There are two main differentiators between the services as far as customers are concerned: price and service.

Fee:

The fee varies by restaurant. The price typically includes the cost of your meal, as well as tax, delivery fees, and an optional tip. Some restaurants charge additional service fees. Uber also expanded its prescription delivery partnership with Nimble and acquired alcohol delivery company Drizly.

Grubhub is available in more than 3,200 U.S. cities and London.

Fee:

The app is free to use, though some restaurants may charge a delivery fee and have a minimum order amount. GrubHub+ is a service where participating restaurants offer unlimited deliveries for a $10 per month subscription.

Postmates (iOS/Android)

Availability:

Postmates is currently available in more than 4,200 cities throughout the U.S. in all 50 states and D.C.

Fee:

Grubhub Vehicle Requirements

Cons:

The main drawback for restaurants is that every order that is delivered by a delivery person using the Uber Eats platform has a 30% marketplace fee on the pre-tax value of the order. This is a hefty percentage for restaurants to sacrifice.

DoorDash

DoorDash is one of the best options for restaurants in need of a delivery service for various reasons.

First, it has the largest share of the market and a wide range of locations, so plenty of customers can find you on DoorDash. Second, it has low commission fees for restaurants and low service fees for customers.

The company takes a commission of about 20% of the restaurant’s order, which is on the lower end of third party delivery services.

The fees for customers are on the lower end as well, although they vary by restaurant.

Pricing – Commission is negotiated with individual merchants upon sign-up, but according to one source, these can range from 15%-30%. Postmates Partners do get the added benefit of avoiding credit card processing fees, however, as they are paid directly by Postmates via direct deposit.

Postmates is unique in that they offer customers on-demand delivery from non-restaurant merchants as well. Consumers can order food delivery and a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of alcohol in many locations. Postmates also offers their restaurant partners flexibility when it comes to how they receive orders (via a point-of-sale system, by phone, tablet, etc.).

GrubHub/Seamless

Grubhub was the original online food delivery service, and used to hold the largest share of the market. Grubhub also owns Seamless, and the two share almost the exact same app. Grubhub also bought out other services like Eat24, Foodler, and OrderUp.

Grubhub works with so many different restaurants that their commission for restaurants has a wide range – anywhere from 15 to 30%. While 15% is one of the cheapest options for restaurants, 30% is on the higher end.

Grubhub doesn’t charge merchants an activation fee, and they provide a complimentary tablet for managing orders. Grubhub offers an array of marketing tools and educational materials for merchants, as well as access to promotions, rewards, and loyalty programs.

The customer fees on Grubhub range as well from low end to expensive, although these are often countered by delivery deals, discounts, and other perks.
