How About Guicci Loafers

Since the loafer's inception in the early 20th century, when the durable leather slip-on shoe was workwear amongst Norwegian farmers and fishermen, loafer styles have been designed with comfort in mind. But Guccio Gucci, founder of the Italian fashion house Gucci, saw potential beyond the shoe's pragmatism. It also had significant sartorial appeal.

So in 1953, after opening their first U.S.-based boutique in New York, the House of Gucci launched their signature loafer featuring a metal horse-bit front detail inspired by the equestrian shoes of the British aristocracy. The padded insole and low heel made them a hit amongst businessmen and academia, but movie stars and style icons like Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy gravitated towards Gucci's sleek, unassuming loafer as part of their everyday footwear. In 1985 their popularity landed them a spot in the permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

2.Gucci Jordaan Leather Loafers

Review: The Gucci Jordaan was named after an upscale locality in Amsterdam, where many contemporary art galleries are located. The collection is a modern take on the epochal design with sleeker lines, a streamlined silhouette, and slightly elongated toes. Every shoe is approached by hands and topped with the signature Horsebit. The style has been depicted in legions of exotic skins, materials, and hardware.

The Jordaan loafers are so versatile, that they themselves have stood the test of time and inspired designers to experiment with its elements that are loved by all — case in point, the Princetown collection.

Indeed, Jordaan is the reimagined version of the Horsebit, but today they enjoy as much love and admiration as the classic design adding more value to the collection. They are better suited to cater to a vast audience — be it young, old, trendy, or classic as they retain the classical elements and bring forth designs that appeal to different palettes.

Review: The Founder of Gucci loved horses and equestrianism, so in 1953 the company created a type of loafer as inspiration. The 1953 Horsebit (or Bit) Loafer is a type of loafer or moccasin that has a distinctive metal bit that resembles the horse’s snaffle. It soon took the world by storm an eventually found itself somehow bridging the gap between casual and business wear as a refined, dressy slip on.

A pair of minimalist loafers are an essential part of your wardrobe because they are versatile enough to suit a whole load of outfits, and will look eternally stylish, no matter how trends change.

These Gucci Women’s and men's 1953 Horsebit loafers are a perfect example- The shoes are finished with a delicate gold horsebit, in the middle of which sits the GG logo. These beautiful, timeless shoes retail for just $920.

4.Gucci Princetown Leather Loafers

Official Price: $860

Colorways:  2 colors

Size: US 4 - 12(women's)

Review:  Since its debut in the Fall/Winter 2015 collection, the Gucci Princetown slippers have become one of the most iconic shoes for Gucci, wonder why? Because they will give you that comfort feeling, that home feeling that your feet love so much. Featuring an almond toe, a branded insole, a horsebit detail, a check pattern and a low heel.

Princetown mules, while not the most feminine, have a certain irresistible charm. With their almond-shaped toe, a heel measuring around 1cm and the iconic horsebit plaque adornment, they convey a demure and classic feel which makes the shoes a very versatile and wearable item, perfect for office and everyday wear.

Gucci offers Princetown mules in a vast array of colour and finish options, including embroidered leather, raffia and of course the lamb wool-lined variety. One thing of note is that Princetown mules are to be worn mainly barefoot so the initial outings may result in some mild foot and toe rubbing while the shoes are still new.

Gucci Brixton vs. Jordaan vs. 1953 Horsebit vs. Princetown Comparison Side by Side

1.Stlye

  • Brixton

The Brixton is an absolute classic! It’s the perfect shaped loafer in my opinion as it looks classy, minimal, stylish, and smart, but it can also be worn casually.

  • Jordaan

The one thing that attracted me to this particular design over the Jordaan is the fact that the back is collapsible, so you can wear these as a slip on mule as well as a loafer with a back. The gold Horsebit design across the top is classic of Gucci, and they’re just absolutely perfect! The stitching is perfect and beautiful, and the minimal design is so versatile!

  • Horsebit

We love the elegant and sophisticated look of these Gucci  Horsebit Loafers, the perfect shoes for any formal or work outfit.

The striking loafers are crafted from luxe black leather and feature a 1-inch heel, making them super comfortable to walk around in all day.

  • Princetown

An essential Gucci style since its debut in the Fall Winter 2015 fashion show, the Princetown slipper is presented in black leather. The mule design features the distinctive gold-toned Horsebit, an archival symbol inspired by the equestrian world.

