Chaco Cloud vs. Cloud 2 vs. Mega Cloud: Overview

1. Chaco Cloud

Official Price: $74.99 - $105

Reviews: The Chaco Cloud sandals combine timeless style with unparalleled comfort and durability.They are made with 32mm webbing, Chaco's signature LUVSEAT™ footbed, and ChacoGrip™ rubber outsole. The lightly textured yet soft and springy footbed does wonders for all day comfort after long hikes on the trail or tedious hours on the feet around town. The grippy ChacoGrip outsole had us feeling rock steady even on wet surfaces while the dual-density midsole brought a soft touch to every stride.

The Chaco Cloud sandals also use a very unique adjustment system that threads their webbing through the midsole, meaning tugging them in a certain sequence cinches each strap to your foot perfectly.  The 3 mm lugs provide excellent slip resistance on loose gravel and soft terrain. With its versatility and durability, the Z/Cloud never let us down whether we were trekking wooded hillsides, strolling stony beaches, or even navigating the concrete jungle. Because it is slightly more oriented towards comfort than performance, the Z/Cloud is best suited as a general all-purpose sandal but is still capable of tackling extended hikes and sporty terrain.

Features:

  • Polyester Jacquard webbing uppers and high-tensile webbing heel risers with durable ladderlock buckles wrap around your feet and through the midsoles for a customized fit;

  • 5mm of soft polyurethane cushioning top the podiatrist-certified, durable Luvseat midsoles and heel cups for all-day comfort and arch support;

  • Antimicrobial application for odor control;

  • Nonmarking ChacoGrip rubber compound outsoles with 3.5mm lug depth provide traction on wet and dry surfaces.

Traction

The Chaco Cloud sandals features ChacoGrip rubber and tread pattern which performed well on various wet and dry surfaces. The rubber is forgiving enough to bend and grip on contoured terrain. The diamond tread pattern can help to lock in a secure footing, which ultimately aids in overall traction.

In traction arena, the Chaco Cloud 2 sandals are also outstanding. Like the Chaco Cloud sandals, they have large lugs on the bottoms of their soles, made of non-marking ChacoGrip rubber which offer strong and reliable traction whether inside wet inflatable rafts and along wet docking or scrambling up and down gravely hillsides and over slippery boulders. Plus, the close-knit diamond pattern helps to give your bare foot something to grip while you walk. They also provides traction for sweaty and wet feet, aided by the strap over your big toe.

The Chaco Mega Cloud's ability to hold a confident grip on the terrain it was covering. A stiff sole and proprietary grippy rubber tread give this sandal a competitive traction. Plus,  sticky in some spots and firm in others, the tread pattern of the Chaco Mega Cloud is designed to maintain traction on variable terrain or when the conditions are expected to be challenging.

Stability

The softer and lighter midsole material makes Chaco Cloud sandals slightly less stable than its classic Chaco counterpart. While it sports the same rugged outsole that is substantially thicker and stiffer than most sandals, there is noticeably more flexibility in the Cloud sandals compared to the Classic sandals. However, the Chaco Cloud isn't an unstable sandal by any means as I still managed to tackle all manner of tricky trails with surefooted confidence while testing this sandal.

This is another area where Chaco Cloud 2 knocks it out of the park. Compared to Chaco Cloud sandlas, by anchoring your big toe against the footbed, the Chaco Cloud 2 provides exceptional stability.

The Chaco Mega Cloud sandal features an extra-burly sole material that is both rugged and supportive.  Even in rough conditions, this sandal has enough stability to cover serious ground. However, it is still slightly inferior to the stability of Chaco Cloud 2.

Comfort

The Chaco Cloud sandals features softer, lighter soles to provide more comfort during extended use outings. The softer material may not offer the same arch support as the classic Chaco, though it does conform to the foot a little better and helps minimize pressure points.

Same as  Chaco Cloud sandal, the Chaco Cloud 2 has all the right attributes to keep your feet comfortable on even the longest days — as long as you don't have flat feet or low arches. The webbing straps are soft and pliable, without any scratchiness or sharp edges, and the width provides excellent support without feeling oppressive. Even when wet, the straps are still comfortable to wear.

The Chaco Mega Cloud is the most comfortable sandal among the three.The extra-wide webbing is more supportive, pliable, and ultimately more comfortable than the webbing found on Chacos Cloud and Cloud 2. Coupled with a cushier footbed that forms to the foot, the Chaco Mega Cloud is an all-star performer in the realm of comfort.

Bottom Line

The Chaco Cloud sandals are exceptionally durable and comfortable, plus they perform well in a wide variety of environments – even slippery conditions. The "cloud" means the top of the footbed is made of a soft polyurethane that has more "give" than the Chaco Z Classic. The Chaco Cloud sandals not only for hiking, but also for general day-to-day use.  I consider the Chaco Cloud to be one of the best do-it-all adventure sandals available. I highly recommend them to anyone that’s interested in a versatile pair of footwear that can take a beating while still looking good in action.

If you're interested in the Chaco Cloud sandals but want a different strap design, I highly recommend checking out the Chaco Cloud 2 – it’s the same sandal, but it comes with a toe loop. The Chaco Cloud 2's  "2" refers to that strap over your big toe. The main value of that big toe strap is that it gives your foot a much better degree of stability in the shoe when you are in and around water. So if you want a pair of sandals that can stay put on your feet, keep you upright when crossing challenging surfaces, provide comfort on even the longest days, and last through years of intense and frequent adventuring, the Chaco Chaco 2 is also a good choice.

Chaco Mega Z/Cloud sandals up the comfort with the Chaco Cloud cushioned footbed, while the no-slip traction sole takes you from trail to river without losing a step. Extra-wide 32 mm straps will more shape to fit your feet. In a word, the Mega Cloud has wider webbing and a softer footbed; all of which provide excellent comfort and classic Chaco dependability.
