La Palma, nicknamed Isla Bonita (beautiful island), is known for the laid-back nature of its residents and its spectacular landscapes. The highest point on the island is Roque de los Muchachos, over 2,400 m above sea level. This is the site of the Observatory, where you can enjoy a perfect panoramic view of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, especially at dawn. Caldera de Taburiente is one of Spain's 15 national parks, and one of its most unique ones at that, given that it was formed by erosion from the old Taburiente volcano. The result of the volcano's collapse is a giant crater (8 km at its widest) housing hills and dales of 600 m to 900 m above sea level. Explore the natural water features, such as the 150 m Desfondada waterfall and the small but lovely Puerto de Tazacorte beach.
