Price: $110 to $219.09(@Amazon)

The Asics Gel Nimbus 21 is a long-distance trainer that combines a good amount of cushion for the long run with some spring when upping the pace. Although pricey, they use a lot of high-level technology to protect and propel you.

The addition of a new midsole foam—called FlyteFoam Propel—absorbs shock and increases durability and rebound, and a new full-contact outsole makes for a smoother, more stable ride. The design is subtle enough to wear them casually and the build quality makes you think they will last for years. If you under-pronate or supinate, you can fall back on the Guidance Trusstic System technology along the side of the shoe to counter your outward role while the added cushioning in the heel softens rear-foot strikes. The Jacquard upper mesh is breathable and leaves ample amount of space in the toebox, a definite improvement since the last iteration of the Gel Nimbus. The Gel Nimbus 21 doesn't hold your feet, it surrounds it from all angles and supports it in all the key areas. One area it definitely lacks is aesthetics; there isn't much going on visually and most people won't look twice at the Gel Nimbus 21.If you are looking for a comfortable and well-made mid to long distance running shoe, the Nimbus 21 will not disappoint.

The Asics Gel Nimbus 23 is a stable, every day trainer with a squishy underfoot feel that shines during easy paces. There are loads of Gel in this shoe and it drives like a Cadillac—smooth and reliable. Constructed with comfort and breathability in mind, this shoe features a softer engineered mesh design for long runs. Engineered eyelet shaping helps the upper move more naturally with the foot, while a stretchy midfoot panel appropriately hugs the foot to generate better flexibility. Additionally, the shoe's upper is made with recycled materials to reduce waste and carbon emissions.

Providing the runner with excellent shock absorption and softness, the GEL-NIMBUS 23 delivers more compression in the heel thanks to its softer GEL technology cushioning unit and contoured design lines. Also, a gender-specific TRUSSTIC device provides an articulated amount of support in the right direction for men and women to help generate a smooth transition. Under the toe, the inclusion of gender-specific pillars help cushion the body and help runners experience a softer feel. Simultaneously, the OrthoLite X-55 sockliner equips runners with a forgiving, yet responsive stride. The components of the GEL-NIMBUS 23 shoe help increase the softness without forgoing the integrity of the shoe's ride.

In summary, the Asics Gel Nimbus 23 remains true to itself with a traditional, tried-and-tested configuration. It’s an interesting choice to rotate with other lighter and snappier models.

The Asics GEL-Nimbus 24 is the newest model in the Nimbus lineup. Nimbus 24 is now one of the lightest, bounciest max-cushioned trainers on the market and it’s definitely worth upgrading to the Nimbus 24, even if you have the Nimbus 23.

The ASICS Gel-Nimbus 24 is a super soft max cushioned trainer with a versatile ride. The shoe is built for the long haul as it makes you feel like you are running on a cloud.Creating a softer landing in every step, this shoe is also approx. 20g lighter than the previous version. The upper’s soft engineered mesh and flexible midfoot panel make these shoes more comfortable during long runs. By moving seamlessly with your foot, they help your stride feel smoother in every step. The Asics Gel Nimbus 24 essentially takes the well-loved max cushioned shoe designed for going long, and slaps on a lighter upper and cushioning technology that gives it a much softer, bouncier feeling than previous Nimbus shoes.FF BLAST PLUS cushioning keeps the shoe lightweight while providing a softer feeling underfoot. This material also helps increase the shoe's rebound properties at the toe-off stage. Its new Trusstic technology (under the foot arch) prevents the foot from twisting as you step, which is good news for overpronators.

If you’re looking to conquer your first 5k, train for longer distances or just have fun with running, this trainer offers comfort, cushioning and support.

2.Construction and Material

  • Outsole

Asics Gel Nimbus 21 - On the outsole, they have placed high levels of ASICS High-Abrasion Rubber (AHAR) to boost durability, which gave great traction on all surfaces.

Asics Gel Nimbus 22 - The outsole of the Nimbus 22 is made of AHAR rubber. The tread on the ASICS Gel Nimbus 22 provided great traction on wet, icy and snowy roads.

Asics Gel Nimbus 23 - On the outsole, there are two types of rubbers on the Nimbus 23: AHAR on the forefoot and most of the rearfoot with more durable AHAR+ on just the tip of the heel.It has lots of flex, allowing the shoe to bend with your foot. The Nimbus 23 would have been much more durable had the entire outsole been covered with AHAR+ like on the Asics Novablast.

Asics Gel Nimbus 24 - Looking at the outsole, there's not a lot that's changed in the Asics Gel Nimbus 24 from the Asics Gel Nimbus 23 so it's still the same configuration regarding the amount of flex grooves on offer through the forefoot, and the same configuration regarding the positioning of that outsole in the back half underneath your heel for heel strikers. There’s relatively little rubber on the outsole of the Nimbus 24 for a daily trainer. It has AHAR+ on the heel and softer AHAR on the forefoot.

