Lululemon Brand History

Founded by Chip Wilson in Vancouver, Canada in 1998, Lululemon is a yoga-inspired, technical athletic apparel company for women and men.  As the company grew, so did the number of stores and online presence, leading to the hugely successful brand we know today.

Lululemon's first designs were made for women to wear during yoga. Through plenty of feedback from their guests, ambassadors and elite athletes, they now design for yoga, running, cycling, training and most other sweaty pursuits for women and men. Not to mention, their designers are athletes and sweat-minded people, too. Their intention was to create athletic wear that was fashionable and comfortable for yoga, while also building a community where people could discuss health and fitness.

What is the difference between Lululemon Retail and Outlet?

1. Lululemon Retail vs Outlet Prices

  • Lululemon Retail / Boutique items' Prices

Lululemon is one of the most expensive athleisure brands in the market today. Lululemon stocks a wide variety of activewear, from leggings to sports bras and jackets that typically range from $90 to $130.

A retail store sells quality commodities, but at a standard retail price.  On Lululemon online offcial site, we can see Burberry items' retail prices:  Leggings: $59 - $138; Sports Bras: $29 - $178; Pants: $49 - $148; Coats & jackets: $59 - $1,200; Dresses: $69 - $178; Hoodies & Sweatshirts: $49 - $149; Pants: $49 - $148; Shirts: $19 - $159; Shorts: $29 -  $89; Skirts: $49-$68; Swimsuits: $29-$138; Accessories: $4-$198.

Why are Lululemon so expensive? On top of the high production costs, higher quality, and all the other factors that may increase product cost overall, Lululemon also maintains high prices for its items to uphold its image as a luxury brand. People are willing to spend more money on luxury brands because they are also paying for the brand name, which comes with exclusivity and symbolizes a higher socio-economic status.

  • Lululemon Outlet items' Prices

The specials of outlet usually change every day or every other day. They decide the specials based on what they have too much of in inventory.

The Lululemon outlet prices are actually pretty great. You will get a lot of items for a fraction of the price. However, it is important to mention that you need to be lucky. You will need to be lucky to find the items that you want and then to check if they have your size available. Items are marked down between 10-70% off. 2. Lululemon Retail vs Outlet Different Target Customers

  • Lululemon Retail's Customers

Lululemon's primary target customer is a sophisticated and educated woman who understands the importance of an active, healthy lifestyle. She is increasingly tasked with the dual responsibilities of career and family and is constantly challenged to balance her work, life and health.

Although their were founded to address the unique needs of women, they are also successfully designing products for men and female youth who appreciate the technical rigor and premium quality of their products.

  • Lululemon Outlet's Customers

Lululemon Outlet store offers shoppers lower prices and everyday bargains. The customers of outlet stores are usually who want great deals on items.

The specials are unbeatable, but you never know if they have the size and color you want. And not every outlet gets every item. If you are flexible and patient, the outlet is better. If you are married to a specific size and color, you should use WMTM.

3. Lululemon Retail vs Outlet Quality

  • Lululemon Retail items' Quality

Lululemon strives to make clothes that individuals can comfortably wear while exercising, stretching, or even carrying out day-to-day activities. It strives to use quality fabric that is elastic, breathable, does not easily fade after several washes, and does not pill. Therefore, it invests a lot of money in carrying out experiments to improve these fabrics. It uses various fabrics such as nulu, nylon, everlus, and lycra, depending on the purpose of the product being manufactured.

However, it mainly uses one known as luon, a combination of 86% nylon and 14% lycra, which they import from Taiwan.

The fabric is meant to wick away moisture when you sweat as you work out. They use special yarn techniques for fabric development and even claim that they had to synthesize fabric in 55 different ways before they eventually developed their current one. The majority of people who have purchased these products attest to the durability and performance of these clothes.

  • Lululemon Outlet items' Quality

It is important to check the quality at the items for sale. The reality is that many big stores tend to create outlets so that they can sell defective items for lower prices. Nevertheless, this isn't found on Lululemon's outlet stores. There are no damaged clothing and the staff tends to be very pleasant and helpful.

Lululemon outlet carry the same quality as regular lululemon stores, but they are stocked with items from WMTM. However, sometimes they run additional sales, so they are sometimes cheaper than the online WMTM prices.

Shopping Tips at Lululemon

1) If you're looking to treat yourself and splurge on that new, new, Lululemon adds new products to their website's “What's New” section every Tuesday around 6:15 p.m. It won't be discounted, but the retailer always starts with limited stock to drive up demand which means the item will most likely sell out. We suggest that you don't wait if it's something you desperately want and need.

2) Lululemon has its “We Made too Much” sale weekly, beginning every Thursday morning. This includes online and in-store discounts and apparently, the best time to shop online is 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. online, and mid-morning if you're shopping in-store.

3) The Lululemon outlet prices are actually pretty great. You will get a lot of items for a fraction of the price. You will need to be lucky to find the items that you want and then to check if they have your size available.

Most sizes left were 2, 4, 10 and 12. Sizes 6 and 8 were sprinkled throughout the assortment. Based on the photos, there was a good assortment of items that you would see in a warehouse sale and not necessarily in the We Made Too Much (WMTM) section of the website.

4) Sold out items can be purchased direct from any store in the country, plus free shipping. Waiting for something to go on sale can seem like a dangerous waiting game, since popular sizes will always sell out first.  If an item is sold out in your size, go online and select“find in store”. Next, call the store (within your country) and ask them to do a charge send. You will pay for the item over the phone and receive the in-store sale price. Best of all, the store will FedEx the item directly to your house for absolutely free. Lululemon will always price match if items in-store appear cheaper online.

5) It also seems that the stores arbitrarily price their items based on the volume of inventory and shopper foot traffic. We found the deals at the Miami outlet to be 100% better than the Orlando outlet. The Sawgrass Mills store, in particular, had plenty of great deals. The Flow Y Bras were only $24. In Orlando, the same bras were $39. Discounts at the Miami doors ranged from 10-60% off MSRP, which is better than WMTM.

6) You can also combine your Sweat Collective discount to save an additional 25% off your purchase at outlets. The Sweat Collective discount applies to fitness professionals only. You can apply here or in-store.

7) Shop Sales Racks in the regular stores: In addition to the Lululemon Athletica outlet, most of the Lululemon stores also have a sales section towards the back of the store, where you can find some markdowns.

8) Shop Gently Used Items: You can now shop the Lululemon Like New program, where they offer gently used Lululemon clothes at big savings.

9) Trade in Your Gently Used Lululemon Items for Lululemon Gift Cards! This is part of the Lululemon Like New Program. But rather than buying, you are trading in your gently used items for Lululemon gift cards, that they will then clean and resell in their Gently Used Shops. Find more information on this opportunity here.
