shoes.

After the acquisition by I.T Ltd and the leave of Nigo, BAPE has catered more and more to it's Chinese and Taiwanese audience, further transforming itself from an exclusive and experimental streetwear brand into something that more resembles a higher-end affordable luxury flex piece

BAPE Quality - Material & Durability

Japanese brands in general tend to focus more on the creative aspect of their work rather than making a quick buck right off the bat. This is the reason why Japanese brands take longer time to scale globally.

BAPE is an expensive brand for many people, and that tongue-in-cheek treatment of its customer just ended up also being one of its strongest appeals. There are a few BAPE items that sell out quickly and they're hard to keep in stock. The high demand is what allows the brand to raise the price and as long as people are willing to pay the price it's going to stay high.

Bape has good quality overall. Tee's are pretty thick & parka's/hoodies have a heavy weight with nice material. Felt material on Tigers, sharks, panda's etc faces is nice quality & stitch. The thing with BAPE though, these days at least, is that none of that is really the case. The quality, though still good compared to your average mall brand, is really nothing special. And as for its reputation in Japan, BAPE is hardly an exceptional label. Paying $300 retail for a BAPE hoodie is actually not the standard.

  • PALACE

PALACE Brand History and Origin

Palace Skateboards is a London-based skateboarding and clothing brand established in 2009. The brand was primarily heavily worn by founder Levent Tanju and his skate team, Palace Wayward Boys Choir. Lev wanted to make clothes that made his friends feel more comfortable while skating

Tanju wanted a triangular theme for his newly created brand. The logo was created by Marc Jacobs design director, Fergus "Fergadelic" Purcell. Purcell wanted to make a logo that had connotations of the infinite and of constant flux and movement. Purcell used a Penrose triangle with the word 'Palace' written on each side. The logo is referred to as the "Tri-Ferg Logo."

After achieving some recognition, the brand went on to collaborate with Umbro in late 2012, Reebok in late 2013, and Adidas in late 2014. Alongside these collaborations, Palace depended on the Dover Street Market, End Clothing and occasional pop-up shops around England to stock and distribute their merchandise.

With its 4 flagship stores located in London, Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Palace is a genuine niche brand that has driven all streetwear lovers crazy.

PALACE Category & Price: Accessories $37-$536 ; Bags $53 - $152; Clothing (Hoodies & sweaters) $53 -$536.

PALACE Design & Style

Palace is unmistakably different - from the witty Brtitishisms to the unique blend of track hoodies and jacets. This luxury skate brand best known for its irreverent personality and antics. It can boast respectable competitors such as Supreme, and BAPE. They've benefitted by trodding a path that Supreme blazed, as a skate brand with mainstream appeal, hype and commercial success.

You can tell by talking to Gareth Skewis, co-founder of Palace Skateboards, that he believes necessity, diversity and authenticity are the great, enduring style principles. Skewis and Lev Tanju have used these core beliefs to create the most exciting brand in streetwear over the past decade. They have done it smoothly, convincingly and unpretentiously. In short, they really didn't try all that hard, and that's entirely the point. No fashion expert or designer, no marketing department, and no PR. Palace is produced and distributed by the same people who want to wear it and their friends. Combining influences from early noughties club culture and video games with a flamboyant colour palette, Palace's designs are sure to raise eyebrows in the peloton and far beyond. From fashion to hip-hop, no legit skate brand gets this much play in such a diverse range of circles. Each collaboration is unique, curious, and undoubtedly ill. There's no shaking it; and that's what makes Palace so appealing.

Palace launches new products every Friday morning during their five seasonal periods: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Ultimo. The rising brand has gained popularity within the streetwear community for its uniqueness and limited availability. Demand for Palace items can often outweigh supply, resulting in items being resold for significant margins.

PALACE Quality - Material & Durability

Palace is a brand that is in it for the long haul. While its core skate roots and unmistakably gritty video style will no doubt ensure it retains a strong following among skaters, past seasons have seen the brand grow much bigger.

Constructed from a 100% cotton jersey, their 3M Tee has a reflective 3M logo print at the chest and back, finished off with a ribbed collar. The quality of Palace is worth it, but spending money when you don't have much isn't. Fashion doesn't have to cost an arm and leg.

Palace crew members share a passion for the underground and glitches. Called "Palace Waywards Boys Choir", their productions were skateboards sold exclusively in London, but worldwide success came thanks to the group of fan partners, and supporters who wearing their pieces increased the hype around the brand.

  • Conclusion

Supreme vs. Off-White vs. BAPE vs. PALACE: which wins the Streetwear Brand Showdown? There is no short answer to this question, since all these brands are hugely popular and have their own loyal following and people (ie. fanboys) who love them both for the uniqueness they offer.

Supreme

Supreme is undoubtedly one of the most popular and iconic skate brands in the world. From celebrities and athletes to your neighbor, it seems like everyone from all walks of life has been sporting and supporting the brand for years. Supreme is preferred for its ability to stay ahead of the fashion curve and create products that define fashion. It is simple and straightforward. It has the entire“exclusive” and“limited edition”things going for it. They've done an amazing job of limiting quantities and under-producing to the demand. By ditching the ordinary supply-and-demand model, Supreme allowed the resale market to dictate prices.

Off-White

Off-White is known for their crossed arrow logo combine with their industrial style. Supreme was once considered the king of street-style, but now there are more brands popping up that are giving them a run for their money. Off-White is a good brand from the outlook. As a luxury streetwear brand, the only snag especially the clothing is that it comes at an outrageous price. There are some items on Off-White's website that can be bought right now, but Supreme only does certain releases every week with very limited quantities where they only have a very small amount of product available and they sell out extremely fast.

BAPE

BAPE was one of the first fashion labels to create products encompassing every corner of everyday life, allowing streetwear fans to literally live a BAPE-branded lifestyle. It's a popular Japanese street fashion brand. The brand derives its name from the indulgent, opulent and lazy lifestyle of the Japanese youth. In general BAPE is geared towards and has been heavily influenced by the hip-hop culture, while Supreme is heavily influenced by the skateboarding culture with some hip-hop and punk rock influences. Most of Supreme items are slightly cheaper than Bape, though Supreme has bigger demand so limited items can be sold a lot more especially if you're trying to buy resell. Bape items was harder to find and buy since most of their stuff are sold from Japan, though now, you can easily buy most of Bape stuff online.

PALACE

Palace's combination of elevated skater style, UK streetwear and a sense of humor has yielded some of the coolest skate clothing to date. Aesthetically, Palace is instantly recognizable thanks to its tri-ferg logo, sporty basics and bold statement pieces. Palace is preferred by people who skateboard and are now looking for fashion products from a brand they can trust. Some people prefer Palace because the placement and size of box logos by Supreme are not preferred by them. Palace is more culture-oriented than Supreme according to some customers. Palace is gaining popularity among the younger generation because of its unique styles and the commitment to offer something new.
