The Brief History of Missoma

Missoma is a direct-to-consumer jewelry brand based in the UK. Popular on Instagram (and with the royal family, for what it’s worth), their specialty is fine jewelry at an affordable price. Missoma was founded around the kitchen table by Marisa Hordern, her mother Michele and sister Sophie.

In 2007, founder Marisa Hordern quit her corporate job at luxury goods firm Richemont to turn her longtime jewelry-making hobby and childhood passion for gemstones into a business, despite not having any design training. Even with experience, trying to sell jewelry to millennials is quite a difficult task these days, but Hordern has done it by nailing the right combination of design, quality, price point, distribution, celebrity and influencer associations and social media savvy.

As one of the first ever demi-fine jewelry brands, they have been going since 2008. Designing all our unique and iconic pieces in-house at our London based Notting Hill HQ, they now ship to over 200 countries worldwide and partner with some of the world’s top retailers. The brand's success didn't happen overnight — and it's evolved quite a bit from its first iteration as a gemstone-driven wholesale brand — as it launched during the height of Boho in the mid-aughts.As they say, it takes 10 years to become an overnight success.

This London-based brand is a go-to for modern jewelry with timeless appeal, with fine jewelry in the mix too. Everything is meant to be layered: Pile on its necklaces and bracelets or rock an earful of studs, drops, and hoops. The brand also offers sets that make for excellent gifts or the perfect indulgence to make things easy, whether you’re into initials jewelry, gemstones, or gold chains. Not to miss is the label’s recycled metals collection, as well as trend-forward pieces designed in collaboration with influencer Lucy Williams. Now the brand is recognised globally, regularly featuring in publications such as Vogue and Grazia, and worn by well-known faces such as Gigi Hadid and Margot Robbie.

The Brief History of Monica Vinader

Born in San Sebastian, Spain, Monica is an artist, adventurer and designer. After studying Fine Arts in London, she was introduced to jewellery design at her first job. From there, she was hooked. She travelled the world for both work and sport until these travels and her love for accessible luxury merged into the eponymous brand she still runs today, beloved around the world for its simplicity, luxury and conscious creation. Her first breakthrough came in 2008, in the heart of the economic recession, when she created her now-famous Fiji bracelets.Monica followed her breakthrough bracelets with various other ring, necklace, and earring designs inspired by her travels in South America and the Far East.

Monica Vinader are quite a classic jewellery brand, Which aims to provide luxury, quality and unique design at an inviting price point. They are high end and luxe and can be worn by women of any age. The most striking feature of this brand is their designs use recycled gold vermeil, sterling silver and natural diamonds, gems and pearls. You can personalise many pieces, gift them as gifts, wear them every where and anywhere and layer them up to create different looks each season.

  • Very popular and trendy designs that bring together everyone from the British and Holywood royalties to everyday people and teens

The Brief History of Mejuri

Mejuri is what I like to think of as the American counterpart to Missoma. Equally as beautiful, dainty, and well-priced for the quality. Sakkijha founded Mejuri in 2013. The company initially engaged in crowdsourcing goods by working with and featuring jewelry designers across the world. After Lançon was brought on as Creative Director, Mejuri established its own fine jewelry collection and the direct-to-consumer brand re-launched in early 2015.

Mejuri’s motto is that luxury should be accessible rather than exclusive, and fun nonetheless. On its website, Mejuri says it “believes luxury should be accessible, fun, and part of your everyday,” and that its mission is to “have women embrace a daily dose of luxury.”

The Toronto-based label has garnered an impressive cult following from celebs like Kate Bosworth, Jamie Chung, and even Timothée Chalamet. In addition to A-listers, influencers are devoted Mejuri fans, too. Pieces are frequently worn on the likes of Jelena Cikoja, Amy Julliette Lefévre, and Sabina Socol. Mejuri’s pieces give away an ooze of luxury and grace, but without breaking your bank.

Mejuri has got everything from ring, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, to wedding jewelry. Mejuri’s repertoire is quite impressive in terms of how many products are available for customers.  It also has a (fairly sparse) chart explaining how the company avoids markups by building relationships directly with manufacturers, and a page outlining how it ethically sources its materials, including 14K solid gold, sterling silver, gold vermeil (a fancy term for gold-plated), freshwater pearls, gemstones, and diamonds. To this day, Mejuri operates on a direct to consumer business model, creating the finest accessories for customers at an affordable price.

Mejuri jewelry pros and cons

ProsCons
  • Great necklaces.

  • Quality is excellent (for most products)

  • Long lasting and supports ethical, sustainable living.

  • More high-end materials.

  • Both minimalistic and flamboyant designs.

  • Impressive repertoire of designs.

  • A lot of information on how to care for Mejuri’s products.

  • Jewelry is easy to layer and pair with other pieces.

  • Mejuri’s packaging is as fancy as the products themselves.

  • Offers engravable pieces as well.

Customer service is hit-or-miss

It’s difficult to not buy something all the time because of Mejuri jewelry’s dainty and beautiful collection.

