Bosch vs. KitchenAid Refrigerator: Which is the Better Brand Option?

Bosch vs. KitchenAid Refrigerator: Which is the Better Brand Option?

The best Bosch refrigerators and the best KitchenAid refrigerators always make it difficult to choose. What is an affordable luxury brand? The good news is, you no longer need to break the bank to own attractive and functional appliances. The affordable luxury appliance market spans the gap between your basic four-piece kitchen package and ultra-high-end professional-style products.

1. What are affordable luxury refrigerator brands?

Everyone wants a home that looks luxurious without breaking the bank. Affordable luxury is far cheaper than luxury appliances. The average price for an affordable luxury kitchen is $7,000 to $12,000, while the luxury kitchen is $30,000 and up.

So what do you do if you want a high-end refrigerator but can't handle the price tag? We recommend choosing affordable luxury brands — two of the most popular are Bosch and KitchenAid — and you'll get great looks and features at a lower price, like a counter-depth French door refrigerator.

1.1. Why choose a Bosch refrigerator?

Bosch has long been considered one of the most affordable luxury brands. They are part of the BSH Corporation along with Thermador and Gaggenau.

As a global brand, Bosch manufactures home appliances designed to be more efficient and sustainable.

You'll notice the amazing way the appliance sits flush with the countertop. While this may not seem like a feat, it's something that many brands have been unable to achieve.

Their refrigerators are popular and have two compressors. They put stainless steel on the back of the fridge because it absorbs cold better. Their HomeConnect Wi-Fi system is probably the easiest to use and best in the industry.

You might not get as many convenience features, but for the price, you might consider it a win.

Bosch appliances have been rated one of the most reliable brands on the market due to their reliable designs and customer-friendly warranty plans. Also, Bosch home appliances have been voted “America’s Most Trusted Kitchen Brand” from 2019 to 2025 by Lifestory Research.

1.2. Why choose a KitchenAid refrigerator?

As a brand known for its wide selection of products for home cooks, KitchenAid sells appliances at nearly every price point.

If you're looking for a refrigerator that fits the depth of your counter without compromising on efficient storage and great looks, it's a solid brand to choose.

The 100-plus year old American company's appliances are famous for their good looks, affordability, and of course, bright colors.

As one of the most reliable appliance brands in general, you can also count on its track record of low appliance service needs.

However, their refrigerators are rarely replaced, and most have single evaporators  instead of dual evaporators for better temperature management like the other brands.

Many brands such as Bosch, GE, LG, and Samsung have Wi-Fi enabled appliances. KitchenAid's appliances are fairly basic now, but their features are evolving. Pretty soon, smart capabilities will be a feature to consider.

Basically, a KitchenAid refrigerator gives you a high end appearance at a friendlier price tag—and that might be exactly what you’re looking for.

2. Bosch vs KitchenAid refrigerators: Which should you choose?

2.1. Bosch vs KitchenAid refrigerators: Cooling performance

Almost every refrigerator that qualifies will perform well, it's just that some refrigerators may be better at keeping food fresher and longer.

For customers, aside from cases where the cooling system is clearly defective or damaged, there are few criticisms of refrigerators for not doing a good job of keeping food fresh.

When people complain, it's usually because the temperature is not uniform throughout the freezer: for example, parts of the door are too hot for the milk, or the top or bottom of the freezer gets so cold that the lettuce freezes and turns into a disgusting mush. This only happens on some refrigerators, even though they work fine. This problem seems to be more common in lower-cost top-of-the-line freezer models, while higher-end models with door-to-door capabilities may struggle to maintain dairy-safe temperatures on their door racks.

Bosch

Dual compressors and dual evaporators preserve food better

With the new range of refrigerators, Bosch has created the perfect environment for preserving food. Thanks to its dual compressor and dual evaporator configuration, Bosch refrigerators allow you to independently control the temperature and humidity of the refrigerator and freezer compartments. The result is the ideal environment to keep you fresher and longer.

