Official Price: $69.99

Review: The New Balance 1080 v10 (version 10) came in under the radar at the end of 2019.It is a neutral road running shoe and the premium road trainer of New Balance’s line. This is a significant update from the previous version of the 1080 and NB’s new Fresh Foam X and HYPOKNIT make this feel like a completely different shoe.Because of the max cushion, it likely won’t be your go-to for speedwork, but if you’re in the market for a shoe that can go the distance and serve as your everyday trainer, this is a great choice.

With the all-new Fresh Foam X midsole, the New Balance 1080 v10 offers a luxuriously soft underfoot feel while delivering a springy ride. The new Hypoknit upper gives the shoe a sleek look and a very adaptable fit, and the past model's issues of heel slippage have been addressed with the Ultra Heel design. If you like well-cushioned shoes that don’t feel squishy, you’ll likely appreciate that this shoe offers ample cushioning to support harder slogs.

Since version 10 has been out on the market for a long time and they’re trying to get rid of it, the v10s are on sale and they’re about $70 cheaper.New Balance 1080v11 is at a much higher price than version 10.If you’re looking to save a couple of bucks, get version 10. And because the 1080v11 is more of an iteration rather than a complete revolution from what we saw in version 10, it might not be a bad idea to pick up one more pair of the 1080v10 at a discount if you’ve been loving the 10 already.

Official Price: $79.99

Review: New Balance 1080 v11 and v10 are very similar and the v11 is an iteration and not a complete redesign. The only major difference between the New Balance 1080v10 vs v11 is going to be in the upper. Both shoes have a knit upper called Hyponit. However, the 1080v10 is more stretchy and the 1080v11 is a bit more structured through the toe box.The Ultra Heel on the 1080v11 is a little bit less aggressive than the v10 but still big and very prominent. New Balance seem to have fixed the discomfort some people had in the area where the ankle bone sits. They also updated the look of the midfoot, which maintains the same static mesh band as before but with a subtler look.

A blown rubber outsole adds durability that works in combination with multiple flex grooves to create an flexible ride that can go the distance. If you ran in the v10, then the 1080 v11 will deliver everything you loved from the previous version like protective Fresh Foam X cushioning, a smooth ride that is well suited for daily runs, and durability that can withstand the test of time. Because New Balance didn’t make any major changes, we’re confident anyone who liked the previous version will have the same experience in the 1080v11.

  • New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v12

Official Price: $159.99

Review: The Fresh Foam X 1080v12 represents a consistent progression of the model’s signature qualities. It updates from top to bottom.Featuring a redesigned heel, no-sew overlay upper, and a plush Fresh Foam X midsole, the New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 v12 sees changes that improve upon the versatility and adaptability of the shoe. The smooth transitions of the pinnacle underfoot cushioning experience are fine-tuned with updated midsole mapping, which applies more foam to wider areas of the midsole and increases flexibility at the narrower points. The ultra-modern outlook is also reflected in the 1080’s upper construction. The v12 offers a supportive, second-skin style fit with an engineered Hypoknit upper, for a more streamlined overall design. This adaptable upper also improves the shoe's fit through the midfoot while retaining the roomy toebox of previous iterations. Finally, the plush heel collar is reshaped to fit a wider variety of feet and provide a secure hold.

Given the emphasis on comfort, there is also a higher weight, which positions this shoe to be best used for easy and daily mileage without the desire to pick up the pace. Its geometry sets this premium trainer apart from other premium shoes like the Brooks Glycerin, Mizuno Wave Sky, or Saucony Triumph in terms of who may enjoy this shoe and benefit (or not benefit) most from it.

2. Construction and Materials

  • Upper

New Balance 1080v10 - The 1080 v10’s upper is a masterpiece. The upper is made of a soft, stretchy knit called Hypoknit that is better than both Adidas Primeknit and Nike Flyknit: smoother and thinner. In the toe box area, the material on the upper is very stretchy and pliable and it actually feels very nice. However, from the midfoot cage all the way back, it’s a reinforced fabric type of material that’s a little bit less breathable and a little bit stiffer, which gives the shoe more structure. In version 10, the Hypoknit just under the ankle bone was a bit rigid and there was really no padding there. It’s a regular standard tongue that’s not super thin and not super padded. So, the knit on the tongue is very thin, very flexible, and very breathable. The shoe also features a no-sew construction that eliminates the use of traditional stitching, making it more lightweight and breathable. There is reflective Trace Fibre stitching on the midfoot to provide some lightweight structure. It kind of looks like a volcano.