The Brief History of Ana Luisa

Ana Luisa has hundreds of designs of earrings, necklaces, rings, and bracelets. The materials are typically sourced from recyclable sources, like industrial materials or previously owned jewelry. Ana Luisa is about as famous as Mejuri, and it is easy to see why. Most of the pieces are minimalistic and yet elegant. Ana Luisa is a bit more of a budget option when compared to the others, but that’s good, particularly if you’re looking for more affordable jewelry.

According to Ana Luisa, 100% of the jewelry with minor defects is donated to Dress for Success, an organization advocating for women’s empowerment.

To ensure the quality of the jewelry, limited batches are released every Friday, after going through rigorous testing. Chemical, physical, and on-site inspections are done to guarantee safe, nickel-free pieces of jewelry.

Ana Luisa jewelry pros and cons

ProsCons
  • Cost-effective.

  • Designs are minimalistic, stylish, and elegant.

  • A lot of options.

  • Some products lack quality and/or are poorly made.

  • Poor international return policy.

  • Some jewelry has been criticized for being, quote: ‘Cheap-feeling’.

Missoma vs. Monica Vinader vs. Mejuri vs. Ana Luisa: Comparison Side by Side

1.Price

Missoma - Most pieces are made with gold vermeil, meaning a sterling silver base plated with a thick layer of real gold, and in the $50-$200 range. New pieces and collections drop every few weeks.

Monica Vinader - Price from $55 for a silver chain to $5,995 for a diamond necklace.

This brand targets people with ages 20+ and the materials made for this brand are gold vermeil – a sterling silver base plated with a thick layer of real gold just like Monica Vinader's.

Mejuri - Mejuri's offerings start at $25 (which will get you a simple 14-karat gold stud) and go up to $4,000 for a choker necklace with 412 pavé diamonds.

Ana Luisa - The average price of Ana Luisa Jewelry ranges from $39 to $320. However, you can usually find good offers and discounts as high as 60% off on the website.

2.Material

Missoma - Most Missoma pieces are 18ct gold vermeil. This is a sterling silver base with gold plating. And unlike regular gold-plated jewelry, the outer layer is bonded with electrolysis for durability.

Monica Vinader - Monica Vinader manages to afford such low prices by using vermeil as her primary jewelry metal. Essentially, vermeil is gold-plated silver. While not a particularly prestigious alloy for high-end jewelry, it does ensure accessible prices. In 2020 the brand made a turn toward sustainability and began prioritizing materials like recycled sterling silver and recycled gold vermeil—as well as sustainably sourced diamonds, gemstones, and pearls.

Mejuri - The company claims to use only “high-quality” and “enduring materials,” like 14-karat gold, sterling silver, and gold vermeil (18-karat gold layered on sterling silver), along with ethically sourced diamonds and gemstones.

Ana Luisa - The materials are typically sourced from recyclable sources, like industrial materials or previously owned jewelry. The jewelry is made in sterling silver, brass, or 14K gold. To ensure the highest ethical standards, the diamonds are lab-grown.

Ana Luisa - When it comes to the designs, Ana Luisa is all about elegance. Their pieces exude classiness and stay trendy at the same time. Ana Luisa Jewelry caters to all ages with its sleek and stylish pieces.

4.Quality

Missoma - Most Missoma pieces are 18ct gold vermeil. The jewelry is good quality if you know how to care for it. To keep the price down, Missoma’s statement pieces are made of gold-plated brass metal with anti-tarnish on top. But Missoma’s website says not to swim or shower in gold-plated or silver jewelry, as this can tarnish it.

Monica Vinader - All Monica Vinader jewellery is made from recycled 925 Sterling Silver and 18ct gold. All the stones, pearls and diamonds are also sustainably sourced too. They also offer free delivery and free returns, all of which is 100% carbon neutral. Finally, they have designed each and every piece to be hard wearing, durable and timeless so that you buy your jewellery now and love it forever. This is not fast fashion, these pieces are designed to be worn and treasured forever. Each piece comes with a 5 year warranty too.

Mejuri - Each design goes through countless versions in partnership with our master jewelers to perfect settings, lengths, chain links, clasps, ring comfort, earring fit—no detail goes unnoticed or undiscussed—until the piece is exactly right. The expert jewelers then use the highest quality materials from precious metals—from certified recycled gold and 18k gold vermeil, to ethically sourced diamonds and AAA-grade gemstones.The 14k gold fine jewelry is an alloy that is specifically mixed to be worn every day, forever. In comparison to 18k gold, 14k gold is far more durable so you can sweat, shower and sleep in your pieces. It will scratch less and will continue to maintain its champagne-hued shine.

Ana Luisa - Some products lack quality and/or are poorly made. Can be improved.

The Verdict

I would say that this answer will depend on what you’re looking for. Every brand has its own uniqueness of taste and exemplary pieces.Whether you want to look royal or not, the important thing is that you choose whatever it is that makes you feel good about yourself.

While Ana Luisa is a budget option, the others offer some lesser high-end pieces which cost as much as the products from Ana Luisa. With that said, and with the complains about the poor quality, we think that you’re better off with the other three.

You choose an accessory that would represent you in your daily life. Because at the end of the day, a pair of earrings, a bracelet that is made of gold or a locket that would take you to a whole new level of jewelry is not important if you still do not feel good about your whole being.
