Design

The GHD’s design has an air (excuse the pun) of elegance. It weighs 600g. Dyson's Supersonic is much lighter at 465g. 

Yet, rather than feeling clumsy and oversized, this makes it feel sturdy, well balanced and only adds to its luxurious, solid-feeling aesthetic. It’s a fine line that GHD has managed to nail and one that few other brands can achieve.

This is, in part, due to the classy black matte finish and metal accents on its shell. There's a strip of shiny black plastic along the handle and the buttons – in red and black – add a premium touch. Even the filter looks refined and comes with GHD branding.

The GHD Air has a 2,100W motor and two heat and two power settings, plus a cold shot button. The motor’s quoted power is a tiny bit less than some of its rivals – namely the Remington Keratin Protect and BaByliss Diamond – while being on par with a number of cheaper models. It also has fewer settings than nearly all of its competitors, including those that cost more than half the price, and only ships with a single nozzle.

Performance

What the GHD Air lacks in settings it makes up for in performance. The motor produces a powerful blast of hot air: our hair dried in a good amount of time even on the lowest of the two heat and power settings. It wasn’t the fastest dryer we’ve used (that title goes to Dyson’s Supersonic), nor was it the slowest, averaging a little under four minutes to dry our hair after a shower, and after swimming. The GHD Air is also one of the quietest hair dryers we’ve tested, which is surprising given the power on offer.

When it comes to styling, the extra size and weight can make the whole process a little unwieldy and we often struggled to get the exact angle we were after when blow drying the ends of our long hair with a large barrel brush. We often had to resort to straighteners (GHDs, to be precise) after blow drying in order to finish off our style. We doubt people with short hair, or particularly long arms, would have this trouble though, but it’s worth pointing out.

After rough-drying our hair, using just our fingers and no attachments, our hair was a little frizzier than we’d hoped and lacked the smoothness and shine as other dryers we’ve tested – notably the Remington Keratin Protect and Dyson’s Supersonic. However, when we added the nozzle, this was no longer a problem. It made a vast difference and our hair felt soft and looked shiny. We’d have preferred a choice of nozzles, to add a bit of variety to our style but the nozzle it does come with is a decent attachment. Our one complaint about the nozzle is that it had a tendency to slip and move around the hotter it got. You need a little bit of movement in order to change the angle when styling different sections of hair yet the GHD Air's nozzle moved mid-section. We'd be pulling the hair through the brush and the nozzle would twist, slowing us down. This heat also meant it was difficult – and a little dangerous – to remove the nozzle straight after use. We like to style our hair with the nozzle and then remove it and blast the hair with cold air from the Cool Shot button. This wasn't possible with the GHD Air.

Design

By using a much smaller and more efficient V9 digital motor – the company’s smallest in fact – Dyson has been able to move the motor from the head of the dryer into its handle. This redistributes the weight, and makes the entire thing much more compact. 

Instead of a lengthy barrel and a clunky system of rotors, filters and vents, Dyson has shrunk the V9 motor in the Supersonic down to roughly the size of a 10 pence piece and placed it at the bottom of the handle with a rubber mount. This sleek, thin handle extends to a circular ring, with two buttons on the shaft – the power, and cold shot buttons – and two on the rear of the ring; one that controls its three air speeds, another for selecting one of its three temperature settings.

The Dyson Supersonic should feel heavier than it does, due to its 659g weight, but this repositioning of parts means its weight is spread out more evenly than with traditional dryers. 

This significantly reduces arm ache during use and, thanks to its smaller barrel and more streamlined design, it means you can hold the dryer closer to your hair without trying to find awkward positions when blow drying. The rubber mount in the handle reduces the amount of vibration making it more comfortable to use for long periods. The downside to having the filter in the handle is that we often blocked it with our hand.In addition to making the dryer lighter and easier to hold, the Supersonic’s much smaller motor can propel 13 litres of air per second, and spins around eight times faster than the motors used in standard hair dryers, which Dyson says makes it more efficient, and much less likely to overheat and burn out. 

The Supersonic also has a glass bead thermometer that monitors its temperature 20 times per second, and transmits the data back to a microprocessor to make sure the heat remains consistent.

All this means you won’t have to deal with that metallic burning smell that you sometimes get when you use other hair dryers for a long period of time. And you also won’t have to deal with the worrying smell of burning hair, as the microprocessor keeps the airflow temperature stable and under 150 degrees no matter what.

Human hair is going to be damaged by brushing and heat no matter what, but past 150 degrees Celsius the damage becomes irreversible and more noticeable, so by keeping airflow temperature in the optimal safe zone and instead upping the airflow pressure the Dyson Supersonic is able to prevent this.

There are three heat settings and three airflow power settings to choose from, and they’re all found on the back of the dryer, with temperature settings on the left and fan speed on the right.

Though the buttons are small, neat, pleasant to press and look good here, their placing is slightly less convenient than on the BaByliss Turbo Power 2200 dryer. On the BaByliss the corresponding buttons are found on the handle, where it’s fast to switch between different modes using your thumb; on the Dyson we found we had to use both hands and look at the device to be absolutely certain  which setting we were on.

This isn’t a problem if you’re inclined to keep to the same setting the entire time you’re drying your hair, but if you like to change settings as you go for more engaged styling then it’s not ideal.

The power and cool air buttons, however, were much more conveniently positioned, on the handle and within easy thumb reach.

Performance

Despite being quieter than most of its competitors, the dryer lives up to its name with its hit of power. With a sound more akin to a sci-fi jet than a hair dryer, the Supersonic emits a high-velocity stream of controlled air to dry locks in seconds. 

A clever heat-control feature that regulates every 20 seconds, as well as four different degree options, also maintains an optimum temperature, so that hair dries without being frazzled, making for a shinier finish. 

User Experience

STEP 1: Begin blow drying your hair at a low temperature. Make sure you do not keep the heat on one spot for too long, as this will definitely damage that hair. Keep the dryer in constant motion by slowly shaking your wrist, directing the airflow up and down. Work through your hair until it's about 40% dry.

All the Supersonic, GHD Air Hair Dryer, and Parlux 385 cut drying time in comparison with most of their competitors, with powerful motors setting hair into place in seconds and flattening out frizz while pushing up roots to boost volume. 

If you’re going to push us to choose, at a push we’d say the sophistication of the Supersonic makes it a winner in our eyes. The enhanced features and futuristic look will make any beauty fan feel as though they’re ahead of the game, and the magnetic nozzles are the convenience we never knew we needed but now can’t live without.

We did also find that hair was slightly softer to touch after using the Dyson, which could perhaps point to the temperature control working behind the scenes to leave hair healthier. It was also more comfortable to use than the GHD Air Hair Dryer, and Parlux 385, given its compact design and clever weight distribution, so if you’re someone who properly blows out your hair on the regular, then we think it’s worth the investment.
