Ingredient Components

One of the biggest outstanding factors about this product is the fact that it is a blend of three different whey types. These products include the isolate, the concentrate, and the hydrolysate, in this specific order.

The rest of the other products include the artificial and natural flavors, the soy lecithin, to make it more mixable, lactase and Aminogen, which are digestive enzymes, and acesulfame potassium which is an artificial sweetener. These ingredients help greatly in reducing issues of digestion, such as flatulence, that often arise from consuming lactose.

Taste

Optimum Nutrition sells some twenty different flavors, and they know their chocolate. The line includes Double Rich Chocolate, Extreme Milk Chocolate, Chocolate Malt, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocolate Coconut, White Chocolate, and Rocky Road (that’s their chocolate and marshmallow flavor).

The most normal-sounding chocolate: Double Rich Chocolate. Despite the “double” in the title, it’s tasty without being overwhelmingly sweet or intensely flavored. It’s closer to a dark chocolate taste than milk chocolate. If you’re after a sweeter, creamier, more intense chocolate, you might prefer the equally popular Extreme Milk Chocolate flavor.

Some flavors from ON are nice as a one-off but easy to get sick of after a few shakes (e.g., Cake Donut). Double Rich Chocolate is ON’s standard, basic chocolate. It’s reliable and mild enough that it won’t overwhelm the palate, and consumers probably won’t get tired of it. Note that the flipside of this “low intensity” chocolate is that it’s very, very bland when mixed with water.

Origin

Optimum Nutrition, Inc. (ON) is part of the Glanbia global nutrition group and has been setting the Gold Standard in sports nutrition for more than 30 years - helping performance focused athletes achieve their goals.

With state-of-the-art production facilities in Middlesbrough, UK, Optimum Nutrition is one of the few sports nutrition companies to manufacture in every product category. From the very beginning in 1986, Optimum Nutrition has always taken a hands-on approach to maintaining the very highest standards of quality.

Before a single machine is turned on in their manufacturing facilities, Optimum Nutrition procurement professionals carefully select the most premium raw materials. A Certificate of Analysis is required for every ingredient, which is then tested and retested for compliance. Quality assurance performs daily inspections of their current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) compliant facilities, which are GMP registered. The Plant is also Informed Sport and Informed Choice registered and retains a Grade A BRC food Certificate. Optimum Nutrition is a Preferred Supplier to the English Institute of Sport (EIS).

Price

The Gold Standard costs about $30 for a total of 29 servings. This, therefore, means that for every serving, the price is $1.03, which then translates to 4.3 cents per gram of protein.

Taste

As with mixability, this powder tastes great in milk as well as water. The Gourmet Chocolate flavor was great. It’s very sweet and quite mild, so it made milk absolutely taste like a frothy, creamy shake. Even when mixed with water, it created a very pleasant and smooth textured drink. We have tried both Gourmet Vanilla and Gourmet Chocolate which was our favorite. Both were quite sweet, and if anything the vanilla was a tiny bit too sweet for us. If f you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, you might not enjoy this product so much.

Origin

Based in Dallas, Texas, and owned by Post Holdings, Inc., Dymatize manufactures all products in Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certified facilities and ensures only high-quality ingredients are used.

Pros & Cons

ProsCons
Easy to mix

Others find the taste too sweet

Fast and slow-digesting

Can be consumed morning, pre or post-workout, and at night

Gluten-free

Banned-substance tested

Certified by Informed Choice, a global quality assurance program for the sports nutrition industry.

Added extra minerals and vitamins

Ingredient Components

The main ingredients include:

  • Isolate whey protein concentrate and hydrolysate. Whey protein is probably the best-known protein powder and it is also the most complete. Many brands avoid including the concentrate in the blend, as claims are suggesting it doesn’t deliver the best results. However, in this combination, it doesn’t take away from the benefits of whey protein in general.

  • Micellar casein is a type of protein found in cow’s milk, is very quickly absorbed by the body, and it gives a boost of energy.

  • Egg albumin is useful in the post-workout recovery as it helps your muscles relax and repair.

  • A blend of digestive enzymes to help your body digest food and lactose specifically quicker and easier.

  • BCAAs, essential for muscle growth and recovery.

  • Sucralose and acesulfame potassium are two artificial sweeteners commonly used in protein powders. They are both calorie-free and do not harm your blood sugar.

Nutrition

You’ll be getting 24 grams of protein per serving, which is around the average for other similar products. It also contains 1.5 grams of fat, and 5 grams of carbs, 2 of which are sugar.

Taste

And speaking of taste, many consumers of Combat Whey powder praise the taste of the product. It can even be mixed with almond milk, vegetables, and fruits if you want. That means you can prepare great-tasting shakes and smoothies while adding this protein powder.

Who Should Buy the Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey

  • Athletes looking for a healthy portion of calories without all the added sugar and fat commonly found in mass gainers.

  • Those with budgetary restrictions or anyone needing a cheap source of protein.

Who Shouldn’t Buy the Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey

  • Customers who are looking for a protein source that streamlines calories.

  • Those looking for a wide variety of unique flavors.

  • People practicing a strict keto diet or otherwise avoiding carbs when possible.

  • Athletes who depend on label accuracy.

Ingredient Components

Super Advanced Whey Protein from Body Fortress is deceptively high in calories, at least in comparison to other whey protein powders.

With 200 calories per serving, each scoop has more calories than ON Gold Standard Whey (120 cals), MusclePharm Combat (130 cals), and MuscleTech NitroTech (160 cals), to name a few. The only protein powders that have more are the big mass gainers, which can deliver 1200+ calories per serving (ON Serious Mass Gainer), or ON Natural Oats and Whey (210 cals).

At 60% protein density, this is a protein powder that has more carbs than most, with 8 g per scoop. It also has one of the highest cholesterol levels we’ve seen from a protein supplement, with 125 mg per scoop (42% DV). This is considerably higher than the 5 mg (2% DV) that you get with Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydrowhey, which also delivers 30 g of protein per scoop.

Aside from high levels of cholesterol, Super Advanced Whey has low levels of sodium (110 mg, 5% DV), potassium (260 mg, 7% DV), and calcium (132 mg, 13% DV).

In addition to the macro and micronutrients, the ingredients list includes maltodextrin (sweetener), cocoa, natural and artificial flavors, and soy lecithin to improve mixability.

Taste

There are five flavors available: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, chocolate peanut butter, and cookies n creme. I only tried the chocolate flavor, and it’s notably more cocoa-y compared to Gold Standard, closer to dark chocolate than milk chocolate. It’s more like the earthy, bitter type of cocoa flavor, and what’s more is it sticks to the inside of your mouth when you drink it.

Origin

Body Fortress is made from USA. This whey protein is 100% pure and is manufactured in an FDA-approved facility. It is manufactured to a high quality and low residual moisture level and is produced in compliance with U.S.P. food quality standards.

Price

Two pounds also costs $30, but the serving size is over fifty percent larger. That means that two pounds just provides 18 servings at $1.66 per scoop or 5.5 cents per gram of protein.
