Ninja Foodi vs. Instant Pot Duo Crisp vs. Gourmia Air Fryer: Full Comparison & Verdict 2024

Ninja Foodi vs. Instant Pot Duo Crisp vs. Gourmia Air Fryer: Full Comparison & Verdict 2024

The air fryer is a time-saving, energy-saving, and even life-changing kitchen appliance. There is an air fryer in almost every smart kitchen around the world because without it, the kitchen is not a smart kitchen. For more non-professionals, we need a multi-functional kitchen appliance, which can replace many single-function appliances and save us cabinet space and purchase cost. Among the many brands and models on the market, the most popular ones are Ninja, Instant Pot and Gourmia. So which one is best for me? Let’s compare the best air fryers and pressure cookers!

What are the best pressure cookers and air fryers?

Here are our top picks:

  • Instant Pot Duo Crisp with Ultimate Lid

  • Ninja Foodi 14-in-1 SMART XL with SmartLid

  • Gourmia GPA2060 One-Lid Pressure Cooker + Air Fryer

The origin of the combination of pressure cooker and air fryer

1. Instant Pot Duo Crisp

Instant Pot® Duo™ Crisp™ 6.5-quart with Ultimate Lid Multi-Cooker and Air Fryer

$199.95

Since the first Instant Pot was launched in 2010, the countertop appliance has attracted a cult following.

The Instant Pot pressure cooker gained popularity thanks to its versatility. The different cooking modes let you whip up a wide variety of delicious meals.

Instant released their first air fryer in 2019, and it had a powerful name: Instant Vortex Plus.

  • Instant™ Vortex™ Plus Air Fryer Oven: The 10-quart, 7-in-1 Air Fryer Oven creates healthier versions of your favorite crispy dishes. With 14 preset Smart Programs, the Vortex™ Plus Air Fryer Oven can easily air fry, roast, bake, broil, dehydrate, reheat or rotisserie food to crispy perfection with little or no oil.

Then in 2019, this unexpected brand launched its first air fryer/pressure cooker combo called Instant Pot Duo Crisp.

Where it differs from other Instant Pots is it also has an air fryer lid.

The new lid is designed with Instant Pot's innovative Instant Crisp Technology that ensures a crispy crunch and golden finish.

Now that the Instant Pot Duo Crisp is fading, we recommend buying its upgraded version, the Instant Pot Pro Crisp.

And what is the most advanced model? It is the Instant Pot Duo Crisp with Ultimate Lid released in 2022.

Any improvements?

Duo Crisp 2-in-1 Instant Pot has two different lids for two different functions.

Use the pressure cooker lid for pressure cook, sauté, steam, slow cook and sous vide settings.

Change to the air fryer lid to use the air fry, roast, bake, broil, and dehydrate settings.

But the ‘Ultimate Lid’ part means you can use the various functions without swapping between lids as you do with the regular Duo Crisp. This is much more convenient and it means you don’t need to find additional storage space for different lids.

2. Ninja Foodi

Ninja OL701 Foodi 14-in-1 SMART XL 8 Qt. Pressure Cooker Steam Fryer with SmartLid & Thermometer

Prior to the release of the Instant Pot Duo Crisp in 2019, the Ninja Foodi had already been on the market in 2018.

For the first time ever, Ninja brings together the best of pressure cooking and air frying in one convenient appliance. This groundbreaking new technology introduces TenderCrisp™ cooking.

The Ninja Foodi has two lids: a detachable pressure cooking lid for tenderness and a non-removable crisping lid.

This Pressure Cooker That Makes Crisp™ went viral on social platforms so quickly that it sold out in just four days, even though it’s back in stock!

The Ninja® Foodi™ is currently available at retailers nationwide, at an MSRP of $179.99 for the base product.

Ninja, the leader in home innovation, has never stopped. It launched Ninja Foodi 14-in-1 SMART XL with SmartLid in 2021.

That’s right, Ninja is always ahead of the trends of the times!

SmartLid Slider™ unlocks pressure cooking, air frying, and SteamCrisping, all under one SmartLid™.

Gourmia GPA2060 One-Lid Pressure Cooker + Air Fryer with 15-One-Touch Cooking Functions

$125

I don’t know if it followed the popular trend of Ninja Foodi, but Gourmia also released a pressure cooker and air fryer in 2019.

I don’t know if it followed the popular trend of Ninja Foodi, but Gourmia also released a pressure cooker and air fryer in 2019.

However, Gourmia's one-lid feature is an industry first, so that busy chefs never need to change tops to fit the cooking mode.

We all know Gourmia is a designer and manufacturer of innovative countertop kitchen appliances, and this line from it combines both Air Fryer and Pressure Cooker technologies to cook either way using the same lid.

The modes in each combo unit can be used individually or together to create quick and delicious meals.

The original models were GPA1980 and GPA1990, which have now been updated to the new model GPA2060.

Editor's review: What's the difference between the best pressure cookers and air fryers?

1. Air fryer effect: Ninja Foodi vs. Instant Pot Duo Crisp vs.Gourmia One-Lid

The Ninja air fryer gets top marks for performance. It produces evenly crispy frozen fries and homemade chicken drumsticks that are juicy on the inside.

It also features multiple cooking settings with unique maximum and minimum temperatures, including maximum crisp and air broil (up to 450°F) and dehydrate (down to 105°F).

In the tests, the chicken drumsticks came out crispy, golden, and juicy in just 18 minutes, and the frozen fries were moist but crispy, cooking evenly without any wobbles midway through.

