CamelBak Eddy Review

Price: $14.95-$23.50 at Amazon

During a hot summer bike race in 1988, Michael Eidson needed a better way to stay hydrated, so he made the very first hydration pack out of an IV bag, a tube sock, and a clothes pin. Eventually, Camelbak expanded into bottles with the very popular Better Bottle. Then in 2012 Camelbak replaced the Better Bottle with the new and improved Eddy.  Like the Better Bottle, the Eddy is made out of BPA-free Tritan copolyester for toughness, clarity, and dishwashability.  But unlike the Better Bottle, the Eddy features a wider straw for easier drinking and a slightly modified bite valve design for improved durability.

The CamelBak eddy has set itself apart from the other bottles with its flippable bite valve and internal straw. The design is intended to allow for spill-free, quick access to your water and is great for single-handed use.The loop handle makes it easy to clip to a pack or comfortably carry in the crook of your finger. The spill-proof design, durable construction and BPA-free materials make it an ideal bottle for work or play.

R&D is still done in Camelbak’s Northern California research facility, but not a single part of the Eddy is made in America. The company manufactures every part in China from the polypropylene straw to the silicone bite valve. The only slight exception is the Tritan copolyester, which Camelbak ships to China from the US in stock plastic pellets, which are then molded into the bottle part of the Eddy.

CamelBak Eddy+ with Tritan Renew Review

Price: $11.25-$37.50 at CamelBak

The Camelbak Eddy+ debuted in 2019 is a slightly updated version of the classic Eddy bottle.Camelbak took an already well-designed bottle and made some useful modifications that make it an excellent choice for active people who want a lightweight hydration companion. The biggest feature that sets the Eddy apart is its straw feature. The straw folds out when in use and collapses into the lid when stowed. This updated version of the Eddy has an improved straw that is more leak proof than its predecessor.

As far as the design, the Eddy+ is stylish and practical. With over a dozen colors to choose from, ranging from charcoal to rose, there is a match for every personal style. The Eddy+ everyday water bottle is now made with Tritan™ Renew, a highly durable and lightweight plastic made with 50% recycled material. Leak-proof when closed and spill-proof when open, the universal Eddy + straw cap and bite-valve interface delivers a high flow and is compatible with Chute Mag and Carry Cap vessels. Tritan Renew is made using Polyester Renewal Technology, a recycling process that’s more efficient than standard mechanical recycling, producing new material with less demand on finite resources. Odor and stain resistant, dishwasher safe, and free of BPA, BPS, and BPF.

CamelBak Chute Mag Bottle with Tritan Renew Review

Price: $11.25-$27

The lightweight and durable Chute Mag water bottle is also made with Tritan Renew, a highly durable and lightweight plastic made with 50% recycled material. The best thing about this bottle is the magnetic cap. It keeps the top from hitting you in the face, and it keeps you from losing it. It's leak-proof when closed, stows securely out of the way when drinking, and is compatible with Eddy+ and Carry Cap vessels. The comfortable carry handle makes for grab-and-go convenience and when the day is over, just toss in the dishwasher and prepare for your next adventure.

It’s lightweight while still feeling durable. Plastic materials are free of BPA, BPS, and BPF.This CamelBak water bottle isn’t one of those high-end drinkwares. No double-wall insulation. It’s in the mid-range of the market, but for what it does, it does quite well. But its water-and-water-only focus will aid in making sure you get your healthy dose regularly. It appeals to hikers, fitness freaks and even commuters. The general construction of the whole bottle is durable as well. No issues after having taken it on multiple international trips and family adventures. Overall, Iit is an excellent everyday plastic water bottle.

Where to Buy CamelBak Chute Mag Water Bottle?

CamelBak Eddy vs. Eddy+ vs. Chute Mag: Comparison Side by Side

1. Ease of Use

CamelBak Eddy - This bottle features a four-piece bottle, consisting of a plastic body, cap, straw, and a silicone big bite valve. The body is narrow enough to fit into most cup holders, and its straw permits one-handed drinking without tilting one's head; most useful while driving and cycling. It also won't spill, and the loop on the cap is secure enough to trust. The great drawback was the slow flow of water through the straw. While fine for sips in the office, it consistently left us wanting more during exercise.

