Oral-B Electric Toothbrush Review

Braun Oral-B electric toothbrushes use small round brush heads with rotating-oscillating technology, and some models also offer pulsing heads for deeper cleaning. Different types of brush head are designed for whitening, sensitive gums, and use with braces. There is even a compatible brush head made with charcoal fiber.

Oral-B offers a wide range of brushes, with basic models being more affordable and more advanced models retailing at a couple hundred dollars. Many models come with Bluetooth connectivity (featured in the table above).

What is the best Oral-B toothbrush to get?

You've probably already realized that Braun Oral-B manufactures quite a few different types of electric toothbrushes. Most of their brushes have a number after their name, and a higher number is generally an indication of more features. We'll explain more about these later on.

Another thing to look for in your Oral-B electric toothbrush is the descriptor that comes with it. You will find brushes with the following branding:

  • iO is the most technologically advanced Oral-B toothbrush, launched in July 2020. Its frictionless magnetic drive revolutionizes the way their brushes work and delivers more power to the bristles, making it more effective on plaque and gum disease.

  • Genius uses artificial intelligence (AI), along with other technological features, to help you brush your teeth properly and improve your technique.

  • Smart Oral-B toothbrushes have a pressure sensor that tells you if you brush too hard, different brushing modes, Bluetooth connectivity, and a timer.

  • Pro brushes include a timer so you know you’ve brushed your teeth for two minutes each time.

Oral-B iO vs. Genius vs. Smart vs. Pro Overview

>>Oral-B iO Series

User reviews:4.8/5.0

Introduced in 2020, the iO Series has been totally redesigned and is a considerable refinement on what Oral-B have been offering.

The new model Braun model comes in 3 versions the Oral B io 7 vs 8 vs 9. In May 2021 Oral B io6 was introduced to the io range. This means that it will take at least 12 hours to recharge, unlike io7,8,9 that will take only 3 hours to fully recharge, thanks to the magnetic charging technique.

Within that range are the Series 7, Series 8 and Series 9 electric toothbrushes. The fundamental design, performance and features are almost the same amongst all 3 series.  The differences are pretty subtle. The cleaning modes available, handle colors, the box contents and the price tag are the main differentiators. That said, the 6, 7 and 8 series do not have the 3D tracking available.

The Series 6 has a standard, non-magnetic charging stand. In general, the Oral B IO Series is markedly completely different from many other Oral B toothbrush versions that have primarily relied on the patented 3D technology of vibrations, pulsations, and oscillations.

iO Series Design and Features

  • Top of the line handle with the most advanced toothbrush technology.

  • 3D cleaning action – oscillates, rotates and micro-vibrates.

  • Up to 7 personalized cleaning modes.

  • Cleaning mode labels/icons shown on the display.

  • Built-in 2 minute timer and 30 second pacer.

  • Visible pressure sensor highlights correct and incorrect pressure.

  • Smart toothbrushes with Bluetooth connectivity.

  • Position detection technology to track the toothbrush in the mouth.

  • 3D teeth tracking with AI for enhanced feedback on your brushing.

  • Interactive display built-into the handle.

  • A battery life of 2+ weeks.

  • Battery life status is shown on the display.

  • Magnetic charger for more convenient and quicker charging.

  • The most expensive of toothbrushes.

App

With the iOS or Android app, you can connect your iO via Bluetooth for more advanced feedback and control, including a guided brushing mode that shows you where you’ve cleaned, and for how long, with a simple graphic representation of your teeth.

Reviews:

Charging and battery life

Top grades to Oral-B for addressing two of the most annoying things about many of their other brushes.

Although the advertised battery life is two weeks — the same as their previous brushes — we found it lasted much longer. Many other Oral-B iO reviews seem to concur. If you're using it for the recommended four minutes a day, you might find it lasts for a month or more between charges.

To add to this, charging takes just three hours with the magnetic charging stand. Again, this is a huge improvement on having to charge your toothbrush for the better part of a day. Plus, you can check via the display exactly how much battery life is left.

