GoPro HERO 10, HERO 9, HERO 8 and HERO 7Review
| #1 GoPro HERO 10
As the newest addition to the HERO range, the GoPro HERO 10 Black looks identical to the Hero 9 Black in almost every way, but the internals has been given an impressive power boost. The camera is powered by an all-new GP2 processor and has enabled a host of improved video capture and still capabilities. With this additional power, it can shoot up to 5.3K at 60fps, 4K up to 120fps, or 2.7K up to 240fps and essentially doubling the frame rate of its predecessor. You can also not underestimate the usefulness of GoPro HERO 10 Black ’s new HyperSmooth 4.0 video stabilization – in all modes – alongside 23MP photos and best-ever low-light performance.
In addition, the Hero10's upgraded image stabilization, you can now tilt the camera as much as 45 degrees and it will still smooth things out for you. It also adds a nifty cable for super-quick camera-to-app content transfer and auto-upload of videos and photos to the cloud while it recharges. Finally, there is one almost invisible improvement to the hardware too: a hydrophobic, and more scratch-resistant lens cover that works an absolute treat. In a word, the GoPro HERO 10 Black is the best GoPro action camera around.
PROS | CONS |
Faster user interface | Heavy |
Powerful GP2 processor | Slightly more expensive than last year's flagship |
Big bump up in resolution and framerate | Mediocre battery life |
Horizon leveling up to 45-degree tilt
Excellent image stabilization
Front and back-facing displays
Removable lens | |
Hydrophobic lens coating
Media “Mods” add functionality
Backward compatibility with Hero9 accessories |
| #2 GoPro HERO 9
GoPro Hero 9 Black is the culmination of years of improving stabilization algorithms. HyperSmooth 3.0 builds on the Hero 8's capabilities by automatically stabilizing shakes and judders from your footage and making it impossibly smooth. Change direction suddenly and it'll smoothly pan, using a smart algorithm. Its dual-screen design is also ideal for vlogging, with a touchscreen on the back to adjust settings and another screen on the front that lets you see a live view of your recording to ensure you're always in frame. Video capabilities include 5K recording at 30fps, 4K up to 60fps, 1080p live-streaming as well as slow-motion 240fps, and a number of timelapse and hyper-lapse capture modes, including a Night Lapse photo option. It's the first GoPro to shoot video in 5k at up to 30 fps.
GoPro Hero 9 Blac also improved the audio too, putting a better microphone at the front of the camera as well building in water expelling channel to further improve its waterproofing versus the older models. In addition, GoPro Hero 9 Black also has a larger battery which lasts much longer than its predecessors. Thanks to its removable lens cover there’s also an option to add a Max Lens Mod accessory to the Hero9 Black, which will bring a few GoPro Max-style features including a 360º horizon lock and an ultra-wide 155º Max SuperView mode. Unfortunately, it has bad noise handling capability due to its small sensor. All things considered, compact size, front-facing screen, and impressive image stabilization make it one of the best GoPro.
PROS | CONS |
The superb image stabilization system | Bigger than the Hero8 and Hero7 |
Excellent 5K video and 20-megapixel photos | Not compatible with older batteries |
Built-in accessory mounts | Not as smooth and speedy as H10 |
Front preview screen | |
Native horizon leveling
Removable lens | |
Media “Mods” add functionality
Improved battery life |
| #3 GoPro HERO 8
The GoPro HERO 8 Black was a big upgrade on the H7, introducing a dramatically improved body and a host of other innovations. One of the biggest enhancements to the Hero 8 Black is down to the redesigned exterior and port layout: mods. GoPro has introduced three new mod add-ons that enable a more professional vlogging experience. Simply: you can now connect a shotgun microphone, LED light, and display mode so that you can light yourself in darker environments, get better audio recording and see yourself when shooting to the camera.
In addition, the HERO 8 comes with Hypersmooth 2.0 along with additional High and Boost settings to smooth out even the most rattly footage. Compare to the HERO 8's Hypersmooth, it works with more video settings — though not as good as HyperSmooth 3.0 and HyperSmooth 4.0 on the Hero9 and Hero10. Other upgraded features, includes TimeWarp 2.0, Night-lapse, and many more. However, you can’t remove or replace the camera lens like the previous models. In a word, the HERO 8 Black remains an excellent camera. It arguably delivers the best bang for the buck, and is probably the best GoPro for most people's uses.
PROS | CONS |
Practical new design | Removes built-in HDMI port |
The great image stabilization system | The lens is no longer removable |
Excellent 4K video | |
New built-in mount | |
New Media Mods | |
Media “Mods” add functionality
Smaller and lighter than the HERO 9 |
| #4 GoPro HERO 7
While the HERO 7 isn't the best GoPro around it's still a capable action camera, and will be plenty good enough for many people's needs. You can enjoy recording your fun moments using these amazing features like HyperSmooth, TimeWarp, SuperPhoto, and so on. This was the first of GoPro's action cameras to include the ability to record 4K video at 60 fps. It's waterproof to 33 feet, has a rear 2-inch color touch-screen LCD, and voice control. While not as effective as newer models, the Hero 7's image stabilization is still very good. HyperSmooth debuts on GoPro Hero7 Black, the basic version of GoPro’s image stabilization technology that brings a smooth, stable, flowing look to even handheld video.
What's more, the HyperSmooth-aided TimeWarp produces stunning time-lapse clips, even in the absence of the later upgrades. You can dial-in 1080p/240fps to harness the camera's ultra-high frame rate and add slick slo-mo cuts to your videos. GoPro HERO 7 Black can Livestream to Facebook using the GoPro app. But because of its older design, the Hero7 Black needs to be inserted into a case of some kind if you want to mount it to anything, and it won't work with some of the newer Mods. GoPro itself no longer sells GoPro HERO 7 Black directly now. It's an older model, so it may be a bit harder to find now, but it offers great value for the price. If you're on a budget, the GoPro HERO7 Black is the best GoPro camera to get.
PROS | CONS |
Portable, well-built design | Frame required for mounting |
Great 4K video and image quality | Software not quite as good as later models |
Incredible video stabilization performance
HyperSmooth feature impresses
TimeWarp is great fun | |
Easier-to-use touchscreen UI
More likely to attract a deal |
Bottom Line
All the four cameras — GoPro Hero 7 Black, GoPro Hero 8 Black, GoPro Hero 9 Black, and GoPro Hero 10 Black — are GoPro flagship cameras of their time. While there’s no doubt that the latest Hero 10 Black has the most advanced features, but it comes with a higher price tag.
If you want to save some money and don't mind missing out on some of the latest features of newer models, You can consider the GoPro Hero 7 Black or the Hero 8 Black . Compare to GoPro Hero 7 Black, Where the HERO 8 Black just has the edge is in terms of the expanded range of capture facilities and enhancements it offers. In addition, it does not need to be fitted into a frame before attaching to mounts or other accessories, which makes it far easier to use.
If you need an action camera with features like 5k video and a front-facing live view screen, then the GoPro HERO 9 Black and the HERO 10 Black are more suitable for you. Of course, the Hero 10 Black has a lot more under the hood than the Hero 9 Black. With faster frame rates available at higher resolution, there's a lot of flexibility to what you can do with it. Plus, with a hydrophobic lens and improved low-light performance, there's a lot to love about it.
