  • Antler Luggage Review

History and Origin

Antler is a British company founded in Lancashire that has been designing and manufacturing luggage since 1914. It made leather trunks for ocean voyages and haversacks during the Second World War. When air travel arrived for the masses in the 1970s, it adapted to the changing needs of travellers. The brand is now based in London and is owned by Strandbags, an Australian bag and accessories group. The company bought Antler in 2020 after it had collapsed into administration.

A rich and colourful history surrounds Antler luggage with a 90 year legacy of tradition and innovation. There is no other luggage maker that can reliably produce quality designs with the most ground breaking features in lightweight and durable composition. They have always innovated where it matters: for example,  the early development of a cushioned grip for their suitcase handles, offering extra comfort. Antler were also one of the first British brands to add wheels to our cases for smoother movement. More than a century later, they have evolved into the definitive British travel brand. Exploration, connection and self-discovery inspire their designs, from the little (luggage tags, water bottles, mini bags) to the large (spacious suitcases, roomy weekenders and matching sets).

Price
Antler proves you don't need to spend an arm and a leg to get quality luggage. The hard shell carry-on luggage starting from $255 to $325; the soft shell luggage priced from $178.50.

Design

Antler is one of best luggage brands on the market, and its cases make it a good all-around option for all travellers. Their luggages have a lot to offer, with spacious compartments, an expandable design and a waterproof documents pocket. But it was the wheels that really stood out on test. They are above average size, so travelled over a variety of surfaces smoothly and quietly. They were agile and robust, too. Plus, the trolley handle moves position when you tilt from four wheels to two for maximum comfort on the go.

You can also pick from a few different carry-on models, each even with convenient features. The Brixham, for example, has the lightest weight and comes with three zipped pockets, two of them internal. The Stamford offers a USB port and quiet Hinomoto wheels, which turn 360 degrees. And one variant of the Clifton model comes with both a laptop and a tablet pocket.

Sizes

Antler offer four sizes luggages. The carry-on with expander  (22"h x 14"w x 9"d) are fit in the overhead bin of nearly any flight, anywhere in the world. The biggest carry-on measures 16 x 23 x 9 inch. The medium checked luggage measures 18 x 26 x 11 inch which  will go the long-haul and fit all you need for a week-long trip or longer.  The large checked luggage measures 20 x 31 x 13 inch.

Material & Durability

The hard shell luggages feature a polycarbonate exterior and colourfast finish, giving it extra strength and longevity for the travels ahead. Compared to polypropylene, polycarbonate has built-in flex, which means it will take hits, falls and heavy impact a little better than polypropylene. Plus, Polycarbonate also performs slightly better in durability tests and is inherently scratch-resistant.The soft shell luggage is made with lightweight recycled polyester, so you can pack more in and worry less.

The Antler luggages are super durable that feel built to last. All are tested to rigorous standards—Antler have a 12-point testing programme to ensure every piece meets the high standards they have come to be known for. The wheels, handles and zips seem well-made and operate smoothly. Although they are bound to get scratched, any scratches shouldn’t show up too badly.

Warranty

For luggages purchased prior to 15th May 2023, Antler will continue to honour their previously sold 10-year warranty. For purchases after 15th May 2023, Antler have a lifetime warranty on all our suitcases, including their hard-sided and soft-sided collections, in all sizes—cabin, medium and large. The warranty covers manufacturing faults only and does not cover refunds beyond their standard returns period of 28 days. The warranty covers faults caused by defective workmanship or materials but excludes mishandling by carriers such as airport baggage handlers. The warranty does not cover damage due to general wear and tear.

If you would like to make a claim on the warranty, Antler will need to see proof of purchase, so please keep your confirmation email or receipt, and you must have registered your warranty online within 30 days of purchase.

  • Monos Luggage Review

History and Origin

Monos is a Canadian company with headquarters in Vancouver. The company says that the Japanese phrase “mono no aware” inspired the name Monos. This concept, borrowed from the Japanese, refers to savouring the fleeting pleasures of the present. According to Monos, high-quality, thoughtfully built baggage doesn't need to shout about its greatness. The company emphasises quality more than quantity and goes to considerable lengths to ensure that its designs will last the test of time.

Monos doesn't have as many suitcase options as the other luggage brands on our list, but it's worth mentioning it's still one of the best suitcases on the market. Lovingly designed in Canada with meticulous attention to detail, each Monos suitcase uses only the finest quality parts and materials sourced from around the world. All of the carbon emissions generated by Monos’s production, shipping, and other operations have been verified as being neutralized via reforestation projects, earning the company the Climate Neutral Certified label. In addition, as a 1% for the Planet member, the firm gives back to charitable causes by donating 1% of its annual profits.