Is the Oral-B iO toothbrush worth it?

The Oral-B iO is an excellent toothbrush and if you use it as directed, along with the app to track your brushing habits, it's going to help improve your oral health. The same could be said of many cheaper brushes as well.

There is no one thing about the iO that really justifies the price tag, but when you add it all up: the micro-vibration technology, the smoother clean, the quiet motor, decent battery, LED display… you end up with a toothbrush that's fun to use and leaves your teeth feeling great.

You can probably get the same clean with cheaper Oral-B iO toothbrushes, including the Pro 1000 which costs under $50. It just depends on if you want to splurge for high technology.

The Oral-B Genius X with Artificial Intelligence, an update on the very popular Genius 9600, is Oral-B's next most advanced brush.

It has everything you would want and a few things you probably never thought you’d need from a toothbrush. If you like the idea of an intelligent toothbrush but the iO is a little out of your budget, the Genius X is your next best option.

Existing Genius owners need not upgrade, for the most part, they are the same toothbrush. However, the Genius X is available in new color options, has a different box contents and perhaps most significantly has Artificial Intelligence (AI).

AI technology is allowing Oral-B to rework and improve the offering that was the Genius 8000.

With the Genius X, there is no smartphone holder and no need to stand in front of a camera. Sensors and clever computer wizardry track your brush movements, reporting back to you, just how well you brushed and letting you know where you could do better.

Genius Series Design and Features

  • Premium handles with more features and better box contents.

  • 3D cleaning action – oscillates, rotates and pulsates.

  • Up to 6 personalized cleaning modes.

  • Cleaning mode labels/icons on the handle (with exception of Daily Clean mode).

  • Built-in 2 minute timer and 30 second pacer.

  • Visible pressure sensor.

  • Smart toothbrushes with Bluetooth connectivity.

  • Position detection technology to track the toothbrush in the mouth.

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) for enhanced feedback on your brushing.

  • A battery life of around 2 weeks.

  • Battery status LED on the handle.

  • Premium prices.

 App

The smart bit is the compatible Oral-B app (iOS and Android), which works when you pair your phone with your brush over Bluetooth.

The Oral-B app gives you real-time feedback while you clean for improved brushing habits, and you can share your oral care activity with your dentist to track your progress.

But as a premium electric toothbrush both the Genius 8000 and 9000 certainly live up to the hype. Neither is cheap but you can find significant discounts online, and, compared to the cost of a visit to the dentist, using a quality toothbrush is a wise financial as well as healthy decision.

Charging and battery life

You can go over two weeks of use now, whereas in the past the handle would have struggled to keep humming after 10 days.

Each model comes with two chargers. There is a standard little plinth for the brush to sit on, and then there’s the USB travel case which can charge both the brush and your smartphone at the same time. That’s quite a useful feature and I found it very handy.

The Genius 8000 this slightly different from the others in that its voltage is US-only. The Genius 9000 and the two X models also have 200-240 volts so they can all be used overseas. If you’re a regular traveler then this is worth bearing in mind.

Is the Oral B Genius worth it?

With all of these brushes being so similar, it would be tempting to just recommend going for the cheapest one, the Genius 8000. It’s fully $50 cheaper than the limited-edition flagship Genius X Luxe, but you aren’t going to get your teeth feeling and looking $50 cleaner.

However, it isn’t quite that simple because if you’re buying toothbrushes at these prices then there’s a good chance you are in the market for and electric toothbrush with a Bluetooth app that is going to coach you and give you feedback. And the ‘AI’ enhanced version is definitely better than the tracking that you get in the 8000 and 9600.

The Genius X 10000 solves the problem of sensor detection much more simply and could well be worth $20 more than the price of the 8000.

>>Oral-B  Smart Series

User reviews:4.7/5.0

1656146738170373.png

Source:oralb.com

Overall, the Oral-B SmartSeries is a well designed product that fully utilizes the two-way communication between toothbrush and smartphone to improve your brushing habits. I especially like the Focused Care feature for setting up custom brushing guidelines, and the Achievements. However, I wish the brush could track its own movement in your mouth, as the upcoming $100 Kolibree can.

