Editor's review

We know it's safe and reliable because Colgate® Optic White® Advanced Sparkling White® is the first toothpaste to be awarded the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance in the at-home tooth bleaching category.

Backed by science, the ADA Seal of Approval helps eliminate the confusion when buying a product you can trust, and you can feel confident choosing a whitening toothpaste that's specially formulated to transcend surface stains and whiten deeply, unlike other generic toothpastes.

That said, unlike many other whitening toothpastes, Colgate® Optic White® Advanced Sparkling White® removes both types of stains from teeth: extrinsic and intrinsic.

The highly effective whitening power of this toothpaste lies in the bleaching agent - two percent hydrogen peroxide.

After four weeks of testing, we could see visibly whiter teeth, offsetting years of tea, coffee and red wine stains. This toothpaste is best for removing surface stains or whitening teeth.

Since bleach takes a while to work, the longer you leave it on your teeth while brushing, the more effective it will be.

Colgate® Optic White® Advanced, like other products in our guide to the best whitening toothpastes, contains mildly abrasive silica that scrubs away stains and polishes teeth.

Many cosmetic dentists also recommend this toothpaste because it also contains fluoride to prevent cavities.

Something to consider is that sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) may cause irritation in some users, including mouth sores. If you know this is a concern for you, this may not be the best option for you.

Enriched with hydrogen peroxide, silica and fluoride, Colgate® Optic White® Advanced is even more affordable at just $10.46 for two boxes with the chance to earn cash back.

Colgate® Optic White® is also great as an everyday toothpaste, it also has a refreshing mint flavor that lathers well in the mouth without creating a lot of lather.

  • Whitening Ingredients: Hydrogen peroxide, silica

  • Fluoride: Yes

  • Size: 3.2 oz

  • Flavor: mint

Customer Reviews:

Reviews have been rave, with one person saying: "After a few months of use, my dentist noticed that my teeth were three shades whiter than the color scheme I recorded a few years ago."

Another said their teeth "look better than they have in years," despite drinking a lot of coffee. If I use a different toothpaste, I'll see my teeth turn yellow. I switched back to this stuff and within a few days, my teeth were white again.

Someone else said, "I love that my teeth have not needed whitening retouched for many years now as it has maintained the whitening. Also, all my dentists swear that Colgate is the best for your dental health."

Our Ratings

  • Effectiveness: 4.9/5

  • Comfort: 4.8/5

  • Taste: 4.6/5

What we like

  • Contains 3% hydrogen peroxide, which can clean the surface layer and whiten the inner layer.

  • Effectively removes stains

  • Safe for tooth enamel

  • Sugar-free, gluten-free and vegan

  • Refreshing mint taste

What we don’t like

  • May be too strong for sensitive teeth and gums

  • May cause burning sensation

  • The texture is watery

Editor's review

Colgate® Optic White® Renewal toothpaste contains 3% hydrogen peroxide, which is the highest amount of the professionally-recommended whitening ingredient available in a toothpaste.

This Colgate® Optic White® Renewal toothpaste has unprecedented whitening power and can remove up to 10 years of yellow stains with brushing twice a day for 4 weeks.

We can prove that it really works, and by following the instructions, we eliminated stubborn stains caused by cigarettes, red wine, tea, and coffee in just 3 weeks. It also works on both extrinsic and intrinsic stains.

It contains mild abrasives that scrub stains and polish teeth. Plus, its formula contains fluoride to prevent tooth decay. It forms a protective layer on the teeth, allowing the hydrogen peroxide to continue its whitening action beyond time spent actively brushing.

Be aware that toothpastes contain levels of hydrogen peroxide that may be uncomfortable for some people to use, especially those with sensitive teeth. Some users also report a burning sensation in their gums after long-term use.

The texture of this toothpaste is less paste-like, more thin and watery. The mint flavor is also less strong, more like a spearmint gum flavor rather than a strong peppermint flavor.

Say goodbye to dull, stained teeth and hello to a brighter, more confident smile with Colgate Optic White Renewal Teeth Whitening Toothpaste.

