Sonicare DiamondClean Smart vs. Prestige vs. ProtectiveClean: Which is Best for You?
- We all kown that Philips makes some of the best electric toothbrushes around and for years, Philips Sonicare has led the way in electric toothbrush technology. And now, Philips Sonicare is the number one recommended electric toothbrush brand by dentists. The challenge though is that they have very popular models, each with its own unique features that will help you keep your teeth healthy. So which Philips Sonicare toothbrush should you buy?Which model of Sonicare toothbrush is best? What is the difference between Sonicare DiamondClean models? What is the difference between Sonicare DiamondClean and ProtectiveClean? Here we've rounded up the key difference between the various Sonicare electric toothbrushes so you can make an informed choice and decide which is right for you.
Key Considerations to buy Sonicare Toothbrushs
Timer(s): This one of the main reasons people purchase an electric toothbrush. Dentists recommend brushing for a full two minutes to completely clean teeth. Most Sonicare toothbrushes come with a built-in Smartimer that runs the vibrations for two minutes.
Speed/intensity settings: Several models have up to three speed or intensity settings.
Pressure sensor: Excess pressure on the gums can cause gum recession, which can lead to periodontal disease. Some Sonicare toothbrushes have a pressure sensor that alerts the user or stops the vibrations if too much pressure is applied.
Brush heads: Some toothbrushes come with two identical brush heads, while others include different types.
Battery life: Battery life determines not only the power of the toothbrush but how long it can hold a charge before you need to replace the batteries or recharge.
Charger style: Chargers come in three different styles: stand, cup, and wireless.
Bluetooth technology with brushing app: Bluetooth technology helps take your oral health care to the next level.
Brush modes: Toothbrushes with different brush modes can adjust the intensity and head movement for customized brushing effects. Though no Sonicare toothbrush contains all of these modes (the most on any one toothbrush is five), the modes available include Clean, White, Deep Clean, Gum Health, Tongue Care, Sensitive, Massage, Refresh, White+.
Movements per minute: You can get a good cleaning no matter the brush head’s movements per minute, but to give you an idea of the power available, we’ve included Sonicare’s three levels:
15,000/minute: Battery-powered toothbrushes use 15,000 brush movements per minute, making them the weakest of the toothbrushes.
31,000/minute: Several Sonicare models use 31,000 movements per minute.
62,000/minute: Most Sonicare toothbrushes can reach a top speed of 62,000 movements per minute.

Sonicare DiamondClean Smart vs. Prestige vs. ProtectiveClean Overview
Sonicare DiamondClean Smart Series
User reviews:4.7/5.0
Philips released the DiamondClean Smart, a new iteration of its top-of-the-line toothbrush with all the bells and whistles. Not only does it connect to your iPhone using a Bluetooth connection to help you brush better than ever before, but it's also been redesigned to decouple brushing mode from intensity. There are new smart brushes for more tailored brushing, additional modes to meet different needs, and other small refinements that bring overall improvements.
This new DiamondClean toothbrush is going to make your teeth whiter, healthier, and squeaky clean, it's not cheap, and the app is sometimes more gimmicky than helpful. All in all, though, you're not going to find a better brushing experience.
Design
The DiamondClean Smart adopts design elements from the original DiamondClean, but it also introduces both new and refined features. The brush is sleek with clean lines and the traditional look of the DiamondClean, but instead of a single button to turn it off and on, there are now two buttons.
The top button continues to function as an on/off button, but there's now a second button that controls the intensity. Below the two buttons, there are a series of LEDs denoting the different brushing modes, and at the bottom, there's a light-up base that fits into the charger.
App
You can use the DiamondClean Smart entirely without the app, but this is a "smart" brush, so it is designed to be used with the Philips Sonicare app. The toothbrush connects to your iPhone using Bluetooth, and with the app, you can see your progress brushing your teeth in real time.

Should you buy the Sonicare DiamondClean Smart Series?
Buy it if
You value practicality
With all the important features right on the handle, plenty of brushing options to choose from, and great battery life, the Sonicare DiamondClean really nails the basics.
You're a frequent traveller
The brush comes with a superb rechargeable travel case that's thoughtfully designed to keep it safe and secure, and has a built-in cable so there's no need to carry a separate charger.
You value style
The charging base is big, but like every other part of this brush, it's well designed and looks very smart.
Don't buy it if
You want to improve your technique
The app will let you know if you're not spending enough time brushing, but if you're more worried that you keep missing a spot, you'll be better off with a brush that can track its location in your mouth as you go.
You want to keep kids motivated
Some smart toothbrushes present the user with awards and achievements that might be patronising to adults, but will keep kids engaged. The Sonicare app is a more sensible, practical tool that doesn't drown you with praise.
Sonicare Prestige Series
User reviews:4.6/5.0
The Sonicare Prestige has just 1 model - the Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige, is an absolutely top-end electric toothbrush, and it shows. It's smart and sleek, and even comes with an executive-looking leather-effect travel case that keeps it charged when you're away from home. It's slim and light in the hand, designed to stay as clean as possible, and its compact all-purpose brush head avoids the need to switch between different designs for sensitive and intense brushing.
The downside of that minimalist design is the lack of controls on the handle, which means you'll have to delve into the Sonicare app to make adjustments to the settings.
Design
The Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige is a very sleek, minimalist electric toothbrush, and is available in two colors: champagne and midnight. Unlike many higher-end electric brushes, it has no display and only a single power button. Power level is indicated by three small LEDs below the button, and another LED at the bottom of the handle indicates that it’s powered on.
App
To provide a connected experience you need to download the Philips Sonicare app. Using a Bluetooth connection between your phone and the brush, it allows you to customize your toothbrush settings, to track your brushing progress, as well as receive tips and recommendations. More on the app and the data it tracks also coming up.…
When you use the brush, it will store recent brushing data, within the last 2-3 days it seems, and add it into the app when you connect the brush via Bluetooth.

