Original Cheerios vs. Honey Nut vs. Multi-Grain vs. Hearty Nut Medley: Differences and Reviews 2024

Original Cheerios vs. Honey Nut vs. Multi-Grain vs. Hearty Nut Medley: Differences and Reviews 2024

    • Since they were introduced in 1941, Cheerios have been a staple in households across the United States. They remain one of the most popular breakfast cereals on the market and are now available worldwide. What makes Cheerios such a near-perfect cereal is that it serves as a neutral base; a canvas for you to build on. Looking to amp up the protein? Throw some chia seeds in the bowl. Looking for a salty component? Peanut butter is a natural pairing. Looking for more protein and flavor? Yogurt that sh*t right up! A bowl of Cheerios serves as a great foundation for more adventurous flavors and you don’t have to worry about turning the result into a clash of awful flavors. Although they’re marketed as nutritious, you may wonder whether Cheerios are a healthy choice — and how the different varieties compare. Here, we've picked four popular favors from Cheerios including Original, Honey Nut, Multi-Grain, Hearty Nut Medley, which one makes the best? We want to look at these cereals from top to bottom, including their ingredients, how they taste, costs, quality, and more!

  • About Cheerios

Manufactured by General Mills, Cheerios is one of the bestselling brands of breakfast cereal. The puffed oats have been around for more than 83 years, and millions of people start their day with a bowl of the cereal.

In 1941, Lester Borchardt was a physicist working for General Mills in Minnesota. He and his team invented Cheerios by developing a puffing gun machine that puffed oats into a small "o" shape.

For the first 30 or so years, eating a bowl of Cheerios meant eating the original, classic recipe. But in 1976, Cinnamon Nut Cheerios came on the market, followed by Honey Nut Cheerios three years later. Honey Nut Cheerios were instantly popular, and the bumblebee (named BuzzBee) that appeared on each box became a recognizable mascot for Cheerios. Honey Nut Cheerios has become such a favorite, in fact, that not only does it outsell the original Cheerios flavor, it has been the No. 1 cereal in America every year since 2009.

Review: Before there were a wide variety of Cheerios flavors to choose from, there was just one option: the original Cheerios, even though that might be the plainest and most basic flavor of them all. First of all, you can't hate on a classic. The first time you ever had Cheerios, this is probably the kind you had, so there's a familiarity there that gives this cereal an appeal. It also has a plain flavor that you can't dislike. While you may not be the biggest fan of it, most people aren't going to find this cereal completely unappealing.

It may not be your top Cheerios flavor, but there's nothing wrong with starting your day with the original. Each serving of Cheerios only has two grams of sugar, which means most of what you taste here is the natural flavor of oat which… sort of tastes like wet cardboard. While there's no pretending that Cheerios have a naturally delicious flavor, this is still a cereal worth keeping stocked in your pantry, especially if you like to add fruit to your cereal but don't want to go overboard on the added sugars.

Pros:

More healthier than others

Low in fat

Low sugar

High in fiber, iron, and vitamins

Gluten-free

Cons:

High in carbs

Tastes like wet cardboard

Review: Honestly, these are probably more well-known and popular than the original Cheerios, and there's good reason for that: They taste incredible. Seriously, even if you don't like cereal, you probably won't be able to stop yourself from eating just one bowl of this stuff — it's that good. The honey flavoring adds a lovely touch of sweetness that will keep you going back for more, but it's much lighter than most other sweet cereals out there.

The sweetness levels are perfectly balanced, and no matter what your tastes are, you're likely to find an enjoyable breakfast option or mid-day snack in every box of Honey Nut Cheerios. Beware of the high sugar content, however, since the 12 grams of sugar included in every serving actually places the highest of any other variety in the article — that's 24% of your daily recommended value of sugar in just one meal. The protein and fiber content isn't bad by comparison, but the ratio certainly isn't keeping up; there are only three grams of fiber and three grams of protein per serving.

Pros:

Timeless classic

Rich honey flavor

Naturally flavored and gluten-free

High in fiber, iron, and vitamins

No artificial flavors & colors

Cons:

Very high sugar content

Review: This gluten free cereal is made with whole grain oats, whole grain corn, whole grain rice and whole grain sorghum. These grains are grown, milled and toasted before being lightly sweetened, resulting in a delicious heart healthy cereal for adults and children with more of the goodness you are looking for in every spoonful. Serve this multigrain toasted oat cereal for breakfast, make it into cereal bars, prepare delicious snacks for toddlers or add it to your favorite trail mix. Made with whole grain oats, this gluten free cereal contains 3 grams of dietary fiber per serving and provides 100% of the daily value of nine vitamins and minerals.

The cereal itself may taste different than you imagine. You might think it has all the flavors of different grains. Instead, it tastes like regular cereal with a hint of sweetness, so it's tasty and not overwhelming. Very enjoyable to be a healthy cereal. Totally recommend it for those who are health conscious.

Pros:

Made with five whole grains and just the right amount of sweetness

Lightly sweetened without overwhelming

High in fiber, iron, and vitamins

Suitable for those who are health conscious
