Non-alcoholic drinks are becoming more and more popular!

The world of alcohol-free drinks has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years. With lots of younger drinkers opting for a more mindful approach to what they're sipping on, there's been an influx of amazing new alcohol-free beers, wines, spirits and funky alternatives.

While some are no doubt turning to low/no alcohol options to support a sober lifestyle, others are motivated by health reasons and a desire to simply reduce rather than eliminate their alcohol consumption.

Consumers today want more choices when it comes to beverages. They are conscious of drinking "better not more" and balancing alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. According to Google Trends, searches for "benefits of quitting drinking" have increased by 70% in the last five years and globally consumers explicitly mention "non-alcoholic" 81% more often than they did one year ago. Who is best suited for non-alcoholic drinks?

The first one is millennials – they’re making much better life choices. Alcohol for them isn’t hedonism and excess, it’s indulgence and enjoyment.

Alcohol consumption is reducing, with millennials drinking 20 per cent less than their parents at the same age, and consumers are making healthier choices across a number of indulgent food and beverage categories without having to compromise on taste and social experiences.

Then we’ve got women who are pregnant. I’m of the age where everyone is having kids or has had kids, and when I explain this range to them they have two questions – what does it taste like and when can I buy it?

For them, there’s a lot of ritual around that evening drink when you go home, wind down and pour yourself a G&T, Bourbon and coke or whatever it is that is your choice. 

And that’s a really important moment when a couple will bond, share a drink, share stories of their day and move on. But a lot of people are now saying ‘I don’t actually want to drink during the week’ or ‘I want those alcohol-free days’, and this is giving them a real alternative.

They can still enjoy that flavour and enjoy that occasion, that pageantry and theatre around it, but without the alcohol.

They will attract is those who are partaking in a period of abstinence, either for events like Dry July or as part of an overall fitness program.

One of the things that people are loving when we describe the range to them is ‘I can still take on those challenges and transform my body, but I don’t need to sacrifice this part of my life, which is really important for me in terms of decompression and social glue’.

Then we have the boomer population. For that particular generation there is a real importance in ducking down to the pub or other social events like bridge club. So it’s really important that we can continue to offer them the beverages that they’ve grown to love over the course of a lifetime and that they find synonymous with letting go and social indulgence and connecting with other humans. We can continue to offer that to them, albeit without alcohol included.

Dhōs Gin Free is my favorite.

Spiritless, the Louisville-based, female-led nonalcoholic drink company, was founded in 2019 by three innovate entrepreneurs.

Named for Spiritless being the 74th distillery in the state, Kentucky 74 is made with a grain-neutral spirit and select chars of oak for an extraction process to pull the oak flavors into the spirit. 

What results is an extremely high-proof and intensely flavored spirit that is then reverse distilled to evaporate all but 0.5% of the alcohol. 

The drink remaining retains the flavors from the oak extraction process and is pH-adjusted for shelf-stability before being bottled.

Because it’s made with grain-neutral spirits, Kentucky 74 can be made consistent with every batch, and the negligible alcohol content leaves it at the same ABV as kombucha. 

Kentucky 74 is described as having a smooth finish, underpinned by familiar notes of caramel, vanilla and oak.  

The end product is a smooth, spirit like liquid with all the depth of bourbon, just minus the alcohol.
