These products feature the most advanced nutritional considerations of any Purina line.Purina Pro Plan takes credit for being the first dog food brand to ever incorporate real meat as the first ingredient in their products. About Purina ONE

Source:purina.com

Products in the Purina ONE line use natural ingredients and were the first line of natural pet foods. It was developed in 1986.Purina ONE offers a wide variety of food formulas for dogs, including options for different life stages, breeds, and sensitivities. In addition, their products are generally less expensive than Pro Plan foods, making them a good choice for budget-conscious dog owners.

All of their recipes are made from real meat, which serves as the foundation of their formulas. Not only does this help to increase the protein content of each serving, but it also ensures that your dog is getting all the nutrients they need from a single source. Most of their foods are towards the higher end of the protein spectrum, and you can find many in the 28-30% range. This is ideal, as many dogs have allergies or sensitivities to certain meats and will benefit from having a single protein source in their diet.Purina ONE also boasts a lengthy product list, but it’s not quite as overwhelming as Pro Plan’s. Their foods tend to be more generalized, which can save you some stress, but at the expense of potentially not fully addressing your dog’s issues. Most of their recipes use cheap fillers and animal by-products, same as Pro Plan.

Overall, Purina ONE is a good option for dog owners looking for less expensive food with a broad range of formula options. However, those with dogs with specific health concerns may want to consider a different brand.

ProsCons
  • Real Meat is the primary ingredients.

  • Grandfather of premium pet foods.

  • Usually high in protein.

  • Best for age-specific formulas from puppy to adult, to senior.

  • Sensitive stomach-friendly.

  • Great Value nutrition.

  • Great value.

  • Not as many options as Pro Plan.

  • Some filler carbs.

  • Uses meat by-products.

  • Limited choice of flavors.

  • Uses just as many dodgy ingredients.

About Dog Chow

Source:purina.com

The Dog Chow brand of dog food is also a member of the Purina family. Though the Purina company has been around for many years, the Dog Chow brand was started in 1957.It only took two years after its release for Dog Chow to become one of the leading dog food brands sold in the United States. The product line includes a wide variety of flavors and options for puppies, adult dogs, and senior dogs. Both wet and dry formulas are available. All of Dog Chow recipes are AAFCO approved.

What many people love about the Dog Chow brand is that it is affordable and you can buy it just about anywhere. And it also comes in a variety of bag sizes and several flavors that can appease even the pickiest eaters.Considering the brand has been around for over 70 years without a single recall, it surely deserves at least a cursory glance.

However,Dog Chow  is not one of the better pet food brands on the market.  Many Dog Chow products list low-quality fillers like whole grain corn as the first ingredient and there are few mentions of high-quality proteins, and many of their products also contain artificial additives. The brand as a whole is not at the top of the list when it comes to quality pet food brands for your dog.

ProsCons
  • Foods are nutritionally complete and balanced according to AAFCO standards.

  • Super-affordable.

  • Packed with vitamins and minerals.

  • Enough protein and fat for adult dogs.

  • Dog Chow has never had a product recall.

  • All recipes are free of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.

  • Cheap protein sources, like corn and soy meal.

  • Some recipes list unnamed meat by-products.

  • Excessive carbohydrate content.

  • Artificial colors and flavors in the bag.

  • Non-chelated minerals are harder to absorb.

About Purina Beyond

Source:purina.com

Beyond brand is one of Purina's newer lines of products. This brand was created in response to a rise in demand for all-natural pet food products. Beyond brand is a natural brand of pet food, made with real meat, poultry, or fish as the primary ingredient and supplemented with essential nutrients for balanced nutrition. Beyond states that all of their products are made with quality proteins and that they are free from poultry by-product meals. Beyond dog foods don’t contain any corn, wheat, or soy ingredients and they are free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. All of these things seem to sync up with the brand’s claim of being a natural pet food brand. The Purina Beyond website notes that all products are manufactured and guaranteed by the Nestle Purina Pet Care Company and that the brand owns all of the facilities where their products are manufactured. They do not state specifically where those facilities are located, however. It is also telling that the brand’s product labels don’t carry a “Made in the USA” stamp.

Purina Beyond has a modest product range of dog food recipes. This range is a mix of dry dog food recipes and wet/canned dog food recipes. This dog food brand focuses on all the healthy options you see from the premium food brands like grain-free, no by-products, and limited ingredients. They offer many different flavors and combinations, some of which are more unique than their traditional dog food line. However, Purina Beyond does not produce any age-specific dog food, such as recipes for puppies or senior dogs. Instead, much of their food is rated for all life stages.Lastly, it is worth pointing out that Purina Beyond has some Organic dog food recipes. Organic dog food is extremely uncommon and the fact that a mainstream brand like Purina has entered this space is notable.

ProsCons
  • High-quality natural ingredients.

  • Grain-free, no by-products, and limited ingredients.

  • Added vitamins, minerals & nutrients.

  • Real benefits to support whole health.

  • They offer many different flavors and combinations.

  • Much of their food is rated for all life stages.

  • Affordable.

  • Purina Beyond has never had a product recall.

  • They have accredited veterinary nutritionists on staff.

  • Lower than average protein content.

  • Some recipes contain plant-based protein.

  • Most formulas, including fish and beef recipes, contain large amounts of chicken which can be a problem if you are looking for a non-chicken dog food.