At $160 for the starting model, the Oral-B brush is also considerably more expensive than a nonconnected toothbrush with similar features (around $115). Overall, the Oral-B SmartSeries is worth a look for people who are serious about their dental health and the quantified self, but we are waiting for something even smarter.

Unlike other smart toothbrushes, such as Kolibree and Grush, Oral-B's SmartSeries does not carry onboard motion sensors or gyroscopes to detect exactly where in your mouth you are brushing. In fact, it's easy to game the Oral-B system by just tapping the Start button on the timer and letting it run. Kolibree requires you to twist and turn the brush to fill up the quadrants on its app.

After you stop brushing, the app asks if you've cleaned your tongue, flossed and rinsed in three separate pages. To complete the session, you'll have to tap Completed or Skipped on each screen. This was easier said than done.

Smart Series Design and Features

  • Premium handles with more features and accessories

  • 3D cleaning action – oscillates, rotates and pulsates.

  • Up to 5 cleaning modes.

  • No cleaning mode labels/icons on the handle.

  • Built-in 2 minute timer and 30 second pacer.

  • Visible pressure sensor.

  • Smart toothbrushes with Bluetooth connectivity. (Oral-B Smart 1500 being an exception)

  • A battery life of around 2 weeks.

  • Battery status LED on the handle.

  • Higher mid-range prices.

App

After you download and start the Oral-B app (free on iOS and Android), the app walks you through the directions for how to set up the app and connect the brush. You'll just have to make sure your phone's Bluetooth is turned on.

Once that's all done, you're taken to a timer that counts up to 2 minutes by default; that's the amount of time dentists recommend you brush during each session. The timer starts when you hit the power button on the toothbrush, and as you brush, the ring around the timer starts to fill up, indicating your progress. It stops when you press the power button again, turning the brush off.

  • Timer auto starts when you start brushing

  • Focused care tool for customized care

Charging and battery life

The Oral-B Smart Series offer 2+ weeks of battery life, or at least that is the claim Oral-B makes. In our hands-on testing, it actually performed fairly well. On a full charge, the Smart 3000 achieved 17 days of usage. This is based on 2 cleans per day, each lasting 2 minutes.

Is the Oral B Smart worth it?

Every Oral B Smart toothbrushe is excellent, they  have the key features I would recommend that anyone look for in an electric toothbrush.

The small round oscillating brush head ensures the teeth are cleaned well and there is no reason you could not achieve a good standard of oral care with either of these brushes, when used as part of your daily routine.

The differences here are incredibly subtle, but I do pick the Smart 1500 as it is the newer model and benefits from the 360 degree pressure sensor and additional cleaning mode without the need to spend any more to acquire such.

Considering the switch from a manual toothbrush to electric? The Oral-B Pro 1000 is an excellent electric toothbrush for first-timers. In this review, we’ll explain the Oral-B Pro 1000’s features, what makes it different from other electric toothbrushes, and why it’s particularly good for first-time electric toothbrush users.

At only $50, the Oral-B Pro 1000 is much cheaper than most of Oral-B’s other electric toothbrush models, as well as many other electric toothbrush brands. This price makes the Oral-B Pro 1000 attractive, especially for first-time users, because you can get the superior clean of an electric toothbrush without paying hundreds. However, the price also means this toothbrush has fewer features than more expensive models may have.

The Pro 500 is a functional electric toothbrush that is a good choice if you are on a budget. It cleans the teeth well and the built-in 2 minute timer is a great feature as it helps you brush for the dentist recommended 2 minutes. The 8 day battery life is satisfactory, if not as good as the competition.

  • The ideal brushes for the vast majority.

  • 3D cleaning action – oscillates, rotates and pulsates. (Excludes Pro 500)

Is the Oral B Pro worth it?

For only $50, the Oral-B Pro 1000 is perfect for people who want the superior clean of an electric toothbrush, without paying extra for bells and whistles. It is certainly basic, coming with only one brush mode, but it's a great option for those switching to electric for the first time.