Probably the biggest change with regards to the outsole has been the removal of the medial Trusstic device on the Asics Gel Nimbus 23. The Trusstic system has been changed to a floating plastic shank situated in the middle of the midsole instead of on the outsole.

  • Midsole

Asics Gel Nimbus 21 - In this version they have used their signature Gel Cushioning System in the heel and along the outside of the forefoot to help absorb shock on your impact. However, these Gel systems have been cut back from previous models. They were cut back because of the use of the new Flytefoam Lyte material in the midsole and the Flytefoam Propel material in the topsole. As always, Nimbus 21 included their Guidance Trusstic System — a lightweight support system that helps push your foot through neutral pronation.

Asics Gel Nimbus 22 - The ASICS Gel Nimbus 22 offers gel cushioning that truly enhances the absorption of shock which will in the end make running more comfortable. The flytefoam (which runs the length of the midsole) in addition to the gel cushioning offers responsiveness as well as flexibility.Underneath the arch is the Trusstic technology, which is a thermoplastic piece underneath the midfoot to provide stability.

Asics Gel Nimbus 23 - It’s still a dual foam setup with Flytefoam (which is EVA) being the main component. In the rearfoot, on top of the Flytefoam is Flytefoam Propel which is an EVA-TPU blend. The FlyteFoam midsole uses a lightweight and bouncy foam compound that absorbs shocks on the road and optimizes the energy return for a comfortable and peppy ride. It combines a unique elastomer to super organic nanofibers to be more robust and last hundreds of kilometers.

Asics Gel Nimbus 24 - The Nimbus 24 has a dual-density midsole setup. There’s firmer Flytefoam on the top, in the heel and forefoot with FF Blast+ on the bottom layer, throughout the length of the shoe. This setup makes the heel and midfoot slightly firmer than the forefoot and it also makes heel and midfoot landings more stable. The only negative aspect of the super soft FF Blast+ is that it’s brittle. The shoe is also designed with TRUSSTIC technology, a thermoplastic material that can be found under the arch of the shoe. The plastic material is there to increase stability on the medial side and offer support to the midfoot.

  • Upper

Asics Gel Nimbus 21 - By using 3D-Printed Overlays, the upper is seamless and still supportive. Inside the boot is an Ortholite X-40 Sockliner that is soft and helps wick moisture away from the foot.ASICS produced an upper that finally fits true to size. It is narrow at the heel, locking it in place, but widens at the midfoot and widens further still to a comfortable — not roomy — toebox.

Asics Gel Nimbus 22 - The upper of the Nimbus 22 is a double-layered upper, with the top layer being a bit like a plastic mesh. It isn’t very soft, and you also notice it while wearing the shoe. The upper material is lightweight and very breathable.

Asics Gel Nimbus 23 - The upper is now breathable AND sustainable. It’s made of 20% recyclable materials.his new mesh is also more durable than before. It uses some recycled materials to make the shoe more sustainable by reducing its carbon footprint. The reflective materials provide a 360 degree visibility so that runners can stay safe from traffic at all time while running. The biggest difference between the Nimbus 23 upper and other Asics premium uppers is that the Nimbus 23’s tongue is attached to an inner sleeve so that NO tongue slide occurs.

Asics Gel Nimbus 24 - The shoe now features an engineered jacquard mesh that is more breathable than the previous knit used on the 23. The mesh tends to flex well, which gives you more room in the toebox for later on in your runs.On the Nimbus 24, the big change is the tongue. A super thin, stretchy, knitted tongue has replaced the normal thick, padded tongue. The thin tongue of the Nimbus 24 makes it a cooler shoe because it lets more air into the vamp of the shoe so this Nimbus might not be suitable for freezing cold temperatures.

Conclusion: Which is Best for You?

Gel Nimbus have improved each year from the 21th edition. These kicks have a handful of great features that any runner could love, especially in the realm of cushion and padding. In essence, the Nimbus 24 is a lighter and more responsive version of the Nimbus 23. It should satisfy the needs of almost all runners that need a max cushioned trainer, but still want a lively and reasonably fast ride. For the runners that have been searching for something lighter and softer, the Asics Gel Nimbus 24 is going to play right in to your needs and requirements. With that being said, if you can find the Gel-Nimbus 23 on special, you should find it extremely comfortable and very well suited to long distance running.

The Asics Nimbus 21does improve its upper fit and feel over the 20. Despite the significant midsole update, the ride quality is still average. Redesigned for better performance and luxurious comfort, the ASICS Gel Nimbus 22 features updates that make it a far more comfortable, breathable, flexible ride. Long time fans will appreciate that the Nimbus 22 has been modernized without changing its function or purpose. While it is priced on the higher side, it’s still kind of a steal when compared against other premium running sneakers. This makes it a truly great value for money pair.