Price

High-end luxury luggage is typically priced well out of reach of the average person, ranging from $700 to over $1,000 USD for a carry-on. Monos uses the same materials and factories as these top brands, but because they sell directly to you, they can offer their Carry-On luggages for a fraction of the price - range from $255 - $455.

Designs

With no outside patterns or pockets, Monos luggage is the epitome of minimalism, which is why it is so popular among minimalist travellers. Monos says its design philosophy is "less is more," — meaning the bags are made to be simple and timeless to avoid passing trends, and high quality so they can stand the test of time. So it may not appeal to travellers who value sophistication.Currently, Monos has two sizes of carry-on that either come with a front pocket or not depending on your preferences, plus a medium-sized roller bag and a checked luggage option.

One of the unique features of Monos is the handle; you don't have to push to unlock the button for the extendable handle to come up as most luggage does. All you need to do when you want to pull out your handle is to fo reach out under the grip and pull up in on the swift movement. Monos luggage also has high-performance, whisper-quiet 360º spinner wheels that glide effortlessly from narrow airplane aisles to bumpy cobblestone streets. They also have useful packing features like wide compression straps to help you fit more in the case.Plus, brands are focusing on the small details, too. Monos also has created custom, modular parts for its suitcases that can be replaced.

Sizes

Designed to comply with the size restrictions of as many airlines as possible, the Monos Carry-On Luggages fit in the overhead bin of nearly any flight, anywhere in the world. Monos sizes have Carry-On, /Carry-On Pro (22"h x 14"w x 9"d), Carry-On Plus/Carry-On Pro Plus (23"h x 15" w x 9.5"d), Check-In Medium(26.5"h × 18.5"w × 10.5"d), Check in Large (30"h  × 21"h  × 11"h). The Monos Carry-On Pro Plus is the best for extra space on bigger flights, while the Carry-On Pro will fit in almost all overhead bins.

Material & Durability

Most Monos luggage cases are vacuum-formed with an extraordinarily resilient material – the German Makrolon polycarbonate. The lightweight, aerospace-grade material is sturdy and difficult to break unless you try really hard. Its flexibility enables it to absorb energy from impacts springing it back into shape. Some even combine polycarbonate and aluminum for increased durability.

Plus, Monos uses an eco-friendly and biodegradable polymer known as TPE to manufacture its suitcase’s gaskets and spine. Most brands on the market now choose the highly toxic and non-recyclable PVC material, which is less expensive. But Monos prioritises quality material, ensuring they meet stringent standards. To ensure the highest level of quality and durability, they put their products and materials through a battery of 40 tests. In a word, Monos luggages are durable and serve the customers for a long time mostly.

Warranty

All Monos luggage purchased directly from Monos offical site is backed by a lifetime warranty extended to the original owner of the item. Monos products purchased through authorized third-party retailers are also backed by their lifetime warranty.

The warranty covers: cracks or breaks in the shell; wheels, handles, or telescoping handles that break off or are no longer usable; broken zippers. However, the warranty does not cover cosmetic damages such as dent, scratches, dents, scuffs, stains, colour changes, or normal wear and tear. It's also worth noting that the brand has a 100-day return period so you can get a refund if it's not a good fit.

Material & Durability

Roam's luggages are as sturdy as they are good-looking, thanks to 100%, US virgin polycarbonate exteriors (the gold standard for hardside luggage), aircraft-grade aluminum telescopic handles and ultra-smooth Hinomoto spinner wheels. It held up beautifully against my attempts to destroy it by tossing it down the stairs, smacking it with a hammer and jumping on it.

Polycarbonate is a type of plastic that is extremely difficult to break. This high-tech plastic can be easily molded and colored during the manufacturing process, and it's incredibly lightweight for the strength it provides.  It's also more resistant to scratches than other materials used to make hard shell suitcases. Plus, rain or shine, your belongings are nestled in security with features like their water-resistant zippers and elegant jacquard lining, crafted from 100% recycled materials.

Warranty

All ROAM luggages are backed by their lifetime limited warranty, which covers any non-cosmetic damage that your case might incur, due to manufacturer defects, including cracks in the front or back shell; wheels, handles, or telescoping handles that are no longer usable; zippers that can no longer be opened or closed; fabric tears that render linings and compression boards non-functional.

