Nespresso Vertuo Next vs. Plus vs. Vertuo: Differences and Reviews 2024
There’s no bigger name in the capsule coffee market than Nespresso. The brand has two types of machine: the classic Nespresso machines, and its newer Vertuo line.
The beverages from the original machines are espresso-based: ristrettos, espressos and lungos. But the Vertuo line was launched in 2014 to offer more range, especially to the North American market, where coffee is traditionally enjoyed in big mugs.
1. Nespresso VertuoLine
For the first time ever, coffee lovers can experience large-cup coffee with crema. The silky, generous crema is a naturally formed foam of coffee and air. Representing unprecedented quality, it seals aromas in coffee and enhances the tasting pleasure.
A COFFEE SYSTEM FOR THE DIGITAL ERA
The new Nespresso VertuoLine revolutionizes the way that coffee is brewed by introducing Centrifusion™ technology. A world class team of Nespresso engineers and designers have created the most intelligent, elegant and ergonomic system on the market today. The intelligent extraction system provides an extremely high level of precision as the machine recognizes, through barcode technology, each expertly designed Grand Cru and adjusts the extraction parameters to brew each blend in the most optimal way. The result is a new richly aromatic, deeply flavored, crema-topped large-cup coffee (236 ml or 8 oz) or espresso(1.35 ounces).
The new VertuoLine system has been designed to meet the tastes and preferences of the North American consumer, creating an American-style large-cup coffee as well as the authentic European espressos for which the brand is famous.
Users will be able to use 12 types of Nespresso coffee capsules with the VertuoLine, including a vanilla and decaffeinated version, further appealing to U.S. consumers.
EXPERTLY DESIGNED
Available in red, black and chrome, VertuoLine offers a look that is sleek, stylish, and suits any living space.
Given North America’s preference for fresh milk over powdered, the Aeroccino milk frother is also available for purchase with VertuoLine if consumers wish to make premium milk-based beverages such as Lattes or Cappuccinos.
VertuoLine™ is for $299, or the VertuoLine™ bundle with the Aeroccino Plus milk frother can be purchased for $349.
VertuoLine™ will be available for purchase at www.nespresso.com, through the Nespresso Club and at Sur La Table, Bloomingdale's and Macy's.
2. Nespresso VertuoPlus
Nespresso, the worldwide pioneer and reference in premium, single-serve coffee, introduces the new VertuoPlus machine to the Vertuo™ range. Created specifically for the North American coffee enthusiast, the Vertuo™ range launched in 2014 and revolutionized the single-serve coffee industry with the ability to brew both large-cup, high-quality coffee and authentic espresso.
The new effortless technology of VertuoPlus only requires the touch of a single button to open the machine, brew the coffee and eject the capsule ensuring exceptional convenience and flexibility for a seamless in-home coffee experience. With the VertuoPlus, it is one touch to extraordinary taste.
In addition to the updated technology, the VertuoPlus has a rotating water tank to adjust and fit different spaces and an updated look, coming in an assortment of colors for all design aesthetics. Like all Vertuo™ machines, VertuoPlus features Nespresso's innovative Centrifusion™ technology and boasts a special ability to read the barcode on the individual coffee capsule. Using these two technologies, the machine adjusts its brewing parameters so that each Grand Cru is optimally brewed. The result is a richly aromatic, deeply flavored large-cup coffee or espresso topped with a silky and generous crema – a sign of world-class coffee, representing extraordinary quality.
And the smart design of the latest machine goes further; the water tank carries over a litre of water and is removable, preheating takes a maximum of 20 seconds and the machine automatically turns off after nine minutes of inaction to save energy. With the pods being 100 per cent recyclable, sustainability has been a consideration throughout the design process, too.
The Nespresso VertuoPlus machine is available now at select fine retailers, Nespresso Boutiques, Nespresso boutique-in-shops, through the Nespresso Club (1.877.964.6299) and on www.nespresso.com. The VertuoPlus is priced at $199 to $219, depending on the model (Standard or Deluxe). The Standard model is available in Grey, White and Cherry Red and the Deluxe model is available in Black, Silver, and Titan. For those who enjoy their coffee with milk, the VertuoPlus is also sold as a bundle (with the Aeroccino+ milk frother), for $249 to $269 respectively.
3. Nespresso Vertuo Next
The Vertuo Next features a sleek, contemporary design in eight stylish colours including White, Red, Rich Brown, Dark Chrome and Rich Black.

Nespresso’s Vertuo Next, is the new generation of machine with five cup sizes and over 25 blends of sustainably sourced, quality coffee.
The Nespresso Vertuo Next machine is unlike any other thanks to its innovative extraction technology with key features such as its one touch button and capsule recognition.
The extraction technology automatically adapts brewing parameters to each capsule to fit your cup's size and extract the appropriate brew. It also utilises the principles of centrifugal force and fusion, ensuring the beverage is mixed and made evenly. Each cup will come out full-bodied, strong, and intense with a smooth and thick crema that only Nespresso can achieve.
Those who enjoy different types of coffee can now enjoy them at their pleasure at home as the Vertuo Next machine can brew six different serving sizes—carafe pour-over (535ml), alto (414ml), mug (230ml), gran lungo (150ml), double espresso (80ml) and espresso (40ml). In addition, there are 37 different blends and single origins available in Nespresso's Espresso, Long Black, Barista Creations, and Craft Brew collections to further tailor an exceptional coffee experience.
Another innovative feature is the capsule recognition capability, which optimises coffee brewing experience. Each capsule comes with a unique barcode that contains information such as flow and volume of water, temperature, infusion time, and capsule rotation rate for optimal brewing.