CamelBak Eddy+ - It seems like the Camelbak Eddy+ is designed with this metric in mind. The whole point of the bottle is to make drinking easy. The retractable straw feature and carrying handle make up the bulk of the lid. The carrying handle is large enough for three fingers to fit into it and allows the bottle to be carried easily in hand. The retractable straw is the Eddy+'s claim to fame. When the straw is in the closed position, it is out of the way and doesn't leak. When open, the straw will leak a little bit if tipped on its side or upside down.

CamelBak Chute Mag - Expect a hassle-free hydrating experience when you use this CamelBak water bottle. It offers you a simple design with a surprise, the “Mag,” the Magnetic stow cap. This innovation keeps the cap away from your face while you’re drinking. It sticks to the lid once flipped open with the help of a magnet. That’s great when driving, allowing you to easily flip open the sipping flap, drink, and then flip it closed again.

2. Ease of Cleaning

CamelBak Eddy - This bottle took a long time to clean, with several parts that were difficult to fully clean. Here it is also worth noting that the bite valve remains exposed in both the stowing and drinking positions. You will foresee the likelihood for bacteria and gunk build up inside the bite valve.

CamelBak Eddy+ - In some ways, the Eddy+ is easy to clean - with only a few different parts that are all dishwasher safe and able to be disassembled fairly quickly and easily. On the other hand, the bottle seems to attract mold and get dirty pretty quickly with consistent use. You will find the straw and to be pretty hard to clean by hand.

CamelBak Chute Mag - This Chute Mag water bottle is dishwasher-friendly, making it a breeze to maintain. It’s a plus if you don’t have the time to hand wash. You won’t have any troubles taking apart the CamelBak Chute Mag Water Bottle before cleaning. It’s as simple as removing the lid from the water bottle.

3. Taste

CamelBak Eddy - The eddy performed poorly in taste tests. The silicone bite valve gives off a strong taste of rubber, even after several washes. It also retained the flavor of sports drink even after washing. Once tainted with the taste of a flavored drink, the eddy was difficult to get back to neutral, despite cleaning the bottle with baking soda and vinegar.

CamelBak Eddy+ - The Eddy+ did not excel in this metric. The rubbery bite valve and straw seemed to impart flavor. When you fill the bottle with sports drink mix, these fruity flavors seemed to linger for days after. Also, the Eddy+ had a plastic-y flavor initially that took a few days of use to get rid of.

CamelBak Chute Mag - Even though it’s plastic, rest assured that you can enjoy every gulp without any unwanted smell or taste. If you’re someone who enjoys flavored drinks, this CamelBak water wattle is just ok for your needs.

4. Durability

CamelBak Eddy - It bounced off the concrete in drop tests, suffering only minor scratches. The plastic on the lid is very burly and won't shatter on impact.

CamelBak Eddy+ - Overall, this bottle proved to be very durable. Its plastic body bounced off the ground when dropped, remaining pretty much unscathed. The updated lid seems like it is made out of more burly plastic than the previous version of this bottle, improving its overall durability. The straw and bite valve are the weakest points of this bottle, and if you are prone to chewing on the straw, it will definitely wear out quickly. Luckily, Camelbak sells replacement parts for the bottle online.

CamelBak Chute Mag - Whether you accidentally drop it or you throw it without a care inside your backpack, this CamelBak water bottle can stand the impact.

Conclusion: Which Bottle Should You Choose?

In summary, the CamelBak Chute Mag Water Bottle is the epitome of convenience, style, and functionality. Its innovative features and durable design make it an essential companion for outdoor adventures, gym sessions, or daily activities.

The Camelbak Eddy or Eddy+ is a slightly revised version of a classic. If you like drinking from a straw and bite valve, you might find more value from this bottle than we did. However, we found this feature to be more of a disadvantage, as it made the water harder to access in gulps, tainted the flavor, and made the bottle overall more difficult to clean.Overall, Eddy+ is a good bottle, but not my favorite pick.