Midnight Blue – HX990/12
Pink – HX9990/13
The travel case is color matched to the brush handle.

Brushing Modes
The Sonicare 9900 Prestige electric toothbrush can clean your teeth in a choice of 5 different modes.
The 5 brushing mode options you have are:
Clean:2 minutes
White+:2 minutes and 40 seconds
Gum Health:3 minutes and 20 seconds
Deep Clean:3 minutes
Sensitive:2 minutes
This results in 6 sections of the mouth to brush.
1 - Upper right back teeth
2 - Upper front teeth
3 - Upper left back teeth
4 - Lower left back teeth
5 - Lower front teeth
6 - Lower right back teeth
The 6 sections of 20 seconds intervals still result in the same brushing time. It is just a slightly different approach.

Should you buy the Sonicare 9900 Prestige?
Buy it if
You're a frequent traveller
The USB-C chargeable case means you can take the Sonicare 9900 Prestige on the road for weeks, and it's designed to stay as clean as possible on your journeys.
You want to perfect your brushing
The real-time feedback will help you develop better technique that'll serve you well long-term, even on days when you don't want to open the app.
Style matters
Let's be honest, style one of this brush's key selling points. Its sleek design is timeless, and will look the part in any bathroom.
Don't buy it if
You want to encourage kids to brush
The Oral-B app is advanced and very well designed, but it's practical rather than entertaining won't offer awards and achievements for a job well done.
You want to change modes on the fly
If you want to quickly pick a different mode each morning, the lack of controls on the brush handle means you'll need to open the app to make those adjustments.
Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean Series
User reviews:4.7/5.0
The Philips Sonicare Protectiveclean models are the new mid-range Philips Sonicare electric toothbrushes models. They were commissioned in March 2018 to cater for the increased demand for gum care products hence the name ProtectiveClean.
The new Philips Sonicare Protectiveclean 4100, 5100 and 6100 are improved versions of the current mid-range price models by Sonicare. For instance the 4100 is an improved version of the Sonicare 2 series, the Protectiveclean 5100 is a revamped version of the Sonicare 3 Series gum control while the ProtectiveClean 6100 is a modified version of Sonicare HealthyWhite. The protective clean range has new features designed to match similar mid-range models by its main competitor Oral B.
Design
The ProtectiveClean 6100 feels similar to Sonicares most premium model available at the time of writing, the DiamondClean Smart. It boasts, some but not all of the features of the Smart, but is, as a result, a cheaper alternative.
It is clear when you handle the 2 side by side that the DiamondClean is the more premium, but technology once reserved for the most premium of models, BrushSync, has been placed in the ProtectiveClean.
Key Features
Sonic cleaning action – 62,000 movements per minute
3 cleaning modes (Clean, White and Gum Care)
3 brushing intensities
Built-in pressure sensor

Should you buy the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean ?
Buy it if
If you’re looking for a decent electric toothbrush
Sonicare ProtectiveClean is effective at achieving dental hygiene, offers a range of useful features, and is priced at a moderate rate, then the Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100 may be your best electric toothbrush.
If you like solid cleaning performance.
The Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 5100 puts in a solid cleaning performance. We also love the BrushSync Notification that lets us know when it’s time to change the brush head, as it removes the guesswork.
If you’re happy to run the brush at full power
The Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean is a top brush that quickly removes plaque build-up and staining to a degree.
Don't buy it if
If price is an important concern, then paying more for features you don’t need can force a decision in favor of another model.
The device is laden with features, but some users may not require such versatility and functions.
Bottom Line
Sonicare DiamondClean Smart
While Philips DiamondClean range of smart toothbrushes are all good, there are some advantages the smart 9700 has over the smart 9500 and smart 9300, and from the comparison, these minor advantages do not, however, disrupt the functionality of the toothbrushes, and can serve as a pointer for you, if you intend to change/upgrade your smart toothbrush.
Sonicare Prestige
The Philips Sonicare Prestige 9900 is a particularly stylish and pleasant toothbrush with many options. The adaptive intensity (SenseIQ) provides a better brushing experience. The only improvement I would like is an app that would be a bit more consistent in connection, for easier data syncing. If you are looking for a particularly good toothbrush, this Prestige 9900 is definitely recommended!
Sonicare ProtectiveClean
The Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100 is the brush to go for.It offers a brilliant all-round package. Most importantly, it cleans the teeth really well.It looks and feels good in the hand, is simple to use and has an excellent battery life.It is not bogged down with unnecessary features, but comes with essential elements like a timer and pacer.
Frequent travelers will gain value from the 5100 that comes with the travel case and extra cleaning modes.
Whilst the range topping 6100 has unique elements to it, their importance is harder to justify. It is still a solid brush and relatively good value, I do believe most will prefer to opt for other models that offer more or less in the box.
Sonicare DiamondClean Smart vs. Prestige vs. ProtectiveClean: Which Should You Buy?
The range of brushes on offer from Sonicare, as well as the slight variations between models, can make it a daunting task to choose the right brush. For this reason, we try to keep our recommendations straightforward and recommend brushes based on overall value for money.
Ultimately, all of the brushes will provide a very good clean to the teeth and gums if used correctly.
If you really do desire the absolute best, irrespective of price, then it has to be the 9900 Prestige.
For everyone else, pick the better value option. That is likely to be the DiamondClean Smart.
