12 Best Tasting Beers that Don't Taste Like Beer for Non Beer Drinkers

12 Best Tasting Beers that Don't Taste Like Beer for Non Beer Drinkers

What is a good beer for starters, or people who don't typically enjoy the taste of beer? The most common reasons to avoid beer are that it's too bitter to enjoy or that it is thin and flavorless. For bitterness, it's true some beers are much more bitter than other alcoholic beverages such as IPA.Since their flavor depends on hops, they are particularly susceptible to bitterness. If you want to avoid biting beer, a simple rule of thumb is to steer clear of any beer claiming to be an IPA, Pale Ale, or "hoppy." As far as those flavorless watery beers, "light lager" is something with very little, if any, flavor. For just a small step up in flavor intensity look for beers called "pilsner" or a "craft lager." There will be subtle notes of water cracker and white bread mixed with a fruity or floral contribution from the hops. Whether you’re trying to convert your beer-hating friends into beer lovers, or just looking to expand your drinking repertoire, this list will help you find the best beers for people who don’t like the taste of beer!

1, Young's Double Chocolate Stout

CATEGORY: Milk Stout

REGION: England, United Kingdom

ABV: 5.2%

1612508768217668.png

Young’s Double Chocolate Stout is the most popular Milk/Sweet Stout-style beer brands.

The name for Milk Stout or Sweet Stout, also sometimes called Cream Stout, refers to the use of milk sugar in the brewing process. Lactose, an unfermentable sugar/dextrin, adds residual sweetness and body to the beer.

This stout style originated during England’s Victorian era and was favored by those who didn’t like dry, astringent, roasty Irish Stouts. With a deep-brown-to-black body and a creamy tan head, Milk/Sweet Stouts are sweeter than dry stouts and, usually, Oatmeal Stouts. Dark roasted grains provide the color and Stout-like chocolate, coffee and caramel aroma and flavor, while a balancing sweetness from the lactose ranges from moderate to high across examples, with moderate hop bitterness rounding out the mix.

Unsurprisingly for a beer from young’s stable double chocolate stout has been recognized as an award-winning brew on several occasions. 5. 2% abv luxurious and at the same time with a hint of decadence young’s double chocolate stout has it all delivering a satisfying indulgent taste without ever becoming overly sweet.

2, Cantillon Saint Lamvinus Lambic

CATEGORY: Fruit Lambic

REGION: Belgium

ABV: 5%

Lambic can be rightly considered the missing link between the worlds of wine and beer, and Saint Lamvinus takes this one step further by adding grapes normally intended for wine production.

The Cantillon Saint Lamvinus is a very special vintage bottling of Cantillon lambics, with whole, fresh grapes from Bordeaux added right in the oak casks.

This intense, fruity beer that lingers on the palate has a soft red color, very slightly cloudy, little white foam, little carbon.

3, Cantillon Rose De Gambrinus

CATEGORY: Fruit Lambic

REGION: Belgium

ABV: 5%

1612504960453531.png

The Rosé de Gambrinus is a fruit lambic, also called Framboise, brewed with raspberries by Cantillon native of Belgium.

At that time (1986), "Raspberry-Lambic" already was synonymous with a sweet, artificially flavoured beer.
For this, approximately 200g of raspberries per litre of Lambik are macerated for 1-2 months on 20-month old Lambik and then filled into bottles with a third of young Lambik for secondary fermentation.
The resulting Lambik is wonderfully fruity, light but at the same time complex. When stored properly, which is quite possible for several years, the Rosé de Gambrinus develops an even more complex character. A sherry-like complexity and a still dry body become a very special beer experience.

Troegs Dreamweaver Wheat gets four wheat types with Munich and Pils malts, Saaz hops, and a German Wheat yeast strain imparting a spicy, peppery, clove taste with a slight hint of bananas, here's an unfiltered blast of spicy, mouthwatering joy. This beer is not as intense as those flavors in a true German Hefeweizen or Belgian Witbier. Soft, inviting but not sweet or flabby, and hopped with a deft hand. Pours with a beautiful head of dense white foam. Drops into a relatively dry mid sip and a clean finish.

Shiner Ruby Redbird is my favorite, and it's really good for people who aren't that into beer because it's a little sweet.

