Today, those looking to avoid dairy have a wonderful array of plant-based options to complement their morning coffees. One of the more popular options is oat-based milk. Oat milk has garnered popularity as a dairy milk alternative in recent years due to its nut-free nature. It tends to have a creamier taste and texture compared to other non-dairy milk, like almond milk. As such, the oat milk market is huge. Research predicts that the oat milk industry will reach a value of $2.6 billion by 2026, and the increasing number of brands selling oat milk reflects that demand. 

    Anyone that has been looking for the best Oat Milk might have heard of Oatly, Oatside, Califia, and Chobani. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to figure out which one is right for you. In this article, we will examine these four Oat Milk brands. Oatly has a range of products including: oat milk, ice cream, cold coffee, yoghurt substitutes, cooking cream, spread, custard and mayonnaise. All products are certified kosher and vegan and are non-GMO project verified. All US Oatly products are certified gluten free. However, in Europe and Asia, Oatly's products are not gluten free.

In the US, Oatly's oat beverages, frozen desserts, and "oatgurt" are offered. Varieties of oat milk available in the US include the following: barista edition, original, chocolate, full fat, and low-fat oat milk. Flavors of oatgurt available in the US include plain, strawberry, peach, black cherry, and mixed berry.

The only nutritional difference between Oatly's original oat milk and barista edition oat milk is fat content. The barista edition contains a slightly higher fat content than the original version (3% versus 1.5%). The higher fat content allows the oat milk to perform better when steamed, frothed, and paired with espresso for coffee drinks, hence the name "barista edition". It also makes for a richer and more pleasant flavor complement to teas in tea lattes and is commonly used as a milk alternative for matcha lattes.

Oatly also offers a nondairy frozen dessert, similar to an ice cream, in several flavors. Flavors available for purchase in the US include chocolate chip, mint chip, coffee, strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, oat, and salted caramel. Oatly frozen desserts are available in store only, in the United States. Oatgurt, a substitute yoghurt, is made with oats and does not contain any dairy. Oatside Reviews 

Oatside is a homegrown brand of Singapore. And it isn’t just Singapore’s first oat milk but also one of Asia’s only “full-stack” food start-ups. Simply put, they own their own production line—to reign over the processes and ingredient sourcing, as opposed to using a third party producer. With everything kept internal in a factory in Bandung, Indonesia, the brand places significance on sustainable sourcing and production. It also prides on being a clean label product, eschewing additives like gums, emulsifiers, artificial flavours or preservatives.

While the running emphasis for alternative milks often appeals to tree-huggers and/or the lactose intolerant, Oatside aims to win over consumers by its taste. Only the highest of quality ingredients are sourced. Founder Benedict Lim believes the barrier to entry for oat milk boils down to the taste. Oatside comes in five iterations—Barista, Chocolate, Mocha, Caramel Macchiato, and Latte Blend.

Oatside holds a creamier, maltier advantage, as compared to the other oat milks out there. Operating full-stack, this allows optimal control over the oat extraction, with oats sourced from Western Australia. By roasting the oats, it also amplifies the malt factor and nuttiness as a whole. Even with a bolder flavour profile, Oatside makes sure not to overshadow the accompanying tea or coffee. It straddles the balance just nicely, which is another important component when you consider its common purpose—often melding with a shot of espresso. Within the heath benefits are an added perk; Oatside comprises beta glucans, which are good for heart health, reduce cholesterol and low in saturated fats.

Califia Reviews 

Califia is named after our California home, and they're best known for their distinct curvy bottle, which sets them apart in the dairy aisle. Since the beginning, Califia farms has been focused on making the transition to plant-based eating easy by bringing the power of plants to make food even more delicious. At Califia Farms, they are on a mission to create a future where plants replace dairy.

There is a lot to love about Califia Farms oat milk, and it has the options of extra creamy, organic, zero sugar, chocolate, and unsweetened blend. Califia Farms barista blend oat milk has 130 calories, 3 grams of added sugar, and 7 grams of fat per cup, according to the company website. Its calorie count and fat content are about average across all of the brands that metioned here, but its sugar content is relatively low. Surprisingly, this oat milk tastes super creamy and satisfyingly sweet. It's very comparable to whole milk. The extra creamy version tasted, well, extra creamy, and we were happy that it wasn't overly sweet. In fact, Califia Farms shares that the extra creamy oat milk has just 4 grams of added sugar per cup, making it one of the oat milk brands we tried with the least amount of added sugar.

Califia Farms' protein-style oat beverages are subpar. The drinks are pleasantly thick and creamy but have a weird aftertaste that is hard to ignore. In iced coffee, the milk doesn't blend super well, and it actually curdles in hot coffee. We'd give a thumbs up to the barista blend for its taste and relatively low sugar content.

Chobani Reviews