Bosch is the only manufacturer to offer dual compressors and dual evaporators in freestanding refrigerators, a feature usually found only in high-end built-in models, such as Sub-Zero built in refrigerators that cost two to three times the price.

This adds longer-lasting freshness to your food, whether stored in the freezer or in the refrigerator.

KitchenAid

High end KitchenAid refrigerators have dual evaporators to cool the refrigerator and freezer separately. This improves the temperature and humidity control in both compartments and helps prevent freezer burn.

2.2. Bosch vs KitchenAid refrigerators: special features

2.2.1 What are the special features of Bosch refrigerators?

FarmFresh® System

The all-new Bosch Fresh by Design™ collection features its FarmFresh® System which aims to keep food fresh for up to three times longer while reducing food waste.

Bosch's 4-part FarmFresh system, which is designed from the bottom up, also helps keep food fresher longer than ever before, helping you limit food waste and make fewer trips to the grocery store.

VitaFreshPro™ is the industry's first automatic temperature and humidity control drawer, helping to take the guesswork out of food storage via pre-programmed freshness settings. FreshProtect™ reduces food waste via its Ethylene filter by slowing down the ripening process so produce stayer fresher for longer. AirFresh® Filter works together with MultiAirFlow™ to create a continuous, consistent cool environment while keeping odours away.

EcoMode: Choose this setting to adjust your fridge’s climate to the most economically-friendly temperature to save you money on your monthly bills.

SuperCool

Looking to chill a large amount of food, or quickly chill some drinks before a party? Turn on the SuperCool settings to temporarily set the refrigerator temperature to 34 degrees Fahrenheit and return to normal after two hours.

SuperFreeze

The refrigerator has its own SuperFreeze function. It reduces the temperature of the refrigerator to -8 degrees Fahrenheit for six hours, then returns to standard temperature. This is great for quick freezing food or returning items to the proper freezing level after returning from the grocery store.

MultiAirFlow

Air Circulation Consistency with MultiAirFlow™.
With MultiAirFlow™, evenly circulate cool, fresh air to maintain consistent temperatures throughout the entire fridge cavity, from door bins to back corners.

With the MultiAirFlow feature of Bosch refrigerators, you can expect a temperature deviation of 1 degree Fahrenheit or less. This is thanks to dual compressors and a well-designed temperature management system.

This reduced deviation is valuable because it helps ensure protection against bacterial growth at higher temperatures and freezing or freezer burn at lower temperatures.

HomeConnect

Master your day with Home Connect™
The Home Connect™ app allows you to remotely monitor and control your Bosch refrigerator from your smartphone or tablet. Control the temperature, adjust lighting, run diagnostics, for ultimate convenience. Connected refrigerators from Bosch are designed to give you peace of mind, customization, and simplification.

Your friendly fridge reminder.
Accidentally leaving your fridge open is not only annoying, but very costly. Home Connect helps you avoid unnecessarily high energy bills and spoiling the contents of your fridge. If you wish, push notifications can be sent from your fridge directly to your mobile device, conveniently letting you know if the fridge door has been left open. Finally, a fridge that looks after both you and your food perfectly.

Bosch appliances have a feature called Home Connect that has won this year’s Connected Home Company of the Year Award by IoT Breakthrough. If you’re looking to dive into the modern era and want all your Bosch appliances to coexist together on your mobile device, Bosch Home Connect is a great way to do so. In addition to your smart device, Home Connect is compatible with Fitbits, Apple Watches, and Google Wear or Android watch platforms.

Adjustable FlexBar

Refrigerator and freezer organization is key to food preservation. This new collection takes the guesswork out of the food preservation process and helps maximize freshness by making it easier to see, organize and store items to ultimately prevent them from becoming lost or buried. From the FlexBar™, which provides a first-of-its-kind solution to utilize unused space in the upper refrigerator cavity, to Full-Width Chiller Drawers, Gallon Door Bins and Upscale Shelving and Lighting Systems, the new freestanding French Door Bottom Mount units are designed to fit every lifestyle.