Product Details:

  • Whitening Ingredients: Hydrogen peroxide, silica

  • Fluoride: Yes

  • Size: 3 oz

  • Flavor: like a spearmint gum flavor

Customer Reviews:

There are many users of Colgate Optic White Renewal Teeth Whitening Toothpaste, and many have left positive reviews:

“Honestly, I have to give it to Colgate on this one. I didn't expect too much out of this product and was very quickly proven wrong. Not only did it do what was advertised and gradually whiten my teeth, but it also has an appealing flavor that is not too minty or over the top. Great product! ”

“This toothpaste leaves my mouth feeling clean and my teeth smooth. I can feel the difference inside my mouth and see the change in the look of the enamel on my teeth. ”

  • Ingredients might irritate your gums or cause your mouth to feel dry after brushing

Editor's review

If you're more traditional, I recommend the Colgate® Baking Soda And Peroxide Whitening Bubbles Toothpaste because it has a strategic blend of fluoride, baking soda, and calcium peroxide.

While baking soda can sometimes produce an unpleasant bitter taste and rough texture, this toothpaste has a pleasant taste and texture.

The light mint flavor is mild and pleasant with no "burn" sensation; the baking soda does not create a harsh taste or feel; it has a smooth application and texture. That's why this toothpaste gets five out of five stars for comfort and taste.

Baking soda is a mild abrasive, so it helps remove stains from the surface of your teeth, and is especially helpful in removing stains from food and drinks such as coffee, tea, and red wine.

Calcium peroxide is used to whiten teeth by removing extrinsic and intrinsic stains. It has clinically proven whitening power and is gentle and safe for everyday use.

It’s important to note, however, that these ingredients might cause a reaction in those with ultra-sensitive teeth or gums.

This unique formula releases oxygen bubbles as you brush for a fresh, clean feeling.

In testing, the whitening effect didn't take effect quickly, but regular use of this toothpaste resulted in noticeable changes in tooth color over time.

The price is another selling point, it’s really cheap, 6 ounces is only $2.12, you can even save more money by buying 3 boxes at a time, and you also have the opportunity to get cash back offers.

Product Details:

  • Whitening Ingredients: Baking soda, peroxide, silica

  • Fluoride: Yes

  • Size: 6 oz

  • Flavor: mint

Customer Reviews:

It has a long history, many users, and a high rate of positive reviews:

"My husband loves Colgate Baking Soda and Peroxide Whitening toothpaste. He prefers the paste formula and likes the fresh mint flavor. He especially likes the invigorating feel of the bubbly peroxide in his mouth. It leaves his mouth feeling fresher, and his teeth looking whiter. "

"I was hesitant because usually baking soda toothpaste is gritty and less minty but this wasn't too bad of a texture and more minty than most so I'm happy! "

#4. Arm & Hammer Advance White Extreme Whitening Toothpaste

($3.98 FROM Walmart - Get Up To 4% Cash Back)

($6.27, 2 Pack FROM Walmart - Get Up To 4% Cash Back)

Our Ratings

  • Effectiveness: 4.3/5

  • Comfort: 4/5

  • Taste: 4/5

What we like

  • Helps to remove plaque

  • Neutralizes acid

  • Fights cavities

  • Effective

  • Budget friendly

What we don’t like

  • Only whitens teeth in two shades

  • Cannot remove internal stains

  • The strong mint flavor and bitter baking soda in the toothpaste give it a bad taste, which may be overpowering for some first-time users

  • Has a grainy texture

Editor's review

Similar to Colgate® Baking Soda And Peroxide Whitening Bubbles Toothpaste, ARM & HAMMER Advanced White utilizes baking soda, which acts as an abrasive to effectively remove stubborn stains from teeth.

In addition to cleaning and cooking, baking soda has long been a go-to ingredient for healthy oral care. To prove how powerful its clinical benefits are, the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) published a study on baking soda toothpaste. Further clinical studies show that ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda Toothpaste is more effective than non-baking soda toothpaste.

Removes up to 3x more plaque in hard-to-reach areas; neutralize plaque acids fast with a pH of about 8.43.

It also contains a second abrasive: silica. Additionally, this toothpaste is formulated with sodium fluoride, which is great at strengthening tooth enamel and preventing cavities.

As for the effect, it is definitely not as good as the Colgate brand. First, ARM & HAMMER can only whiten teeth in 2 shades, but Colgate can whiten teeth in 4 shades. Secondly, ARM & HAMMER takes up to 4-6 weeks to produce visible brightening results, but Colgate produces visible brightening results in just 2-4 weeks.