To ensure a quality coffee experience with every cup, Vertuo Next machines encompass centrifusion technology: a spinning system to ensure a perfect infusion of coffee – up to 4,000 rotations per minute. This is partnered with Vertuo capsule barcode reading technology that controls five variables: extraction volume, water temperature, water flow, rotation speed, and infusion time.
The Vertuo Next range is the latest step in Nespresso’s commitment to provide sustainable, quality coffee options. All packaging is 100% recyclable and 54% of the machine is made with recycled plastic, making itNespresso’s most sustainable yet. The new Vertuo Next technology means the machine operates on a smaller footprint, with a two-minute auto shut off and 30-second heat up time.
Vertuo Next doesn't compromise on aesthetics either. It is available in a range of four colours and finishes, matte black, cherry red, white, and a premium brown. Coupled with its stylish looks and slim, sleek frame, it is the perfect addition to any kitchen countertop or coffee bar setup—and the ideal coffee companion for any occasion.

5. Comparing The Nespresso Vertuo Next Vs Plus: What’s The Better Option?
Comparing The Nespresso Vertuo Next Vs Plus: What’s The Better Option?
Choosing between the Nespresso Vertuo Next and the Nespresso Vertuo Plus comes down to looking at the most important design features of each machine, and deciding which option is the best fit for your lifestyle and individual needs.
While both the Nespresso Vertuo Next and Nespresso Vertuo Plus are fairly sleek and slim, the Plus is the slightly larger option of the two. It holds two more Vertuo coffee pods compared to the Next, as well as holding three more ounces of water in its reservoir.
The Nespresso Vertuo Plus holds 10 individual coffee pods within the machine, while the Nespresso Vertuo Next holds 8 pods. This allows for 8 to 10 individual servings to be brewed without the need to reload pods into the machine.
This “pre-loaded” pod storage system is a major advantage compared to the majority of other single-serve coffee systems. More simple options, like Keurig coffee brewing machines, need to be loaded before each use, which adds an extra step to each morning’s coffee-making routine.
The manufacturer’s suggested retail pricing for the Nespresso Vertuo Plus is $169, while the suggested price for the Nespresso Vertuo Next is $179.
With the prices of these two Nespresso Vertuo models being fairly similar, choosing the best option for you comes down to weighing which of the features and options are most important to you.
The Nespresso Vertuo Next is by far the more “high tech” option between these two popular Nespresso models, as it features both WiFi and Bluetooth technology that pairs with smartphone apps to offer a variety of features and access to performance data.
The Vertuo Next can brew espresso, double espresso, two larger coffee sizes (5 oz / 150 ml and 8 oz / 235 ml) as well as an 18oz / 530ml carafe for those that need a much longer caffeine fix.
However, the VertuoPlus can only brew individual coffees, which means it can brew espresso and larger coffee sizes, but there’s no way to brew a carafe from the more expensive machine.
However, the Vertuo Next is slightly slower to heat up, taking 30 seconds to reach temperature rather than 20 seconds for the Plus, but actually, this isn’t a big deal.
However, the Next has slightly better eco credentials. The auto shut off kicks in after two minutes rather than nine minutes, which is how long the VertuoPlus takes to turn off automatically, which is a handy way to save energy.
While the Next showcases high-end tech-driven features, the Plus is more simple to use and holds two more pods as well as three extra ounces of water.
The VertuoPlus also trumps the Vertuo Next with its moveable water tank, which can be positioned at the back of the machine or to the left or right. This means it can easily fit into any kitchen set-up, even if you have narrow countertops, or you’re tight on space. Unfortunately, the water tank placement of the Vertuo Next is static.
The fact that the Nespresso Vertuo Plus is often priced around $10 lower compared to the Nespresso Vertuo Next makes the Plus the best option on the market for most customers.
6. Comparing The Nespresso Vertuo Next Vs Vertuo: What’s The Better Option?
Comparing The Nespresso Vertuo Next Vs Vertuo: What’s The Better Option?
There are quite a few differences between the original Vertuo machine and the Next.
The Vertuo Next is more compact, at only 5.5” wide, whereas the Vertuo machine is 8.3” wide. With such a small footprint comes the compromise of water tank capacity, but it isn’t much. The Vertuo Next can hold 37 oz of water, while the Vertuo can hold 40oz. Plus, even with the smaller size, the Vertuo Next can brew an 18 oz carafe of coffee!
The used capsule container on the Vertuo machine can hold 13 large capsules before you’ll need to toss the spent pods. The Vertuo Next, with it’s slightly smaller size, can hold 10 used capsules.
An excellent upgrade within the Vertuo Next model is its Bluetooth Capability. You can connect your machine to the Nespresso App on your smartphone, tablet, or another device.
Through the app, you can monitor many factors of your device. You can see when the machine needs assistance or if the capsule container is full. It’ll even tell you if the water tank needs replenishing or if you’re running out of pods and need to reorder some. Which you can do with the touch of your fingertip.
The Next is a newer model, offers more cup sizes, is more energy efficient, has a smaller footprint and has a quicker warm-up time. Overall, it is the more sophisticated machine but it does have a bulkier design than the original Vertuo.
And in terms of price, the Vertuo Next is the more affordable option making it a no-brainer investment in our opinion.
So, I recommend the Nespresso Vertuo Next over the Vertuo model in almost every case. It is an upgraded and less expensive model than the original Vertuo. Not only is the Vertuo Next more sleek, compact, and available in more finishes, but its manufacturing is also better for the environment.