Easy-to-Adjust Half-Width Shelves

Half-width shelves in Bosch refrigerators are included so that you have the flexibility to configure your refrigerator any way you like. For example, families with young children may have two or three gallons of milk on hand at any given time. Using half-width shelves in a custom arrangement can give you exactly the space you need for your storage requirements.

2.2.2 What are the special features of KitchenAid refrigerators?

EverFresh temperature management: This sensor based system, available on some models, keeps your fridge and freezer properly cold.

ExtendFresh temperature management: This sensor based system detects when either the fridge or freezer gets above the correct temperature and triggers the compressor to activate a fan to quickly cool that compartment.

ExtendFresh™ Temperature Management System
Separately monitors the temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer through a sensor located in each, to help ensure fresh fruit juices don't become frozen and prawns avoid freezer burn.

FreshChill pantry drawer: Available on some KitchenAid fridges, this deli/snack drawer has independent temperature settings to keep the foods at the right preset temperature.

FreshChill™ Temperature-Controlled Full-Width Pantry
Provides a manual temperature setting that lets you maintain the freshness of ingredients as varied as a whole salmon or large eggplants. It gives you total control over of the amount of cool air that enters the drawer.

Max Cool: A setting that quickly chills items you’ve just brought home from the store, like meats, drinks, or ice cream.

Max Cool
When selected, automatically adjusts the temperature in the refrigerator and freezer to the lowest setting as needed. This helps keep the refrigerator at the ideal temperature even when you have the doors open for an extended period in order to load all your freshly purchased produce.

Preserva® Food Care System

You can find the Preserva® Food Care System and the Produce Preserver in select KitchenAid® refrigerator configurations.

The Preserva® Food Care System brings the benefits of dual evaporators to our most popular freestanding refrigerator configurations. Whether your customers want the unprecedented flexibility of a 5-door refrigerator, the stylish appeal of our French door refrigerators or the classic convenience of a side-by-side refrigerator, this innovative technology helps fresh and frozen food retain their fresh-picked flavor and texture.

Its two independent cooling systems help keep food fresh while the FreshFlow™ Air Filter minimizes odors, and the Produce Preserver delays over-ripening based on commonly purchased produce.

KitchenAid refrigerators also use activated carbon to absorb smells.

2.3. Bosch vs KitchenAid refrigerators: convenience

Bosch

Hidden Water Dispenser

A number of exterior features are situated within the interior cavity, including the Interior Water Dispenser, new UltraClarityPro™ Water Filter and Interior Ice Maker, for a sleek exterior.

All-new QuickIce Pro System™, with the industry’s fastest refrigerator ice maker.
The innovative QuickIce Pro System™ combines three technologies to produce fast freshly filtered ice in your refrigerator. 1. Industry's fastest refrigerator ice maker. 2. Fresh filtered ice & water with UltraClarityPro®. 3. Hands-free with bottle fill.

Ice makers are the number-one reason for service calls to any refrigerator manufacturer, as they involve mechanical moving parts that tend to get stuck, jammed, or broken. But Bosch has seen a dramatic drop in service calls in the two years since it upgraded its ice makers, suggesting that it has created a design that’s less prone to issues than other brands.

Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel

Anti-Fingerprint
Stainless steel fronts with anti-fingerprint coating are permanently surface-sealed by means of a special final treatment. This protective coating makes fingerprints much more difficult to see; the surface stays clean longer, is much more scratch-resistant and is easier to clean.

True counter-depth for a built-in look.
Sits flush with the countertop, with hidden hinges and discreet, tucked away feet. Sleek, freestanding stainless-steel refrigerators effortlessly look and feel built-in.

KitchenAid

Water and ice maker: Some KitchenAid refrigerators have an in-door icemaker that takes up much less real estate in your refrigerator. We also like that some have an internal water dispenser, since this looks much more modern than an external one. The Measured Water Fill option is also a cool convenience. It lets you set the exact amount you want to come out of the dispenser—nice for when you’re cooking and need exactly half a cup.