The start of the new decade might mean ‘trying’ to stick to our 2024 health goals, but cutting back on calories doesn’t mean cutting down on flavor – there’s still a little bit of room to indulge. Texas fan-favorite craft beer Shiner Ruby Redbird is a delicious alternative to a basic vodka soda with just 95-calories with 1g of sugar, 3 carbs and 0g of fat.

This refreshing lager is made from juice from the Texas Ruby Redbird grapefruit from the Rio Grande Valley. It has a bold kick of ginger which melds with the tartness of the citrus for a tasty brew that’s all-natural and guilt-free!

In the ultimate battle of barley and hops, Boulevard Brewing’s über-popular Tank 7 American Saison claimed gold in the American-Belgo-Style Ale category at the 2024 Great American Beer Festival.

Tank 7 is a yellow color with a little bit of cloudiness. It is well carbonated with a two fingers of fluffy white head. It has a sweet light malt flavor with with some citrus notes and a little bit of spice in the finish. This has very little farmhouse funk which is atypical for the style. The alcohol is deceptively masked making for a smooth and drinkable beer.

This Saison is best paired with curried dishes or with fish, and also goes great with earthy style cheeses such as Camembert and Fontina or nutty style cheeses such as Asiago.

8, Westmalle Dubbel

CATEGORY: Dubbel

REGION: Belgium

TYPE: Craft

ABV: 7%

1612512387448977.jpg

Westmalle Dubbel is a classic Belgian dubbel. This is a world-class, balanced brew that offers loads of rich and complex taste thanks to re-fermentation in the bottle.

You pick up touches of caramel, malt and fruity esters reminiscent of ripe banana. The beer pearlises beneath a covering of dense, cream-coloured froth. A lovely lace pattern forms on the inside of the glass once emptied. The long, dry finish of this balanced, mild Trappist beer will stay with you.

After dinner with espresso, paired with sweeter soft cheeses. Try with beef remoulade and rich sauces, or with vegetable soup, or with root vegetables: carrots, beets, parsnips. Pairs beautifully with morel or chanterelle mushrooms.

9, Pilsner Urquell Beer

CATEGORY: Pilsner

REGION: Czech Republic

ABV: 4.4%

Pilsner Urquell is the world's first golden pilsner beer with 4.4% ABV. It is a session beer and refreshing golden pilsner with a slightly sweet maltiness, balanced by a smooth, Saaz hop bitterness,  so every sip tastes perfect.

It is called the “model of meter” among beers. All other pilsners are a better or worse attempt to copy the original – the first ever Pilsner Urquell. With aromas of fresh bread, hints of Saaz hops and honeysuckle, taste notes of caramel maltiness balanced by a distinct bitterness, and a nice creamy mouthfeel and smooth, refreshing finish, it is easy to see why the original pilsner is a great session beer.

A subtle, spicy white pepper note, a hint of citrus from the orange peel and a creamy vanilla finish make Sofie an intriguing choice for champagne drinkers and beer drinkers who are fond of Belgian saisons.

Originally brewed by Belgian farmers to attract the best farm hands, Light and effervescent, they named it for the founder’s granddaughter Sofie.

It is sweet, but not too sweet. It has excellent wine character. If you told someone this was wine, they might believe you: a great crossover beer for pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc drinkers!

11, Blue Moon Belgian White Wheat Beer

CATEGORY: Wheat Ale

REGION: Colorado, United States

ABV: 5.4%

1612515405612052.jpg

Imagined in Belgium and born in Denver, Blue Moon Belgian White was one of the first Belgian-Style Wheat Ales in the United States.

It started with the brewmaster, Keith Villa, wanting to craft a beer inspired by the flavorful Belgian Wits he enjoyed while studying brewing in Belgium. He brewed his interpretation using Valencia orange peel versus the traditional tart CuraI§ao orange peel, for a subtle sweetness, and added a touch of coriander to provide balance. Then he added oats and wheat to create a smooth, creamy finish that's inviting to the palate. As a final touch, he garnished the beer with an orange slice to heighten the citrus aroma and taste.

The flavor starts crisp and tangy and ends with a coriander and orange spiciness. The Valencia orange peel gives a subtle sweetness to the beer.