2.Quality

  • Brixton

This version of Gucci's classic 'Brixton' loafers has collapsible heels, so they can be worn two different ways. Made in Italy from soft black leather, they're embellished with the house's signature green and red webbing and topped with burnished-gold horsebits borrowed from the original 1953 design.

  • Jordaan

Gucci's iconic 'Jordaan' loafers will work with just about anything in your wardrobe. Crafted from impeccably smooth leather, this pair has a gold horsebit embellishment, a slight heel for lift and sleek almond toe.

  • Horsebit

The perfect hybrid between casual and dress wear, Gucci's Horsebit loafer was always a step ahead. Fifty years after their debut, it's no wonder that the shoe style remains a fashion cult classic and a worthy investment piece.

  • Princetown

The shoe has a leather sole, so if you want added protection you can take them to a cobbler before wear.

Like any new designer shoe, they are a little stiff initially. I personally didn’t find them to be uncomfortable or give me any blisters out of the box, but I have heard others say they’re uncomfortable until you break them in.

3.Fit and Sizing

  • Brixton

According to Gucci and many retailers’ websites, the Brixton loafers run true to size, and If you have wide feet, I’d highly recommend sizing half size up.

  • Jordaan

In general Gucci shoes typically run true to size to a half a size smaller. While the flats and loafers tend to run true to size, the shoes with heels tend to run a half size smaller depending on the style.

  • Horsebit

I recommended getting them a half size down as the leather will stretch. I usually wear a 38 but for these, the Gucci Jordaan loafers, my go-to is a 37.5. I can literally wear them all day and have many times.

  • Princetown

Princetown mules provide a decent, standard fit ideal for average width feet. Although they wrap them in a relatively snug fashion, this should reasonably be expected from this type of design as otherwise the foot would slip during walking.

Gucci recommends to size up a half size in this shoe.

Tips: It’s best to try Gucci  loafers on before purchasing, but if you can’t or if you’re confident with your designer shoe size go ahead and order online. Double-check the return/exchange policy just in case.

4.Comfortable

  • Brixton

Now the leather was what sold me on the Gucci Brixton in the first place! We remember always looking at them in the boutiques and feeling the back of the heel. It’s like butter! The leather is so soft and pliable because it’s needed for making it collapsible, making the comfort level beyond amazing!

  • Jordaan

First hitting the shelves in the 1950s, this apron-toe leather loafer polished with a goldtone horsebit pairs well with both casual and more polished outfits. Blake construction ensures comfortable flexibility and lasting durability.

  • Horsebit

Goldtone horsebit hardware - a signature since the '50s—polishes this apron-toe leather loafer designed with a collapsible heel that converts the look to a mule.

  • Princetown

The shoes are VERY comfortable which attests to their continuing popularity. Personally, I did not feel the need to stretch or break them in to make them more roomy, even though this is frequently recommended in other reviews. I guess all depends on individual foot shape. It is noticeable that with time, the leather stretches naturally and the snug fit gently loosens making the Gucci mules even more comfortable.

Conclusion: Which Should You Buy?

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with the 4 Gucci Loafers . Since they’re all comfortable, stylish, and well-made, which one you pick will most likely depend on your personal preference, plus a few additional factors, such as:

  • If you prefer a closed back loafer, I would go with the Brixton. I’ve read a couple reviews saying the leather on the Brixton is a little softer and more pliable than on the Jordaan, so is a little more comfortable.

  • If you prefer the look of mules, I’d go with the Princetown. Even though the Brixton loafer is listed as convertible (which sounds ideal in theory!), when the back of the heel is folded down it doesn’t look polished, like it’s being unintentionally smooshed down.

  • The perfect hybrid between casual and dress wear, Gucci's Horsebit loafer was always a step ahead. Fifty years after their debut, it's no wonder that the shoe style remains a fashion cult classic and a worthy investment piece.

  • When just Comparison between the Jordaan & Brixton, on one side we have the Jordaan, the OG style of the two – and the most traditional loafer style.  On the other end, there’s the Brixton – a loafer style made from softer leather with a collapsible heel to convert into a mule. Style-wise, if you are not so hot on the collapsible heel., you can get Gucci Jordaan loafers.
