The Oral B Genius X is an impressively high-tech toothbrush that can improve your technique, but sonic toothbrush lovers may not enjoy the higher volume.

The Oral-B app adds some excellent tools to help improve your brushing technique and ensure you don't miss a spot (it tracks the brush's position in your mouth in real time with surprising accuracy), but the Genius X also delivers a thorough clean if you prefer not to connect it to your phone. It's perhaps not the best brush if you have particularly sensitive gums, as the cleaning action is pretty vigorous and it takes a quite a lot of pressure to activate the warning sensor, but it's an otherwise great all-rounder. Its cleverly designed charging case is a highlight too, and gives regular travellers extra options for keeping their brush powered up.

The Oral B Genius X also includes a host of useful features, such as a pressure sensor, a two-minute timer, and a 3-second pulse reminder to switch position, plus a range of stylish colors to choose from, including rose gold and sleek black. It also offers users the ability to customize their toothbrushes further, with a fun color-changing ring at the top of the handset.

The Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige is an absolutely top-end electric toothbrush, and it shows. It's smart and sleek, and even comes with an executive-looking leather-effect travel case that keeps it charged when you're away from home. It's slim and light in the hand, designed to stay as clean as possible, and its compact all-purpose brush head avoids the need to switch between different designs for sensitive and intense brushing.

The downside of that minimalist design is the lack of controls on the handle, which means you'll have to delve into the Sonicare app to make adjustments to the settings. That's not a problem if you know exactly what type of brushing experience you like, and are happy to invest a little time getting it just so, but if you're in a hurry you can't pick a mode on the fly as you can with the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000.

And here are 3 variants of the Sonicare 9900 Prestige.The difference is the color of the brush handle and travel case.From a feature, performance and technical point of view they are all the same.

• Whilst both Oral-B iO Series 9 and Genius X clean the teeth very well, the iO Series 9  is a much sleeker toothbrush.It is also quieter and the brushing action softer and smoother.  The display is innovative and makes the iO fairly unique.
