Oakley Sutro vs. Sutro Lite vs. Sutro S: Differences and Reviews 2024

Oakley Sutro vs. Sutro Lite vs. Sutro S: Differences and Reviews 2024

Oakley is known for high-quality sport-specific sunglasses. While mixing sports performance with lifestyle, the Sutro is a frame that feels both retro and new. The Oakley Sutros remain among the best cycling sunglasses, and will appeal to the image-conscious rider. However, the eyewear industry is a fast-paced beast with new models, styles and iterations being released almost faster than seasons change. The Oakley Sutro franchise is also taking on a new look. Now Oakley has released four variations of the frame: the original Sutro, Sutro Lite, Sutro S, and Sutro Lite Sweep. This post will detail the differences between Oakley Sutro, Sutro Lite, and Sutro S and help you choose the more suitable one.

Keywords:

  • The original Sutro (Product Linkis what set this collection off. If a BIG lens is what you are going for then this is as good as it gets.

  • The Sutro Lite (Product Linkbuilds upon the foundation of the Sutro design with some impressive updates. The rimless frame design gives you a more unobstructed downward view and Unobtainium textured temples offer more grip than it's predecessor.

  • If you dig the design of the Sutro but it is a bit too large for your face the Sutro S (Product Linkdelivers a solid small to medium fit. The size differs from the original Sutro but this sunglass is packed with all the same great features which you can read more about below.

Oakley Sutro Reviews

The Sutro (Product Linkplays to the “bigger is bolder” trend flooding cycling eyewear at the moment. This frame is definitely made for big heads and faces. Compared to a number of Oakley’s other performance models, the Sutro line provides noticeably more lens coverage along with a more-casual straighter wrap across the height and width of the lens. The Sutro’s frame surrounds the entire one-piece shield-type lens that gives it a goggle-like look. And this large lens also provides fantastic coverage and protection made of impact-resistant Plutonite.

As with most Oakley glasses, the Sutro’s grippier-when-you-sweat rubber is found on the nose piece. Plus the original Sutro sunglasses are available in a variety of colorways (17 colors availiable) including contrast-enhancing Prizm lenses.

Overall, The Sutro fits on the larger end and are likely to best suit medium or larger helmet wearers. The regular Sutro offers a solid feeling, the lens is well protected at the base, and it’s secured tightly in the frame, too.

Highlights:

  • Large, full-frame frame made of lightweight O Matter

  • Unobtainium nosepiece provides extra grip and comfort even when wet

  • Available in a variety of Prizm lenses, including Prizm Road

Oakley Sutro Lite Reviews

Released in the Fall of 2020, Oakley Sutro Lite (Product LinkSunglasses are a semi-rimless version of the popular style Sutro sunglasses. And packed with innovation and a greater field of view, these sunglasses take the Sutro family to the next level.

The Sutro Lite’s semi-rimless design looks a bit more casual and modern than its full-frame brother. And this design also makes the Sutro Lite even more functional for cyclists thanks to the increased field of view and downward visibility, similar to the old school Oakley Razor Blades.

The current Sutro Lite lineup is available with 17 colorways. All of the Sutro Lite colorways feature Prizm Lenses! Oakley’s has made a huge push on Prizm Lenses, with the contrast-enhancing lens technology becoming the standard for most models.

Overall, Oakley definitely upgraded the Sutro lite frame to focus more on cycling while still giving it a lightweight and versatile look. Same with the Sutro, the Sutro fits on the larger end and are likely to best suit medium or larger helmet wearers.

image.png

Highlights:

  • Half-frame design provides greater field of view and improved ventilation

  • Signature large protective lenses for maximum coverage

  • Unobtainium nose rest and temples for increased grip and comfort

  • Available in a variety of Prizm lenses, including Prizm Road

Oakley Sutro S Reviews

Also introduced in the fall of 2020, the Sutro S (Product Link) is the smaller sibling of the original Sutro. Not made for kids like Oakley XS frames, this style is just scaled down to fit small to medium faces.

In scaling down the Sutro frame, Oakley still maintains the large visor frame and coverage. Plus you’ll notice the same classic Sutro full-frame design and angles on the earstems.

Overall, the Sutro S is designed for smaller faces with a marginally narrower lens and fit. If you dig the design of the Sutro but it is a bit too large for your face the Sutro S delivers a solid small to medium fit. The size differs from the original Sutro but this sunglass is packed with all the same great features. The current Sutro S lineup is available with 10 colorways.

image.png

Highlights:

  • Smaller Sutro frame based on the original design for medium to large face shapes

  • Unobtainium nosepiece for added grip

  • Thin temples fit with hats and helmets

  • Available in a variety of Prizm lenses, including Prizm Road

Oakley offers the Sutro/Lite/S with a wide range of lens tints and treatments, including

the company’s premium-priced condition-specific-enhancing Prizm Road and Prizm

Trail options. Lenses can be changed, but you’ll need to bend the frames slightly to do so.

  • The Prizm Road lens offers a fairly dark 20% light transmission while boosting the

contrast and visibility of things like white lines and street signs.

  • Meanwhile, the Prizm Trail Torch lens assumes you’ll be shaded by trees and so features

a far brighter 35% transmission while boosting many of nature’s trail obstacles and

    associated shadows.

Of course, there is an obvious limitation with such condition-specific designs, and that’s

fairly obvious once you go beyond the intended use of the respective lens. For example,

the Prizm Road lens is too dark and dull-feeling when ridden on shady trails, while the

Prizm Trail lens can often feel too bright and weirdly orange when used on the tarmac.

And then things get somewhat confusing when riding gravel.

3. Similarities

  • Full shield coverage for maximum protection.

  • PRIZM Lens Technology fine tunes the separation of colors to boost contrast and make everything in your environment more vivid. This makes details easier to pick up on to elevate your performance and increase your enjoyment no matter what activity is at hand.

  • The saddle bridge is made entirely of Unobtainium for extra grip and increased frame retention.

  • O Matter frame construction keeps this sunglass super lightweight without sacrificing durability.

4. Differences

  • With no bottom frame to obstruct your line of sight, you get a more expansive view in the Sutro Lite than the Sutro.

  • The Sutro Lite also features Unobtainium grip on the inside of the temples. As if Unobtainium isn't grippy enough, it has a textured print to it for even more frame retention.

  • The Sutro S is best for small to medium heads while the Sutro and Sutro Lite fit large heads well. The 'S' in Sutro S refers to the fact it is smaller than the Sutro. However, it is not considered an 'XS' frame. We recommend the Sutro S for small to medium head sizes and not necessarily kids.

  • The wrap or curvature of the lens on the Sutro S is scaled down to fit the smaller frame size so you don't lose out on any coverage on the sides of the frame.

5. Conclusion

The biggest difference between these three sunglasses lies in the frame size, and which one you choose depends on your face shape. Of course, there are some subtle differences that you will have to evaluate for yourself.

Plus, since the Sutro frames are so similar it makes sense to try them on in person if possible. This will give you a better sense of the size and design that works best for your face.

Compared to the Sutro/Sutro S, the newer Sutro Lite offers a subtly snugger fit, uninteruppted peripheral viewing, and tends to have a better handle on hot and/or humid conditions. And while that should be enough to give it the win, there is one obvious drawback to the Sutro Lite – it’s a little flimsy.

The regular Sutro & Sutro S offer a solid feeling, the lens is well protected at the base, and it’s secured tightly in the frame, too. By contrast, the lens in the Sutro Lite actually rattles within the frame when you shake it.