The Ninja Foodi air fryes faster than the Instant Pot Duo Crisp and Gourmia.

The Ninja Foodi only takes 8 minutes to get golden, even fries. With Duo Crisp and Gourmia, the fries must be cooked for an additional 3 minutes to reach proper doneness.

The Duo Crisp air fryer works pretty well, and the chicken wings become crispy, golden, and juicy in just 20 minutes.

But its surface does look less attractive than the Ninja's browning. I guess this is because the brand really focuses more on pressure cooker functionality.

Therefore, when it comes to pressure cooker and slow cooker functions, I would give the Instant Pot the highest score, followed by the Ninja and Gourmia.

With that said, here we are comparing air fryers. This 6.5-quart model has a built-in preheat function. It takes about 4 minutes to reach 400°F and chirps when the temperature is right. It doesn't require you to press "start" again after preheating, which is helpful if you want to add food from scratch and walk away.

Unfortunately, I'm used to air fryers that don't require preheating, so it took some getting used to.

The Gourmia Pressure Cooker + Air Fryer is a great air fryer for those who cook for themselves or for those who are new to air frying and want to give it a try. With a 6-quart capacity, it can quickly cook meals for up to 5 people.

We find that the Gourmia is still a good choice because we use its maximum temperature of 400°F to air fry most foods. I was amazed at the Gourmia Air Fryer's ability to cook food so quickly, evenly, and thoroughly, especially considering the appliance's price point.

We like the exterior design, which looks slim and high-end.

2. Different functions: Ninja Foodi vs. Instant Pot Duo Crisp vs.Gourmia One-Lid

Today, Duo Crisp and Ninja Foodi air fryers come with a "proof" setting, which you can use to create the ideal low-heat environment for dough to rise. The temperature should be around 80°F, which will help the fermentation process get going.

However, "proof" is not included among Gourmia's 15 one-touch cooking functions.

3. Distinctive features: Ninja Foodi vs. Instant Pot Duo Crisp vs.Gourmia One-Lid

Distinctive features: Ninja Foodi vs. Instant Pot Duo Crisp vs.Gourmia One-Lid

The Ninja Foodi is the first pressure cooker to offer a thermometer that senses when your food is cooked to a specified internal temperature.

Ninja has made SEVERAL versions of the Foodi with similar sounding names, so be sure to look for the one that offers the Smart Thermometer. (It’s model number OL701.) You can’t add-on the thermometer afterwards if you buy the wrong model.

In reality, your air fryer has no idea what's going on inside the pot, and the different presets just run cooking times based on averages.

That’s not the case with the new Ninja Foodi Smart XL Air Fryer. It knows what you're cooking and when it's cooked!

The pot thermometer works in all cooking modes, including pressure cooking.

4. Covered area: Ninja Foodi vs. Instant Pot Duo Crisp vs.Gourmia One-Lid

In terms of size, there doesn’t seem to be much difference between these best pressure cookers and fryers.

Take Ninja OL701 Foodi as an example:

The 8-quart Foodi Smart XL Pressure Cooker has 1760 watts of power, weighs approximately 26 pounds, and measures 15.39 inches long x 14.21 inches wide x 14.25 inches high (with lid closed).

When the lid is fully open, it extends 23 inches above the countertop.

Make sure there is enough clearance at the top to allow steam to escape without any cabinets or light fixtures above it.

Gourmia One-Lid Pressure Cooker + Air Fryer

5. Price: Ninja Foodi vs. Instant Pot Duo Crisp vs.Gourmia One-Lid

The Ninja OL701 Foodi is obviously one of the most expensive products in the field, and you'll occasionally find it on sale for around $250, but the Ninja Foodi usually retails for $269.99.

The Instant Pot Duo Crisp sells for $199.99, but you can sometimes find it on sale for $15 less.

The most economical product is Gourmia Pressure Cooker + Air Fryer. Its score in all aspects is actually not too low, but due to its low visibility (insufficient publicity on social platforms), its brand premium may be smaller.

We admit that Gourmia is made in the United States, but compared to products made in China, it lacks some user-friendly operations or fancy functions.

6. Easy to clean: Ninja Foodi vs. Instant Pot Duo Crisp vs.Gourmia One-Lid

All elements of each cookware are dishwasher safe except for the base and lid.

Since both Gourmia and Ninja Foodi have non-stick pots, their inner pots are easier to clean by hand.

However, you can't use metal utensils without damaging it.

Additionally, the Instant Pot has a stainless steel pot that can handle metal utensils. But sometimes cleaning it can be a chore.

Final thoughts: Which versatile and fast kitchen appliance should I choose?

Answer: The best, most advanced appliance is the Ninja Foodi SMART XL Pressure Cooker Steam Fryer with SmartLid!

If you're loyal to the Instant brand and regularly use basic functions like pressure cooking, slow cooking, and sautéing (with the occasional air fryer), then this might be a good choice for you since it's cheap after all.

If you don't mind not having a bread proofing function, you can buy the cheaper Gourmia, but it's not the most popular talking point on the market. Fortunately, its interface is easy to use, and it has detailed explanations and intuitive pictures of various recipes.

But if you're looking for a machine that can make dinner or crisp your food to perfection in one step, this isn't the best choice.

Although the Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker Steam Fryer is more expensive, it covers a wider range of cooking tasks with more consistent results.

During testing, it performed well in almost all features and modes.

Plus, it includes extra accessories like a nonstick Cook & Crisp™ basket and a probe thermometer to make cooking even more convenient.
