The first layer is a polycarbonate shell that deflects impacts away from your phone. The second layer, a synthetic rubber slipcover, keeps your iPhone from sliding off the table or falling out of your back pocket. Otterbox Defender vs. Commuter vs. Symmetry vs. Defender Pro: Side by Side Comparision
1. Design
The design of both the Defender Pro and Defender series is very similar, and both provide an amazing amount of protection. To be honest, they are almost both the same size. However, the Otterbox Defender Pro does weight a few more grams because of the extra thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) that covers the Apple Logo. There are several layers to the Defender Pro including the polycarbonate outer shell in addition to a thick rubber outer jacket as well as an inner foam layer. You’ll find several layers on the Otterbox Defender as well but it doesn’t have as many as the pro version.
The Commuter series feels like a compromise between the rugged extra protection of the Otterbox Defender series and the trim, pared-down style of the Symmetry Series. It doesn’t have the Defender’s belt clip holster or the built-in screen protection, but in return, it has a less bulky size.
The Symmetry series takes the lead when it comes to design and style. The main allure of it is its ability to pack solid protection into a slim and trendy design. It is available with printed designs. Like many of Otterbox’s cases, it combines the hard protection of polycarbonate with the soft cushioning effect of rubber.
2. Texture
When it comes to the texture of the case, itʼs hard to beat the TPU covers of the Otterbox Defender and Defender Pro. Between the Otterbox Defender and Defender Pro, the biggest obvious difference in texture is the removal of the Apple cutout on the Otterbox Defender Pro. If you look closely at the TPU cover, youʼll see the Otterbox Defender Pro has a lot more texture which theoretically will enhance the grip on the case. however, Otterbox Defender still does offer a good amount of grip.
The Otterbox symmetry consists of smooth cases that easily slip in and out of your pocket. Since it provides less resistance, its buttons are also easy to press and control. While the bulkier, somewhat more textured commuter series is great for the extra grip they add to your phone. Making it less likely for you to drop your phone. However, it also makes it more difficult to grab from your pocket with ease.
3. Protection
With no doubt that a bulky case is going to offer more protection to your phone than a thin case – regardless of what it is made from. Both Defender Pro and Defender are fairly bulky and they will both provide a high level of protection to your phone if you drop it.
The Otterbox Defender Pro uses a polycarbonate shell, synthetic rubber slipcover, and a polycarbonate holster to protect your device. The polycarbonate outer shell has a built-in screen protector as well adding even more screen protection. The Defender Series uses three layers to provide protection. There is a polycarbonate outer shell, the specialized rubber slipcover, and the integrated screen protector. The Defender Pro is probably going to offer a bit more protection due to the extra layers that it has.
The difference between Defender series and Commuter series is that Commuter series doesn‘t come with a built-in screen protector and only offers two layers of protection which works by absorbing impacts and deflecting sharp objects.
Compared to the Otterbox Symmetry series, the Commuter series will offer more protection due to its double-layered design.Though with that extra protection comes a bigger size. It also has a port cover that protects your phone’s charging port from debris. The Symmetry series case is single-layered and a lot slimmer which makes it easy to install and remove. The most important thing to remember with the Symmetry Series is that the main goal is to reduce the size, the second goal is to protect your device.
4. Features
Each Otterbox Series case has different features to choose from for added usability. The Defender and Defender Pro cases have a belt clip option, making it easier to carry your device around with the thicker cases.
The Commuter series is very simple with very few add-ons available. However, the design focus is where you'll find most of the features, like the bumper guard for the display or the accent on the back to make gripping the case easier.
The Symmetry Series case is where you'll find many built-in features. For example, the Symmetry case is made of antimicrobial material and has a popular socket built into it in a unique design. The pop socket makes it easier to hold your device while streaming or just making calls.
5. Functionality
Due to its bulky size, the Otterbox Defender Pro and Defender will give you some trouble reaching your phone’s buttons. In addition, the screen protectors of Defender and Defender Pro would suck the joy out of using your iPhoneʼs screen. Comparatively, the Commuter felt like a significant improvement, but it still had its drawbacks in terms of size and functionality. The symmetry series offers less resistance when using your phone’s control buttons. You will be impressed by how responsive the covered buttons are. So, ultimately, the Symmetry case is better to interface with, winning it the title of best functionality.
6. Color Options
The Defender series for iPhone 14 Pro Max have 4 color options, that is Black, Blue, Pink and Navy. The Commuter series for iPhone 14 Pro Max offers 5 color options, such as Black, Blue, Fuchsia, Green and Pink. The Symmetry series for iPhone 14 Pro Max can chooseBlack,Brown, Clear, Purple and Silver color. The Defender series for iPhone 14 Pro Max offer the same color options as The Defender series.
Conclusion
Otterbox Defender vs. Commuter vs. Symmetry vs. Defender Pro: Which to Choose for My iPhone 14 Pro Max?
There is no doubt that Otterbox's all four case series can protect your smartphone from high drops to everyday bumps. Ultimately, your particular tastes and needs will determine which case is the best case for your iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Both the Defender and Defender Pro from Otterbox provide a high level of protection to your iPhone 14 Pro Max. They are an excellent choice for someone who values protection above all else or need a cover for your phone when taking part in outdoor pursuits like hiking, climbing, hunting, and kayaking.
Defender Pro is a jump up from the standard Defender model which offers extra layers of protection. It is able to absorb shocks from a higher height. The fact that it comes with the unique OtterArmor Microbial Defense feature too is an added bonus. It is a better option than Defender if you are often climbing / working at significant heights OR have some use for the microbial defense feature.
If you rarely take your iPhone 14 Pro Max into overly-risky situations, Otterbox Symmetry and Commuter will more suitable for you. The main difference between Symmetry and Commuter is that Commuter offers more protection with less aesthetic appeal. For instance, the Commuter series offers a dual-layer construction and the port cover over the lightning port. It is very much durable in the long run. So, if a higher level of protection is super important to you, the Otterbox Commuter may be a better choice for you.
In fact, the Symmetry series’ raised edge and sturdy construction still does an excellent job of keeping your iPhone 14 Pro Max safe. What's more, it also has a more stylish design. So if you want something stylish with more options, the Otterbox Symmetry is your way to go.
