Wolf & Shepherd Brand History and Origin

Wolf and Shepherd is a men's dress shoe company. It designs and sells Italian leather dress shoes using technology found in running sneakers. It was founded in 2014 by footwear designer, Justin Schneider in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Prior to starting the company, Schneider was a decathlete competing for the University of Notre Dame. After retiring from competition, Schneider spent five years designing performance shoes and technology for footwear companies such as Adidas, Reebok and New Balance.

The idea for Wolf & Shepherd came when Schneider wanted to update traditionally uncomfortable dress shoes.Schneider began designing prototypes and experimenting with different technologies. He took the $25,000 grand prize at the Mccloskey Business Plan Competition sponsored by the Mendoza College of Business at Notre Dame.

  • Amberjack Review

Amberjack Brand History and Origin

Founder John Peters launched Amberjack in November 2020, in Brooklyn, New York with the goal of building a brand “for the new world we live in.”

With their manufacturing team back in Portugal, the brand develops their own blend of materials to ensure wearability, style, and comfort throughout their shoe collection.  After years working with big companies like Cole Haan, Allen Edmonds, and Adidas, they got frustrated by how bleak the landscape of dress shoes has become. Work is changing, technology is advancing, yet dress shoes are stuck in the past. So, they wanted to create something new.

The brand joins a variety of direct-to-consumer menswear brands helping men dress sharp in the digital age and navigate professional wardrobe choices in the age of remote and hybrid work models.

Amberjack Shoes Prices: The Original: $179;  Chelsea: $195;  Loafer: $175.

Amberjack Shoes Design & Style

Amberjack is a new men’s fashion brand that specializes in shoes “designed for the hybrid future of work.”  Dress shoes are either very traditionally made products that kill your feet, or they are comfort brands that aren't geared towards a younger consumer.  However, Amberjack is using the athletic world, and then coupling that with design that's a little more casual. They spent a long time on the product development side, developing some really cool new technology.

Amberjack The Original decided to accentuate the athletic sole to make it look like a designer created a mash-up of a running shoe and a dress shoe. The craftsmanship and quality are second to none. The Grade A leather is beautiful and soft, and the design strikes the perfect balance between sharp and understated. In specific business casual environments, this is fine.

Amberjack Quality - Material & Durability

Through material innovation and a unique supply chain, Amberjack creates the world's most comfortable dress-casual footwear using modern design, premium materials and sustainable production. Amberjack partnered directly with one of the world's leading tanneries which allows them to source 100% A-grade full-grain leather - a higher grade than what's typically used in footwear - at a fraction of the cost of other brands. This is leather typically used in shoes that cost two-times their price point.

Their shoes also feature cutting-edge arch support that is heat-activated. The foam is similar to memory foam, like many pillows and bed-tops, but it's more durable and will provide support all day long. As your foot emanates heat, the foam will form perfectly to your foot. With uber soft buck-skin lining, the Amberjack Original features everything you've ever dreamed of in a dress shoe.

However, be sure to pick up a half-size smaller than your usual fit, as recommended by Amberjack themselves. You can stay to your true size if your feet are on the wider side though.

  • Allen Edmonds Review

Allen Edmonds Brand History and Origin

Allen Edmonds has been making some of the most recognizable men's shoes in America ever since 1922. The company was founded as a shoe manufacturing and retail center in Port Washington, before its establishment in Belgium, Wisconsin.

The brand started gaining popularity when Edmonds was commissioned to deliver shoes to the US Navy and US Army during World War II. The company made shoes with responsive cork insoles instead of the awkward metal nails and shanks used in footwear at the time.  Allen's groundbreaking designs quickly found a following with anyone who appreciated a lighter, more flexible dress shoe that was much more comfortable from the very first wear.

Currently, Allen Edmonds is operating over 70 stores, and more to their manufacturing site in the United States, they also make shoes in the Dominican Republic and Italy. Allen Edmonds has maintained a vast signature collection of its leather shoes for men.

Allen Edmonds Quality - Material & Durability

Allen Edmonds has been handcrafting footwear in America using the finest materials from around the world since 1922. It's a time-tested practice that involves 212 different steps, 48 pairs of hands and results in what they're proud to call real shoes.

In addition to their handsewn collection, Allen Edmonds also utilizes the Dominican Republic factory to cut and sew the uppers of their Goodyear welted collection of shoes. Similarly to the "American Made" handsewns, these welted uppers are shipped to the factory in Wisconsin, where the remainder of the lasting, welting, and soling are completed.

  • Conclusion

Wolf & Shepherd vs. Cole Haan vs. Amberjack vs. Allen Edmonds: which dress shoe brand is the Best?

Wolf & Shepherd

By combining technologies used in the fastest running shoes in the world with Italian leather uppers, Wolf & Shepherd is very much like Amberjack in many ways. So while it looks like you're wearing a classic pair of Italian leather Oxfords, Wolf & Shepherd’s goal is that you feel like you're wearing a pair of comfortable sneakers.  But It’s tough to avoid compromising between comfort, professional styling, quality, and price. Certainly Wolf & Shepherd meet a few of these attributes but struggle to find the right balance of all four characteristics.

Cole Haan

Cole Haan are known for comfortable dress shoes, a style that has morphed into current athleisure styles, where dress shoes are appropriate in the office and during off hours. Its appearance is more American and relatively younger. Cole haan's leather shoes produced even have built-in AIR cushions. So while it looks like you' re wearing a classic pair of Italian leather Oxfords, Wolf & Shepherd’s goal is that you feel like you're wearing a pair of comfortable sneakers.

Amberjack

Cole Haan is Amberjack's most direct competition. Still, Amberjack's comfort features are more advanced, such as with the dual-density sole or heat-activated arches, and the brand has designed its shoes to versatility fit in a boardroom or a casual business environment.

Amberjack partnered directly with one of the world's leading tanneries which allows them to source 100% A-grade full-grain leather - a higher grade than what's typically used in footwear - at a fraction of the cost of other brands. I would say the Amberjack Originals are a great value. The only downside is that options are limited and it runs bigger than most standard sizing.

Allen Edmonds

Allen Edmonds has been handcrafting footwear in America using the finest materials from around the world. Most Allen Edmonds shoes are made with top-grain calfskin leather. Allen Edmonds is the only manufacturer of good welted shoes that does not adhere the heel to the shoe by driving the nail through the insole to the insole.  It's a time-tested practice that involves 212 different steps, 48 pairs of hands and results in what they're proud to call real shoes.

Allen Edmonds is a strong competitor because of its brand recognition and reputation, however, their shoes cost two to three times than the others.