Shelving: Look for adjustable glass shelves with a spill resistant coating. Some KitchenAid refrigerators have them.

PrintShield™ Finish
Resists smudges and fingerprints. The specialized coating for stainless steel is easy to clean with just water and a soft cloth, so you can spend more time cooking and less time cleaning up.

BUILT-IN REFRIGERATORS: CUSTOM DESIGN

Many built-in refrigerators can match the finish and style of surrounding cabinets with a panel-ready design and reduced depth that aligns with cabinetry. This look offers more creative possibilities with the opportunity to customize the exterior look of the refrigerator. It also enables seamless integration into surrounding cabinets. Built-in refrigerators are often wider than standard models to make up for space lost in depth, measuring up to around 48 inches wide. They are usually available in bottom-freezer, side-by-side and french door models. Keep in mind that professional installation is usually recommended for these high-end refrigerators that may require custom cabinetry.

2.4. Bosch vs KitchenAid refrigerators: design

High End Aesthetic

Many KitchenAid refrigerators have fancy finishes, like chrome frames, shiny KitchenAid brand nameplates, and satin textured, bar shaped exterior door handles.

2.5. Bosch vs KitchenAid refrigerators: reliability

Based on my interviews with appliance service professionals, Yale’s annual reliability report, and consumer reviews, GE, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and Bosch are the most reliable refrigerator brands right now.

Bosch

Bosch was founded over 135 years ago in Stuttgart, Germany, by industrialist Robert Bosch. For Bosch, customer relationships were paramount; making money was secondary.

Today, the global company maintains the innovative spirit of its founder. It manufactures a variety of appliances, such as refrigerators, dishwashers, washers, dryers, and ranges. The company also makes kitchen electrics like coffee machines and food processors.

Recent Yale annual reports show that Bosch counter-depth refrigerators have a relatively low service rate. In 2020, the service rate was 16.9%, and in 2021 it was 14.9%.

The service professionals I polled rated Bosch as a top brand.

In the marketplace, the praise for Bosch refrigerators is echoed:

  • Designer Appliances called the Bosch B36CL80ENS the best for temperature control, as it uses two air compressors to separate airflow to the fridge and freezer.

  • In 2020, Bosch was named one of the most reliable refrigerators by Puls. Whirlpool took the top spot, followed by Maytag.

  • Reviewed.com described the Bosch B36CD50SNS as an editor’s choice pick, delivering near-perfect performance in terms of temperature control in the fridge and freezer.

Consumers are also enamored with Bosch refrigerators. They have highly-rated reviews on HomeDepot.com, BestBuy.com, and Lowes.com.

The overall sentiment is that Bosch refrigerators are stylish and have innovative design features. Yet, the temperature regulation is not always spot on, the panels are easy to dent, and interior spacing could be better.

KitchenAid

KitchenAid launched in 1919 and was acquired by Whirlpool in 1986. While its most famous product is the KitchenAid stand mixer, the brand makes appliances like refrigerators and ranges and a variety of countertop electrics.

Yale Appliance lists KitchenAid as a top-10 reliable appliance in its 2021 annual report. The service rate in 2020 was 21.6% and went down to 17% in 2021. Yale Appliance refers to KitchenAid as a stylish and affordable luxury brand.

Several service professionals I spoke to said KitchenAid is an excellent, reliable refrigerator brand.

The brand also gets praised by the following outlets:

  • CNET polled repair professionals in an article about reliable appliance brands. KitchenAid was the second most recommended; Whirlpool was number one.

  • The Spruce listed KitchenAid as one of the top nine refrigerator brands. Reviewers called the refrigerators “striking” with high performance and durable features.

Verified purchasers on HomeDepot.com and BestBuy.com love the style of KitchenAid refrigerators. However, some point out quality issues with the ice maker and cooling system.

Another con is the water filter placement on some models. It’s near the floor, making it inconvenient to change and easy to bump when mopping.