You also get three additional brush heads and a neat travel case. For the best toothbrush travel case checkout the Oral-B Genius 9000, which indeed is a newer, better toothbrush than the SmartSeries.

How to Choose Oral-B Electric Toothbrush Heads?

Just like there are different choices of shapes and bristle hardness with normal toothbrushes, you have lots of choices for your Oral-B electric toothbrush heads. You can choose from:

  • CrossAction brush heads have bristles angled at 16° to give a more effective clean and are available in black or white

  • Precision Clean brush heads have been designed to give a thorough clean right down to the gumline

  • FlossAction means the head will get deeper in between your teeth with the micro pulse bristles

  • Trizone brush heads are shaped more like a manual toothbrush and have three different cleaning zones

  • 3D White includes a polishing cup in the middle to get rid of stains and make your teeth whiter

  • Sensi Ultrathin heads have soft, rounded bristles so they’re ideal for sensitive teeth and can be used by kids age 6 and up

When it comes to iO refills, you have two types to choose between, Ultimate Clean and Gentle Care.

Just like with a conventional toothbrush, you should replace the head on your Oral-B brush at least every three months, but if the bristles are frayed you should change it sooner.

Oral-B iO vs. Genius vs. Smart vs. Pro: Which One is Best?

The great number of choices you have within the Oral-B range can make it really quite difficult to decide which toothbrush is right for you.

Ultimately, all of the brushes will provide a very good clean to the teeth and gums if used correctly.

Perfecting your brushing routine, including the brushing time, technique and frequency will bring more positive benefit than any particular toothbrush.

Premium models may bring benefits for some. However, for the vast majority, the prices are prohibitive and the benefits for every dollar ($) spent certainly reduces.

For the majority of people, myself included the Oral-B Smart 1500 is the toothbrush to go for. It offers a balance of cleaning performance and features at a price most will find affordable.

If you really do desire the absolute best, irrespective of price, then it has to be the iO Series 9.

FAQ

1.Which is Better Oral B genius or iO?

Whilst both brushes clean the teeth very well, the iO is a much sleeker toothbrush. It is also quieter and the brushing action softer and smoother. The display is innovative and makes the iO fairly unique.

2.Is the Oral-B iO an oscillating brush?

Yes, the circular brush head moves side to side and is supported by micro vibrations for extra deep cleaning.

3.What brush head does the iO come with and what alternative ones can be used?

4 x iO ultimate clean brush heads are supplied with the Series 9 toothbrush.

You can purchase gentle care brush heads for the iO too.

4.How long does the battery last?

If you go with the iO, you'll get a full charge in around 3 hours with the magnetic charging stand. Otherwise, you’ll need to leave it plugged in for up to 22 hours to get it fully charged.

A full power-up can take anywhere between 14 and 22 hours. Because of the charging method, you need to make sure you don't put the brush on a metal surface whilst it’s charging.

5.What’s the key difference between the Oral-B iO and GENIUS?

The Oral-B iO electric toothbrushes feature an interactive display, while the GENIUS lineup makes use of more traditional LED icons on the handle.

6.How long is the warranty of Oral-B electric toothbrushes?

Oral-B’s electric toothbrushes typically come with a 2-year warranty.

7.How to get an Oral-B electric toothbrush charger?

Whenever you buy an Oral-B electric toothbrush, you’ll get a charger in the box. You can buy a replacement charger if yours is lost or damaged. Be sure to check compatibility with your toothbrush.

You can also buy a USB charger that will fit most Oral-B brushes. It means that you can charge your toothbrush with a power bank when you’re on the go rather than having to hunt down a plug socket that you can leave your toothbrush plugged into.

8.What battery do Oral-B rechargeable toothbrushes use?

Most Oral-B electric toothbrushes come with a lithium-ion battery, which means you should get up to two weeks’ worth of brushing on one charge. It lasts a long time without needing to be replaced. It also has a lower environmental impact than old-style nickel cadmium batteries.
