Converse Chuck Taylor All Star vs. Chuck 70: What are the Differences?
Converse Chuck 70 vs. All Star History
1) Converse Chuck Taylor All Star
The Converse All Star was introduced in 1917 under the name "Non Skids". The high-top silhouette was composed of a rubber sole and canvas upper, with a cushioned insole, arch and heel support as well as its now-iconic diamond tread pattern, designed for increased traction.
It was redesigned in 1922. Within a year of Chuck Taylor - a basketball player arrival at the company, Converse had taken his advice on board and restyled the shoe to enhance its flexibility and ankle support. After Converse added Taylor's signature to the ankle patch they became known as Chuck Taylor All Stars -the world's first celebrity-endorsed athletic shoe.
The design of the Chuck Taylor All Star has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in the 1920s. The shoe consists of a stitched upper portion, a toe cap that is usually made of white rubber, and an outsole that is usually made of brown or tan rubber. Although Chuck Taylors are made of various materials such as leather or suede, the original and most widely known version of the shoe is made from cotton canvas. The innovative detail of the original shoe was the "loose lining" of soft canvas that was intended to provide flexibility and prevent blisters.
2) Converse Chuck 70
The Chuck 70 made a dynamic return in 2013, and it takes its design cues from the archive. The shoe is built the same way it was made in the 1960s and 1970s. Converse recreated the retro Chuck 70 design with modern features and materials such as a premium heavy canvas upper and lush interior cushioning. Originally characterised as the pinnacle of function and utility in basketball, this sneaker has become a modern canvas for cultural and creative expression in everyday streetwear.
Reinterpreted and reimagined by well-known designers, artists and celebrities throughout the years , the Chuck 70 sneaker is a modern ode to the classic Chuck Taylor All Star, ultimately becoming one of the most iconic all-purpose sneakers to hit the streets.

Converse Chuck 70 vs. All Star Details
1. The Overall of the Shoes
1) The classic Converse All Star is relatively simple in design; Converse Chuck 70, as the revised version of All Star, is more refined in appearance. The contrasting white stitching that gives the shoes its raw, rugged look is also maintained. Converse has said that the Chuck 70s are based on “the original 1970s design”, so they give off a more retro vibe.
2)The overall appearance of the Chuck 70 is more three-dimensional than the classic. The canvas of the shoes is thicker and tougher. And the classic one looks softer. It looks more laid-back temperament.
2. The Materials
1) When the Chuck Taylor All Star was created, it was made to be a tough and hard-wearing basketball sneaker, using 12oz weave for a material that could withstand even the toughest of forces. However, when Converse made the shift to a lifestyle sneaker, the All Star used a lighter canvas.
2) When the Chuck 70 returned in 2013, the original 12oz fabric returned once again, offering a premium level of durability throughout. The canvas is substantially thicker, resulting in a closer fit that’s more structured, compared with the flexible All Star classic version. The thick canvas on the Chuck 70 means it has no need for additional structures, allowing for a more dynamic fit.
3. The Toe Cap
The toe cap of the Chuck 70s is a slightly different shape than the classic All-Stars; it's slightly smaller and longer proportionally compared with the classic All-Star's toe cap. And the classic toe will appear wider and rounder.
4. The insole and Logo
1)The insole of Chuck 70 feels more supportive and more spongey than the Classic Chuck. This is more evident at the balls of the foot.
2) The logo on the 1970s insole consists of a logo, a five-pointed star, and a rectangular frame, while the classic model only has an English logo.
5. The Midsole
1) Put the Chuck 70 and the All Star next to each other and you'll notice the difference lies in its midsole. With the Chuck 70, Converse has tweaked them to be slightly off-white, a color they call“egret,” but appears more cream that complements its vintage design. It’s also slightly shiny, compared to the original Converse All Star's matte-white.
2) The Chuck 70 offers up a varnished Midsole for a top quality edge, and it's 5mm higher than the All Star, a feature which was initially intended to improve stability during on-court manoeuvres. The Chuck 70 also features a thicker outsole that's made from a singular slab of solid rubber, as opposed to the multi-piece outsole of the the Converse All Star.
6. The Inner
The thinner fabric of the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star isn't quite as supportive as the heavyweight canvas of the Chuck 70, meaning a shaped heel-counter has to be inserted in order for the sneakers to stay structured. The Chuck 70 was blessed with more reactive cushioning than ever before during its 2013 remake, with contemporary arch support meaning these are the most comfortable iteration of the classic sneaker yet.
7. The Reinforced Stitching
The Chuck 70 comes with high foxing and reinforced stitching near the toe, a feature that sneakerheads look out for. It helps reinforce one of the most common stress points on Converse All Star. While the stitching here of the All Star classic shoe is directly turned at a right angle to the sole.
8. Logo on the Back of the Shoe
The logo tab on the back of the All Star Classic Chuck shoe is white, and the star and lettering are black. The 1970s used the 3-star logo, which was black, with the star and letter logo in white.
9. The Stichings on the Heel
The stichings of the Chuck 70 vamp is more refined than the All Star Classic model. There are two obvious white lines at the rear of shoes, while the classic model does not.
10. The Laces and Eyelets
The eyelets of Chuck 70s are also shiny, compared to the matte finish of the Classic Chuck. It’s no surprise that laces of Chuck 70s also feel like an upgrade. They are denser and thicker. The laces are in creamy-white, while the classic laces are in pure white.
11. Medial Eyelets
The medial eyelets enhance airflow. The distance between the two holes in the Chuck 70 is wider; while the Classic Chunck's air holes are closer.
12. Shoe Tongue
Previously, the Converse Chuck existed as a basketball shoe. Due to the indistinguishable appearance of the shoes, players often wear the wrong shoes. There is a “Players Card” graphic, stamped onto the Chuck 70 shoe tongue encourages further personalization with its blank space for a name or initials. And the classic model is a common shoe label.
Conclusion
Both shoes can match clothes very well, and the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star is soft and more laid-back temperament. The Classic Chuck is cheaper, available in more colors, lighter. It's still considered to be one of the top five basketball shoes of all time.
The Converse Chuck 70 is the high-end version that this classic silhouette deserves. The Chuck 70 has thicker canvas, higher rubber foxing, better cushioning, improved arch support, and greater durability. The Converse Chuck 70 is a super versatile, genuinely comfortable and handsome pair of sneakers.
Converse Chuck 70 vs. All Star Fit & Sizing
All Star: True to size
Chuck 70: Side down half a size
With the Chuck 70, I'd suggest sizing down half a size. But the Chuck 70 feels slightly narrower than the regular, though this is probably on account of the structured fit. When first wearing a pair of 70’s you may find them a tad narrow but as they break-in and the canvas loosens up they fit perfectly.