2.6. Bosch vs KitchenAid refrigerators: price

Bosch refrigerator prices

Bosch provides customers with unmatched, modern designs for a French door, side-by-side, and bottom freezer refrigerators styles. Bosch refrigerators showcase three main collections: the Bosch 800 Series, which are top-tier models; the Bosch 500 Series, that are a great middle ground for buyers; and the Bosch 300 Series, which is built for convenience.

KitchenAid refrigerator prices

Because KitchenAid offers such a wide variety of kitchen appliances and refrigerators, prices vary significantly between models.

Inexpensive: KitchenAid refrigerators start between $1,800 and $2,500. Their base models are freezer-bottom refrigerators with a capacity of 19 cubic feet. They still have features like temperature-management systems, humidity control, and a produce preserver. Some side-by-side models with water dispensers can also be found at these prices.

Mid-range: French door models with or without a water/ice dispenser run between $2,500 to $5,000. Automatic ice makers, tiered drawer systems, improved temperature-control systems, and LED lighting set these models apart. Drawer refrigerators and compact custom built-ins can also be found in this price range.

Expensive: For $5,000 to $7,500, you’re looking at built-ins with a 25-cubic-foot capacity. The custom paneling of these models creates a seamless look. On the inside, they have the same features as lower-priced models. For more than $7,500, you’ll find the largest capacity side-by-side built-ins in either stainless steel or black stainless steel or with custom paneling.

At the upper price points, we think it makes sense to consider brands with superior technology and more choices, like the Sub Zero fridge which is the gold standard. Also consider the Thermador refrigerator if you are looking for attractive high-end appliance package deals.

KitchenAid offers free delivery on orders of $399 or more and limited-time specials, such as a 10% discount on your entire purchase when you buy two appliances or more at full price. KitchenAid also offers home delivery and professional installation. Some other costs to consider when purchasing a KitchenAid refrigerator include:

  • Delivery for products under $399: $59

  • Uninstall services: $20

  • Haul-away services: $20

  • Standard shipping for major appliance parts and accessories: free

  • Deliveries to the third floor or higher: no charge

Consumers looking to save money on appliances can take advantage of KitchenAid promotions, rebates and discounts directly on its website.

Reasons You Might Not Love a KitchenAid Refrigerator

Value for Money

There’s not much technology separating KitchenAid refrigerators from their Whirlpool cousins, but in general you’ll pay more for a KitchenAid refrigerator. Whirlpool fridges have Wi-Fi, while KitchenAids don’t. Compared with other built in refrigerators, KitchenAid models have a white plastic or “platinum colored” interior, not stainless steel.

No KitchenAid Colors

KitchenAid recently introduced a line of commercial-style ranges in a rainbow of colors to match its beloved stand mixers. People went nuts. If you want a range to match your mixer, it follows that you might want a refrigerator and dishwasher in that color too, right? But so far, the company hasn’t followed through—it offers only classic and black stainless steel and panel ready refrigerators. When and if they do launch colorful fridges, we’ll let you know.

No Wi-Fi

Those bright, commercial-style ranges? They have Wi-Fi. But no KitchenAid refrigerators do. That’s another reason its refrigerators seem to be lagging behind.

Common Customer Complaints on KitchenAid Refrigerators

Look around online, and you’ll see that many KitchenAid customers say they’re happy with their refrigerator and give it four star reviews. However, others cite issues with the icemaker, door alignment, leaks, icing up, lights or the light control board not working and needing to be changed, and noise, along with poor service and long repair times.

We saw an overlap among customer complaints about:

  • Rusting

  • Rubber door gaskets wearing out fast, leading to loss of cold air and temperature, and increasing electricity usage

  • Use of a lot of plastic instead of stainless steel (which is more durable)

  • Poor service record

  • No smart features or Wi-Fi connectivity
After all, whether you buy a reasonably priced model or a high end machine, you want it to work and not give you cause for complaint or expensive repairs.

