2024 Best Sunless Tanner: Jergens vs. L'Oreal vs. Neutrogena vs. St.Tropez?

    • "Using self-tanning products at home decreases your exposure to premature aging, sunburn, and skin cancer caused by the sun and tanning beds," says celebrity esthetician and dermatological nurse Natalie Aguilar. But there are literally hundreds of self tanning products out there… all claiming to be the best. They come in the form of lotions, gels, creams, mousses, milks, drops, and sprays. So, how do you figure out which one is the best for you? Here, four cult favorites of self-tanners in the market are Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun Mousse, L'oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Water Mousse, Neutrogena Micromist Airbrush Sunless Tanning Spray, and St. Tropez Luxe Tan Tonic Glow Drops. Formula: The proprietary Advanced Color Complex works with your unique skin tone to mimic the same color results you'd get from natural sun, with no orange hues. Color develops instantly and continues to deepen for several hours after application, peaking at 24 hours and lasting for days.

Shades: Available in Light Bronze and Deep Bronze shades to provide a natural-looking option in an instant for every skin tone.

Shades: Available in Light Bronze and Deep Bronze shades to provide a natural-looking option in an instant for every skin tone.

Fragrance: You can choose the unscented version. It does not stink like most self tanners do.

Application: Application is pretty simple, as long as you use a tanning mitt. The tanning mitt helps you keep your palms clean, and it also helps contain the product so it doesn't get all over the place.

Drying Time: It says it dries in 60 seconds, which is definitely not true. There is a slightly tacky feeling immediately after application and it takes a few minutes to dry completely.

How Long It Lasts: This is an "instant tan" so it gives you color almost instantaneously. It will fade after about the third day especially if you discontinue using.

Review: Many people with deeper skin tones say self-tanning can help cover dark marks or body-acne scar. So if you're looking for blurring or coverage, it is recommended that you apply the mousse several times over the course of several days to build up the tan.

Key Ingredients:

- coconut water and Vitamin E hydrates for softer, smoother skin.

Formula: The proprietary Advanced Color Complex works with your unique skin tone to mimic the same color results you'd get from natural sun, with no orange hues. Color develops instantly and continues to deepen for several hours after application, peaking at 24 hours and lasting for days.

Shades: This is another mousse with no color guide; these seem to be all the rage right now.  So it looks like water in the bottle.  When you pump it out, it turns white.

Fragrance: The smell is great during application, smells like coconuts. Smooth coconut smell which disappears after skin gets dry.

Application: Application is pretty simple, as long as you use a tanning mitt. The tanning mitt helps you keep your palms clean, and it also helps contain the product so it doesn't get all over the place.

Drying Time: It dries quickly, so you can put clothes on within 15 minutes and go into bed without worrying it'll stain your sheets. Allow 4-8 hours for the color to fully develop before showering. For a longer-lasting tan, apply three times over 12 to 24 hours.

How Long It Lasts: It can last about 2-3 days. If you want a longer-lasting tan, it’s recommended to apply it up to three times over the course of 12 to 24 hours.

Review: Some reviews say it's too light and that's only if you do a moderate coat. If you use more pumps, you will definitely get a darker colour. Still, this is probably best for fair-skinned people who want a solid tan but not super dark. It scrubs off pretty well so you don't have to live with patches as it fades.

Key Ingredients:

- Hazelnut is a natural ingredient known for its skin-soothing properties , and is also non-comedogenic so it won't clog pores.

Formula: This gradual indoor tanning spray delivers an ultra-fine mist that applies like a professional airbrush spray to create a tan two shades darker than your skin tone. Designed for easy hands-free application, the self-tanning mist applies lightly and evenly, and dries in less than five minutes with no rubbing required. The one-touch continuous sunless tanning spray works at any angle, so you can cover hard-to-reach places, including your back.

Shades: The product is available in two different tints: Deep (3 shades darker than your skin tone ) and Medium (2 shades darker than your skin tone).

Fragrance: The smell of the formula is very similar to sunscreen. In fact, the smell of Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is overpowered any other odor, and it's an ingredient in self-tanning agents that creates a bronzed look.

Application: Use in a well ventilated area. Hold the spray at least 6-inches away from your body and sweep evenly across the desired area to tan, keeping the can in constant motion. Stop spraying at the end of each stroke to avoid over application. If bending and reaching while spraying isn't hard enough, this product also sprays clear! It is very difficult to judge the evenness of the application. Since it will float around in the air, if you want to try this, it is recommended to put something on the floor or an open space outdoors.

How Long It Works: It only takes about 5 minutes to dry and you start to see results within 4-6 hours sometimes less.

How Long It Lasts: It holds very well after your base is done you only need to use it like 2-3 a week. Even if your in the water " pool, lake, or even the ocean" it maintaines it's self well.

Review: Because it is spray, you do not have to get it on your hands and worry about getting it washed off well. However, it is a little trickier to spray it on evenly so that you do not have streaks, and there is still the issue near the hands of where to stop spraying so that you do not have a weird cut-off line.

Some reviews says the color after application would be a bit fake, and the Oompa Loompa orange color would appear. So finding the right self tanner is a trial and error process. Some are streaky and blotchy. Some are a very unnatural color. Some are too dark or too light or just don't match. You probably have to try several products before you find the one that is best for your skin type and tone.

Key Ingredients:

- Niacinamide: Smooths the look of fine lines, reduces the look of redness, and visibly evens skin tone.

- Vitamin E and Echinacea: Help protect from environmental damage, soothe skin, and reduce the look of redness.

- Dual Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid: Hydrates and visibly plumps skin.

Formula: Infused with 100% natural tanning active, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, Echinacea and Acerola Cherry extract rich in Vitamins C & E to help plump, protect, smooth fine lines, reduce redness and give a natural sunkissed glow.

Shades: Customize your glow; the more drops you apply, the deeper the glow.

2 = Light; 4 = Medium golden tan; 6 = Deep bronze; Neat = Deepest darkest glow

Fragrance: Smells great, not overpowering and you have so much control when adding a few drops to your moisturizer.

Application: It can be slightly drying - even when used with moisturiser. My suggestion, for mature skins, is to ramp up the moisturiser so that you achieve a luminous, even tan and the colour depth wont be overwhelming. The drops can also be applied directly to the skin for a more intense tan.

How Long It Works: The colour started developing within a couple of hours and was fully developed within 4 hours. You also don't need to shower it off if you want a deeper color, leaving it on for 12 hours.

How Long It Lasts: It usually lasts about 3-7 days, and everyone's experience will vary. The colour is nice and not overly orange as some tans can be and it fades away naturally without patches.

Price: St. Tropez Luxe Tan Tonic Glow Drops are $34.99 - $42.00 per bottle, which seems a little expensive but you only need a few drops so will last a long time.

Review: The feeling of the drops is so smooth, and a very small amount goes a long way. There is a slightly tacky touch to the skin for a while but it sinks in eventually. This is the perfect product for tanning the face as it is not drying and did not cause me any irritation or breakouts. You can choose to use it alone or mix it in your face creams or lotions. Lots of people love how customizable it is!
