Nike Zegama 2 Review

When the first Nike Zegama launched in 2022, it was the first trail running shoe to feature Nike’s bouncy ZoomX midsole foam. The first Zegama was a strong entry but in particular called for improvements in traction. The Nike Zegama 2 is a highly anticipated update that I feel completely outshines the original model.Nike markets the shoe for endurance purposes.

The update keeps the original shoe’s soft, energetic ZoomX foam in the midsole while adding a layer of SR-02 foam to improve stability. Updated full-length ZoomX foam midsole geometry provides enhanced stability and responsiveness.Further, the outsole made with Vibram Megagrip has a diverse lug pattern highlighted with wide spacing. This means you get traction for more technical terrain. The upper is a single layer engineered mesh with a vamp liner focused on breathability and drainability. It also sees a wider footbed. And the 4-millimeter drop strikes a nice middle ground for mostOptimal cushioning complements a rugged outsole made for your trail running journey.

All in all, if you’re sold on a max-cushion design but want to retain as much technical prowess as possible, I really like what the Zegama 2 has to offer.Despite its weight and the higher price tag of $180, I think it's definitely one of the best trail shoes in the market right now.

Nike Pegasus Trail 5 Review

Looking at Nike’s trail lineup, the Pegasus Trail is the clear all-rounder, sliding in next to the durable Wildhorse.Modeled after the road-specific Pegasus but infused with trail features (including a mostly rubber tread and reinforcements in the upper), this is one of the best road-to-trail shoes in the business.

The  Pegasus Trail 5 gets a new React X midsole foam which is injected rather than compression molded and which has reduced the midsole’s manufacturing carbon footprint by 43%.React X is a soft and kind of spongy foam with claimed 13% increased energy return. You don’t get that low-slung feel that many runners love for particularly technical trails, but the Pegasus Trail 5 offers a great fit for most (with a roomier toe box than many Nike models), and the latest version is lighter than its max-cushioned frame would suggest. The outsole, designed for all surfaces including some pavement, is a new Nike Trail All Terrain Compound (ATC) high abrasion rubber. The upper is a engineered mesh with zonal breathability, denser knit in high wear areas at the big toe and midfoot and an updated midfoot containment with Flywire. This version is 10 to 15 unnoticeable grams heavier than the previous.

The Nike Pegasus Trail 5 is a stylish road to trail shoe that meets the needs of runners who want the versatility to transition from the city streets to dirt roads and mellow singletrack.

  • Get dirty easily.

  • Outsole rubber is much improved (but still not perfect).

Nike Ultrafly Review

The Ultrafly trail is certainly one of the fastest on the market but it’s limited use, focus, and high price tag will make it a hard sell for most runners.

It features a full Zoom X midsole but unlike its road racers is wrapped in a tight outer fabric that helps to stabilize and protect it.A carbon fiber Flyplate sits in the midsole and provides a surprisingly smooth transition at a variety of places and stabilizes the shoe decently well. Perhaps the most welcomed change is the addition of a Vibram MegaGrip outsole that aims to provide consistent dependable traction. The upper features a thin but secure mesh with a wider toe box, lower volume fit, and secure midfoot/heel. The tongue is well padded, and the lace bite has minimal interaction with the top of your foot. The Ultrafly Trail is not a short-distance racer and instead excels as an ultramarathon racer that provides maximum comfort and efficiency over any adventure ahead.

Nike Wildhorse 10 Review

The Wildhorse model has traditionally been the daily trainer of the Nike Trail line. The Nike Wildhorse 10 is the newest iteration of the Wildhorse.Designed for long distances and unpredictable terrain, this rugged trail shoe delivers comfort, stability, and protection for the most demanding mountain adventures.

At the core of the Wildhorse 10 is Nike's ReactX foam, a significant upgrade from its predecessor. This new foam not only enhances your run with 13% more energy return but also with 3 mm more stack height underfoot. Your feet will appreciate this superior cushioning that ensures comfort on even the longest runs.Nike has also revamped the upper to reduce weight and enhance breathability. The engineered mesh provides targeted zones of durability where you need it most, while keeping your foot cool and supported. The streamlined design reduces unnecessary layers, cutting down on weight while maximizing comfort. Additionally, the ankle collar keeps debris out, so you can stay focused on your run without worrying about what's underfoot. The outsole features Nike's All Terrain Compound (ATC), which is ready to deliver reliable traction across wet, dry, and rocky surfaces. The wider base adds more stability, while strategically placed 4 mm lugs offer grip during ascents and braking power on descents. That way, you're always in control no matter the conditions.

Whether setting out for a peaceful jog in the woods or tackling unpredictable terrain, this versatile trail shoe offers the comfort, protection, and traction you need to embrace the wilderness.
