What are the adjustments and upgrades of the newly released iPhone 13 series compared to the previous generation iPhone 12 series? We will learn more from the following aspects:
Design
It is not difficult to find that the iPhone 13 series notch is 20% smaller compared to the iPhone 12 series. The rear cameras of the iPhone 13mini and iPhone 13 are changed from vertical dual cameras to diagonally arranged diagonally. The iPhone 13 Pro series lens has become thicker and larger (the diameter of the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max is 15.8mm, which is larger than the 12mm and 14.2mm of the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max). In addition, the flat stainless steel middle frame is designed with an anti-scratch and anti-wear design.
Colors
Once again Apple has chosen muted tones for its higher-end iPhones and more colorful options for the lower end. The iPhone 13 and 13 mini are available in classic black or white (which Apple now calls “Starlight” and “Midnight”), and the usual special edition red as well. The blue tone is a bit different from last year’s blue, and now there’s a new pink offering as well. The Pro and Pro Max, meanwhile, are finished in fancier tones like gold, silver, graphite, and a pastel Sierra Blue.
Size and Weight
The four models of the iPhone 13 series have exactly the same dimensions as the previous generation iPhone 12 series. But the thickness of iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 has increased from 7.4mm to 7.65mm, while the weight of iPhone 13 mini and 13 has increased to 140g (7g heavier) and 173g (11g heavier) respectively; the thickness and weight of the iPhone 13 Pro series are also has been increased. The iPhone 13 Pro has increased to 203g (16g heavier than the previous generation), and the iPhone 13 Pro Max has increased to 238g (12g heavier than the previous generation), and the thickness has increased from 7.4mm to 7.65mm.
Display
The display of the iPhone 13 series is basically the same as the display of the iPhone 12 series, both are made of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, and the resolution of the screen also remains unchanged. The only difference is that the brightness of the iPhone 13/13 mini OLED can reach 800 nits (upgraded by 28% compared to the iPhone 12/12 mini), while the previous generation iPhone 12 only has 625 nits. The brightness of the iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max can reach 1000 nits (upgraded by 25% compared to iPhone 12 Pro/12 Pro Max), and the display HDR can be as high as 1200 nits.
In addition, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max do boast one upgrade to their displays though: their refresh rate has doubled to 120 Hz, using a technology Apple calls ProMotion.
Chip
As usual, Apple has upgraded the brains of the operation – the iPhone 13 range is running the new A15 Bionic chip. The chip has 15 billion transistors, 2 performance cores, 4 energy-saving cores, and a 16-core neural engine, the speed is 50% faster. According to Apple, it is currently the fastest smartphone chip. The iPhone 13/ 13 mini uses a 4-core GPU (30% faster than the iPhone 12/ 12 mini), and the iPhone 13 Pro/ 13 Pro Max uses a 5-core GPU (50% faster than the iPhone 12 Pro/12 Pro Max).
Cameras
The iPhone 13/ 13 mini is equipped with a 1.7-micron pixel sensor element in the main wide-angle lens, which can collect 47% of the light and better improve the brightness effect. It is also equipped with the Sensor-Shift optics originally unique to the iPhone 12 Pro Max which makes video imaging more stable. In terms of video recording, the iPhone 13/13 mini can shoot 4K 60fps videos, and a new Cinematic Mode (film effect mode) is added to bring out different narrative effects through manual and automatic switching of focus.
The iPhone 13 Pro/ 13 Pro Max main lens has a 1.9-micron pixel photosensitive element, the aperture is upgraded to f/1.5, which is the largest photosensitive element in the history of the iPhone (compared to the iPhone 12 Pro/12 Pro Max, it is 2.2 times brighter for low-light shooting). The 13 Pro also has the Sensor-Shift optical image stabilization function.
The iPhone 13 Pro series ultra-wide-angle lens has also been upgraded, with a large aperture of f/1.8, and can support 2mm macro shooting. In addition, the telephoto lens has been upgraded to 77mm equidistant, bringing a 6x optical zoom effect, and a maximum15x digital zoom. The dual-lens iPhone 13/13 mini maintains the same aperture.
Storage
Apple has shifted the storage options up one slot – 128 GB is now the baseline, with 256 GB and 512 GB options available on all four iPhone 13 models. The Pro and Pro Max meanwhile, are available in a massive 1 TB option, which could be handy if you plan on shooting a lot of video in ProRes.
Battery
The iPhone 13 mini and Pro should last 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 mini and Pro, and the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro Max can last 2.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max. iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max can be used to play videos continuously for 17, 19, 22, and 28 hours, respectively. Due to the larger battery capacity, it takes 35 minutes to charge the iPhone 13 Pro Max to 50% quickly, and 30 minutes for the rest. All eight iPhones are also capable of 20W fast charging and 15W wireless charging – but you’ll need to buy separate chargers to make use of those.
Operating System
The iPhone 13 series comes preloaded with Apple’s latest operating system, iOS 15. This refresh changes the way notifications are presented, adds new capabilities to FaceTime, such as screen sharing, and improves detail in Maps, among other upgrades. Of course, the iPhone 12 line can be updated to iOS 15 too.
Price
The iPhone 12 and 12 mini have had a price drop of $100 each. It seems that Apple has discontinued the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max models, most likely to make the gap between generations seem larger. You could still find them elsewhere though, and they should be cheaper than the launch prices.
As for the iPhone 13 series, the iPhone 13 mini starts at $699 for 128GB of storage but goes as high as $999 for the 512GB version! The iPhone 13 is available for $799 and reaches $1099. The iPhone 13 Pro is available for $999 and reaches $1499. The iPhone 13 Pro Max with 1TB of storage retails for a whopping $1599, which qualifies it as the most expensive iPhone ever!
Conclusion
The major upgrades of the iPhone 13 series over the iPhone 12 series are:
Notch become smaller;
New A15 Bionic chip;
ProMotion display Technology for iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max;
Sensor-Shift optical image stabilization function;
Battery capacity increased;
The storage of the whole iPhone 13 series started with 128G.