New Balance 1080v11 - The 1080v11 also features a lightweight mesh upper, but it has been redesigned with a new synthetic material that provides even more breathability and flexibility. On the 1080v11, we have a slightly different design across the top of the forefoot. The Hypoknit in the forefoot is slightly different than the v10 in the sense that it’s a little bit stretchier and I think gives it a little more of a roomier feel. The upper was streamlined and tightened. This was designed to help you feel more locked-in while using the shoe. The Ultra Heel design incorporates an internal heel counter with a soft, stretchy heel collar that molds to your foot. The Ultra heel has a little bit of padding. It’s just nice to touch and it feels good on the heel. Everything about it feels very plush, but it’s not puffy and it’s not heavy. 1080v11 has a redesigned lacing system that wraps around the foot for added lockdown. The 1080v10 has a heel counter for increased support and stability, while the 1080v11 has a more minimal design that does not include a heel counter.

New Balance 1080v12 - The upper on the New Balance 1080v12 is made from the brand’s “Hypoknit” material and it’s stretchy and comfortable across the top of the foot. The breathable Hypoknit upper is soft and offers a focused structure with a flexible forefoot and a reinforced midfoot for precise lockdown. The upper is a good mix of breathable and supportive. The tongue of the 1080v12 is generously padded and has no tongue slide thanks to the tongue being attached on both sides to the midsole of the shoe. The heel is one of the most obvious changes in this edition. While the 1080v11 had a very soft flexible heel collar up by the achilles, this 12th edition of the shoe offers more cushion and structure. The latest version seems to have a lot more room in the toe than previous versions, which I think most people will appreciate. The shoe does feel loose, which may not be optimal if you have very narrow feet.

  • Outsole

New Balance 1080v10 - The 1080  v10 offers a very nice outsole. Using mostly blown rubber, the outsole is very durable and offers a great amount of grip for an everyday trainer. This material paired with strategically-placed flex grooves that help with the flexibility of the sole unit, and help your toes flex on the toe off. This is also where I have one of my main issues with this shoe. The blown rubber used on the outsole is very loud on concrete and asphalt. The 1080v10 has an aggressive tread pattern that provides superior grip on a variety of surfaces.

New Balance 1080v11 - The 1080v11 also features a durable rubber compound, but it has been redesigned to provide even better grip and traction. The outsole of the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 v11 features firm rubber under the heel and softer blown rubber under the forefoot. The goal is to maximize shock absorption, flexibility and grip on roads. Also, flex grooves allow for a more flexible ride.The 1080v11 has a more minimal tread pattern for a smoother ride.

New Balance 1080v12 - The bottom of the 1080v12 is made from blown rubber.Similar to the previous iterations of this shoe, the outsole confirms the 1080v12 is still best-suited to the roads. The lugs aren’t deep or grippy enough to cope with technical trails, but on wet sidewalks and light tracks, there’s definitely enough traction to keep you safe. The 1080v12 has better ground feel and softer landings due to the exposed midsole foam on the outsole.

  • Midsole

New Balance 1080v10 - New Balance overhauled the 1080 when it released the v10. Designers added a Fresh Foam X midsole.Fresh Foam X is basically New Balance’s fancier version of Fresh Foam.Fresh Foam X is a unique midsole compound that adds soft cushioning while reducing weight, resulting in a plush, easy ride.It is lighter and a little bit bouncier than the Fresh Foam that’s in the New Balance Beacon.

New Balance 1080v11 - The New Balance 1080v10 sole unit has been kept for the v11s. The midsole uses Fresh Foam X, a new version of the signature foam by New Balance. It’s lighter with a snappier ride. Also, laser engravings make the midsole more suple to soften the platform. The removable sockliner is by Ortholite and enhances in-shoe feel.

New Balance 1080v12 - The New Balance 1080v12 also uses Fresh Foam X in its midsole which has a good amount of cushioning to feel plush underfoot, yet still enough responsiveness to allow you to pick up the pace should you need it. The tongue is also nicely cushioned. The 1080v12 with its slightly softer midsole is better suited to longer runs. The 1080v12 features more cushioning across wider areas of the midsole as well as increased flexibility. This lends to quicker, smoother transitions to provide that bouncy, energetic feeling we’ve come to expect from the 1080.

3. Fit and Sizing

New Balance 1080v10 - This shoe fits true-to-size and hugs your feet in all the right places. The HypoKnit engineered mesh upper is stretchy and breathable.

New Balance 1080v11 - This shoe fits true-to-size and hugs your feet in all the right places. The HypoKnit engineered mesh upper is stretchy and breathable. This is a huge improvement from last year’s model.New Balance added extra cushion in the Ultra Heel, which helped lock our foot into the shoe.

New Balance 1080v12 - Fit-wise, the 1080v12 comes up big.I wouldn't say that this shoe is a half size large, but for those who sit between two sizes may do better going with your smaller of the two choices. Overall, this shoe delivers a secure, comfortable, and premium-feeling upper.
