Road Trip from Albuquerque to Colorado Springs

San Miguel Chapel (Santa Fe)

San Miguel Chapel, the oldest church in the United States. The earliest documentation of the churches existence is from 1628, so it is assumed to be built before that time. From the outside it looks like it was made in the Southwest style and born of the very dirt and dust that surrounds it. It looks old, but this is actually a restoration job. New mud on old adobe bricks.

Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge (Maxwell)

Beautiful lakes and fishing ponds. There are a number of fishing areas in Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge. There are some snakes and so many different species of birds in the refuge. So you'd better bring your binoculars on this road trip because you’ll need them. The campsites are primitive with 2 pit toilets at entrance. It can easily fit a large RV (room for 2-4 depending on size). The campsite sits on the shore of Lake 13. Usual stay 3 days.

Louden-Henritze Archaeology Museum (Trinidad)

A nice small museum full of local archaeological info is found here. Full of interesting information that is very well presented. The exhibits covering the geology and climate/vegetation are better than similar exhibits at larger museums. The information on the archeology in the area is really interesting.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

Great Sand Dunes National Park is one of Colorado’s best kept secrets.  Bring your sled and your beach umbrella to Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve 37 miles from Alamosa, Colo, and explore the tallest sand dunes in North America. The large, main dunefield covers about 30 square miles, but there are many more square miles of smaller dunes in the sand sheet surrounding the main dunefield. The park’s largest dune is Star Dune, which rises 750 feet from its base to its crest.