The warranty extends to polycarbonate luggage manufactured by ROAM Luggage, Inc. (“ROAM”) and purchased directly from ROAM or ROAM’s authorized retailers (the “Luggage”). Luggage is designed to be used for travel, and this Warranty does not cover Luggage used in a manner not related to travel.

Plus, ROAM offer a 100-day trial period for all orders. If you don’t agree that ROAM is the best suitcase in the world, you can return your case— even if you’ve taken it on a trip or two in the meantime.

  • Away Luggage Review

History and Origin

Away Travel is a travel bag brand out of New York, USA. Launched in 2015 after founder Jen Rubio’s luggage broke in an airport in Switzerland. Her clothes and toiletries poured out of her suitcase and onto the airport floor. She ended up finding some straps and tape to get the suitcase functional enough to get to her next destination. After that, Rubio was on the hunt for a better suitcase. She reached out to her former colleague at American glasses brand Warby Parker, Stephanie Korey and the two came up with the idea for a durable hard-shell suitcase with wheels and a built-in battery pack capable of charging phones and tablets.

Now Away Travel sells a range of accessories, including backpacks, carry-On luggages, checked suitcases, packing cubes, and duffels.  Their luggages and travel bags are instantly recognizable thanks to their sleek, clean aesthetic, shell design, and palettes that include neutrals and metallics. As one of the best luggage brands with a lifetime guarantee, Away is also known for revolutionizing the suitcase game with its built-in portable chargers. It has managed to make a rather ho-hum item an object of intense Instagram lust through celebrity collaborations, limited edition designs, and plenty of personalization options.

Price

Away is certainly not the cheapest luggage brand out there, but it's also far from the most expensive. High-quality luggage can run upward of $600, but Away keeps its costs down by selling directly to the consumer. Their carry on  luggages price are range from $275 - $645. Their checked luggages are priced from $345 - $725.

Design

Though Away was initially founded on its luggage’s ability to recharge your iPhones, the brand has expanded into a full range of suitcases—batteries not always included! Their luggages have a minimalist-modern aesthetic and a sophisticated yet practical appeal.  Away luggages are known for their 360-degree wheels, durable and lightweight constructions, and TSA-accepted locks. Plus, Away also recognised a huge and historic gap in the luggage market: colour.  You can choose from a range of classic and out-of-the-ordinary matte and metallic colors.

Beyond aesthetic appeal, Away flaunts plenty of pockets and compartments that keep all of your items in place. Designed with space efficiency in mind, Away’s hard sided luggage has a large interior space which makes packing significantly less of a hassle.Because Away’s suitcases are a clamshell style, all of its suitcases have two compartments. One features a mesh zipper divider and the other boasts a unique packing strap system. The Garment Bag also has interior padding that keeps all of your long clothing items protected and helps to minimize wrinkles. Some models even comes with a rechargeable, removable power bank, saving you the trouble of constantly searching for a power plug to sit next to at the airport.

Size

Away suitcases come in four sizes. The Carry-On is their smallest suitcase, which weighs 7.6 pounds and has a capacity of about 40 liters, sized to fit in all overhead bins and perfect for any quick trip. The Bigger Carry-On is built to fit the luggage sizers airlines actually use, which, according to Away, are in fact larger than the stated dimensions required of carry-on items. (Sneaky!) Having noticed this loophole, Away beefed up the size of its Bigger Carry-On for those who want to squeeze in a few extra outfits. There are a Medium and a Large version for checked baggage. With capacities of 68.8 liters (about 2.4 cubic feet) and 99.2 liters (3.5 cubic feet), these are excellent suitcases for longer trips.

Material & Durability

Away offers hard sided luggage only, made out of 100% polycarbonate materials. It is more durable than aluminum but lighter than other metals. Polycarbonate is the best luggage material. It’s superior to other hard-side materials such as plastics that can withstand countless climates and condition of your travel adventure would be.

The 360 spinner wheels are partially recessed, which helps protect them from too many blows in case you decide to check it.They didn't sustain any dents from the baseball bat tests, but there were a few scratches after be shoved off a table. In a word,  the Away luggage is still very sturdy.

Warranty

Away's suitcases are guaranteed by a limited lifetime warranty that covers any functional damage to the shell, wheels, handles, zippers, or anything else that impairs your use of the luggage. If anything breaks, They will provide a repair kit or replacement. With a limited warranty that covers damage to most elements, trying it is risk-free.

Plus, Away also offers free returns and exchanges on unused items for the first 100 days.
