Keen Brand History and Origin

Keen (stylized KEEN) is an American footwear and accessories company based in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 2003 by Martin Keen and Rory Fuerst, the first Keen sandals and shoes were put into production and feature a protective black toe bumper. Keen initially found a niche market in sailing and other outdoor and water activities, and offered products for many outdoor activities as well as lifestyle shoes. It later expanded to a variety of styles, casual and cold-weather footwear, bags, and clothing, including safety work footwear. From one shoe concept to an international success, Keen is the embodiment of the American dream.

Keen Sandals Prices: women's sandals: $49.99- $149.99; mens sandals: $39.99- $150.

Keen Sandals Design & Style

From starting off by asking the simple question of whether a sandal could protect the toes, Keen created the hugely popular Newport range.

Keen shoes were created through a mutual love of sandals and sailing. As anyone who has ever been on a sailboat knows, open-toed sandals are not the best idea. Keen had worked as a shoe designer for big names like Saucony and Timberland, so he set out to create a hybrid shoe that would be comfortable to wear on his boat and in the outdoors. With their diverse product line, there is definitely a Keen shoe out there for everyone.

  • Chaco Review

Chaco Brand History and Origin

Chaco is an American brand of footwear. In 1989, a white water rafting and fly fishing guide named Mark Paigen decided to create an outdoor sandal that allowed his feet to dry in the sun so he wouldn't end his days with wrinkled feet. His goal was to produce a sandal that also provided support to the foot.

By 1991, after making the shoes in a spare room in his house, Paigen began selling his products in a small shop in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Customer feedback led Paigen to consult a pedorthist to improve the overall design of the shoe. After multiple changes, the sandal was ready to be put on the market.  In following years the products gained an international reputation and market.

In 2009, the brand was acquired by Wolverine World Wide, the company that also owns Sperry Top-Sider, Merrell, and a variety of other footwear brands, and the Chaco facilities moved to the Wolverine base in Rockford, Michigan.

Design & Style

Chaco is best known for its product line of adjustable Z-strap sandals for outdoor and water use, often referred to as "Chacos". The flagship line of adjustable outdoor sandals are distinguished by the fact that they use a single strap which loops around the foot through the sole, and so can be adjusted to fit without any extra fastenings.

They are available with a range of sole types and strap configurations, to suit various environments, and the company offers a repair service. The Chaco brand also provides a variety of outdoor-influenced fashion sandals, shoes, flip-flops, boots and accessories.

  • Birkenstock Review

Birkenstock History and Origin

Birkenstock is a shoe manufacturer known for its production of Birkenstocks, a German brand of sandals and other shoes notable for their contoured cork footbeds (soles) made with layers of suede and jute, which conform somewhat to the shape of their wearers' feet.

Founded in 1774 by Johann Adam Birkenstock, the company's original purpose was to create shoes that support and contour the foot, compared to the flat soles of many shoes during that time.

In 1896 the Fussbett (footbed) was created and by 1925 Birkenstocks were sold all over Europe. In February 2021, L Catterton, the private equity firm backed by Bernard Arnault's LVMH, said it had agreed to buy the German footwear group Birkenstock in a deal.

Prices: women's sandals: $34.95-$270; mens sandals: $39.95-$240 ; kids sandals: $34.95-$130.

Design & Style

The most commonly spotted Birkenstocks are those with one or two leather straps and buckles on them, and those have become the staple for both men and women around the world. They are easy to match with trousers, jeans, and even dresses to give a certain 90s chicness. The brand even has even come up with wool covered winter versions of the shoes for comfort all year round.

Birkenstocks come as sandals or slip-ons. The early Birkenstocks assume the color of natural leather that is brown and most times, black. But with lots of advances in the fashion world, footwear comes in different designs and colors, but usually black and brown.

  • Conclusion

Keen vs. Chaco vs. Teva vs. Birkenstock: which brand wins the sandal showdown?

All of these sandals are very stylish and funtional. I think you should make this decision, as the preference ultimately depends on your personal style.

Keen

Keen shoes were created through a mutual love of sandals and sailing, and they are also good for some light submerging – you know, creeks, river, maybe the edge of the sea. Just don't try to swim in them. A Keen shoe has a wider toe box compared to most shoes because it ensures comfort and breathability. Keens are made with toe protection in mind. Most models are strong rubber toe protection.

Chacos

Chacos have more options for sandals to wear in the water and will dry faster. The Chaos are built from rubber, which holds up pretty well in water. They offer a little more arch support and have the option to get a very secure hold on your foot with their options for the toe loop. They have super-adjustable straps which can easily be tailored to your foot. Chacos are perfect for hiking, wading around in rocky rivers and lakes, and paddle boarding or kayaking. Chacos are usually more stylish and more open (fewer straps) – so they are also good for warm weather and wearing out in town.

Tevas

Tevas work great for the casual outdoor enthusiast who enjoys the wild or or doing an activity that requires a water shoe, but also needs a lifestyle sandal for travel, vacation, life in the city and more. Tevas are known for their velcro-strap designs that wear easy, but may lead to more foot movement than in Chacos. Tevas tend to be a little cushier and have a softer footbed. Their designs are outdoorsy without being over-the-top, and versatile without being impractical.  Tevas are generally more affordable, lighter and less durable than Chacos.

Birkenstocks

Birkenstock makes comfortable and beautiful slides and sandals. It has blended both usefulness and style into footwear that could be seen in a man's and a woman's closets. Aside from natural leather, Birkenstocks sandals feature patented synthetic leathers like birko-flor and birkibuc. Some of these sandals are also made with nubuck and suede leathers. Birkenstock sandals are more versatile and stylish than other sandals and slides. The other slides are mostly limited to recovery and indoor footwear, while Birkenstock sandals are for any occasion with any choice of cloth.