KitchenAid Refrigerators

The next brand on our list to consider avoiding when shopping for your next refrigerator or freezer model is KitchenAid. The company makes counter-depth, side by side, bottom freezer, and French door refrigerator models.  As with Viking, costs can be expensive. For example, the brand’s 2.4 Cubic Ft. Built-In French Door Refrigerator in Stainless Steel is listed on Home Depot at well over $9,000.

On Consumer Affairs, this refrigerator company has received a little under 4 out of 5 stars. Although that is not a bad rating overall, we have seen complaints about their appliances on other sites as well.

Complaints have concerned issues with features such as ice makers, doors, and lights. You do not want to invest in a refrigerator from this brand only to find yourself struggling with a fridge, freezer drawer or door that will not align, or a noisy water dispenser.

Much of the content of bad reviews of refrigerators from KitchenAid focuses on long wait times for repairs. So, some of the issues are similar to those that buyers have faced when dealing with Viking.

2.7. Bosch vs KitchenAid refrigerators: Warranty

The KitchenAid Warranty

KitchenAid offers a pretty standard one-year warranty on most of its fridges, but you get a two-year warranty on built in refrigerators. You can also get up to a 6 year sealed system warranty with parts and labor (covering things like the compressor, evaporator, condenser, connecting tubing), and a longer warranty is definitely a positive.

KitchenAid also provides a FIT System Limited Guarantee. If your built in refrigerator doesn’t for properly, it’ll give you $300 toward professional help in adjusting the existing cabinets.

The Bosch Warranty

1-year full warranty, 2 years on non-electronic components, 5 years on electronic components, lifetime coverage against rust-through on stainless steel

This Bosch refrigerator choice has a certified ENERGY STAR rating, which means your bills will reduce to only 10 cents a day, saving you roughly $160 in annual bills. But this Bosch appliance also features anti-fingerprint stainless steel, so smudges are nearly non-existent.

What We Like

  • Brand leader across all kitchen products

  • Extra-tall models available

  • 5-door model suited for home chefs

What We Don't Like

  • Higher price points

KitchenAid is known for its mid-century, heavy-duty mixers, but the brand also makes top-of-the-line refrigerators. The brand, known as the luxury end of Whirlpool's appliances, has been offering virtually everything that you could need in a kitchen for years. All the standard configurations, like French doors, side-by-side, top-freezer, and bottom-freezer, are available through KitchenAid. However, their counter-depth model with extra-tall storage is a stand-out on their roster. KitchenAid refrigerators typically offer high-performing, long-lasting features that will complement any kitchen, though you may run into some reliability and quality issues from time to time. Notably, some of the refrigerators can be customized so they're "hidden" within your cabinetry.

Some of the most noteworthy features of the units include targeted temperature control and food-prep storage, which home chefs will love. There's also a 5-door refrigerator that takes organization to a new level: the KitchenAid KRMF706ESS 25.8-cubic-foot 5-Door French Door Refrigerator. With three pull-out drawers that offer custom temperature settings and a three-tiered freezer section, you certainly won't run out of room for your fresh and frozen food with this fridge. However, it is paired with a hefty price point, as are many KitchenAid fridges. You can shop for KitchenAid refrigerators online and in stores where other appliances are sold.

Where You Can Shop

Well-known brands like GE, LG, Samsung, Frigidaire, and KitchenAid are typically available in big-box stores such as Lowe's and Home Depot. Other lesser-known or luxury and style-driven brands, such as Bosch and Café, are typically available solely online. One of the perks of shopping in store is being able to experience the finish and features of certain models before deciding to take an appliance home with you. You can also browse in store, then wait for online sales to pop up on your favorite model. Online shopping often offers more flexibility on delivery and customization options that big-box stores may not.

So you can use this guide to find a fridge in a couple of different ways. You might go with one of the specific models we mention, or you might use the filtered search function on a retailer’s website: Home Depot, Best Buy, Lowe’s, AJ Madison, Appliances Connection, and many, many others offer handy tools.