It contains a lot of baking soda, which can cause the toothpaste to have a rough, somewhat grainy texture. When you use it, the taste is a bit bitter at first, but you will get used to it if you continue to use it.

Product Details:

  • Whitening Ingredients: baking soda, silica

  • Fluoride: Yes

  • Size: 4.3 oz

  • Flavor: mint

Customer Reviews:

It is a brand that users have been familiar with for a long time:

"I recommend Arm & Hammer Advance White because it uses the natural power of baking soda to neutralize acids that can weaken and erode the enamel on your teeth."

"Not the greatest-tasting, but that is a small sacrifice for healthy teeth and gums."

  • Lots of air in tube, per reviews

Editor's review

Sensodyne toothpaste is known to reduce tooth sensitivity in some people who have used it.

If you have sensitive teeth and find some whitening toothpastes too harsh, we recommend Sensodyne Extra Whitening.

The ingredient used for teeth whitening is sodium tripolyphosphate, which blocks food particles from settling on the teeth. If you like eating chocolate and drinking soda, it might be great for getting rid of those dark things.

If you have tooth sensitivity, it can be difficult to find the best toothpaste to whiten your teeth. The good news is that regular use of Sensodyne Extra Whitening Toothpaste can help you solve both problems.

Like all Sensodyne products, it contains potassium nitrate, which relieves sensitivity by soothing the nerves inside your teeth, allowing you to enjoy your favorite foods while still maintaining your pearly whites.

You shouldn't expect to achieve pearly white teeth overnight, hydrated silica gently scrubs away stains, and it ultimately takes 6-7 weeks to see whitening results.

Product Details:

  • Whitening Ingredients: Hydrogen peroxide, silica

  • Fluoride: Yes

  • Size: 3.2 oz

  • Flavor: mint

#7. Crest Pro-Health Gum and Sensitivity, Gentle Whitening

($10.49 FROM Walmart - Get Up To 4% Cash Back & Save $2.39)

image.png

Our Ratings

  • Effectiveness: 3.5/5

  • Comfort: 4.6/5

  • Taste: 4.6/5

What we like

  • No irritation to teeth or gums

  • Helps relieve sensitivity

  • Mild mint flavor

  • Comfortable and smooth texture

  • ADA approved formula

  • Has a little whitening effect

What we don’t like

  • Not enough relief for extremely sensitive users

  • Some of the more intense teeth-whitening ingredients are omitted, which means you'll see less effective whitening overall

  • Slower and more subtle effect than bleach

  • It may take longer to see noticeable results

Editor's review

There aren’t many top whitening toothpaste options on the market specifically for people with sensitive teeth. However, Crest Pro-Health Gum and Sensitivity does, and in fact, it's the only ADA-approved toothpaste that has both sensitivity relief and whitening properties, which is an anomaly among whitening toothpastes.

The formula goes by route of less aggressive surface stain removers like hydrated silica and stannous fluoride, a known favorable ingredient for sensitive teeth.

People with sensitive teeth should probably avoid whitening toothpastes that contain peroxide, a bleaching agent that can open the pores of tooth enamel and change the color of the tooth from the inside, making it appear whiter.

During testing, we noticed that the whitening effect improved by 1 shade after 4 weeks. That said, since it doesn't contain some of the faster whitening ingredients like peroxide or baking soda, it may not be as effective at whitening as other products.

But it may be more suitable for sensitive people, and long-term use may produce more significant effects.

The toothpaste begins working immediately and provides sensitivity relief at the gumline after three days of use.

Of the whitening toothpastes on this list, it tastes the best we've tried. While most other toothpaste flavors have a strong mint flavor, this one has a subtle mint flavor, which we found to be refreshing. We noticed it also gave off a slight tingling sensation that made our teeth feel sparkling after nearly an hour of brushing. It also boasts a foamy formula sans grittiness.

Product Details:

  • Whitening Ingredients: Stannous fluoride, Hydrated silica

  • Fluoride: Yes

  • Size: 4.1 oz

  • Flavor: Soft mint

Customer Reviews:

Customers like the effect of the toothpaste on their gums. They appreciate the taste and texture of the product, and say it works perfectly.

"I liked the taste, the smell, for a few days of use it removed the sensitivity of the teeth. Very satisfied."
