Are Robot Vacuums Worth It?

A robot vacuum is usually higher in price than a traditional vacuum (though not always). The models listed here range from less than $200 to more than $1,000. That's a pretty sizable investment, even on the lower end. Let's consider just what you get for the price.Unless you really love to vacuum, the task itself is pretty mundane. Depending on the size of your house, a robot vacuum can save you anywhere from minutes to hours of your time every week by taking care of a pretty thankless chore. That alone is reason enough for some people to consider one.

Robot Vacuums vs. Canister and Upright Vacuums

Unlike more traditional canister or stick models, robot vacuums are autonomous and (for the most part) intelligent. The vacuums we've tested are equipped with lasers, motherboards, sensors, and even Wi-Fi to navigate around your home without the need for assistance. With a few exceptions, you barely have to interact with them at all. Most robot vacuums come with charging docks and can even charge themselves. Just pick a robot-accessible spot for the dock, and the bot will return on its own before it runs out of juice. When it does, it will sit there until it has enough energy to go back out and continue to bust dust from where it left off. You can also set schedules for most bots to wake up and start a cleaning job, so it can take place while you're out of the house. That means you can potentially avoid all physical interaction until the vacuum needs to be emptied.

If you’re new to the world of robot vacuums, the $299.99 iRobot Roomba 675 is a good place to start. iRobot is one of the most respected names on the market, and the Roomba 675 is the company's most affordable model with Wi-Fi connectivity. The best robot vacuum for pet hair on carpet is the iRobot Roomba S9+. Unlike some of its competitors, this very well-built model doesn't have a problem maneuvering on low and high-pile carpet. It can easily pick up pet hair from either surface type, which makes it a handy tool for a carpeted home, and it has a HEPA filter to help trap allergens while it cleans. Thanks to its iRobot Home companion app, you can schedule cleaning times for different rooms as well as set virtual boundary markers to keep it out of some spaces. It can also automatically adapt to different surface types and detect messes so that it can focus more of its power to get those spots clean. It has a remarkable battery performance as well, and even in its most powerful suction mode, it lasts just under 50 minutes before it returns to its dock to charge. If you're looking to clean up small and large debris on carpet, it offers a very good overall performance on both low and high-pile carpet.

PROS

  • Self-emptying dustbin.

  • Ultra-powerful suction.

  • Smart navigation.

  • Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

CONS

  • Expensive.

3.Roborock S6 Vacuum

Price & Where to Buy:$969@Walamrt

Source:Walmart

The Roborock S6 is a good overall robot vacuum. Just like the Roborock S4 and Roborock S5, it has a battery life of between two to three hours depending on its suction levels. It can easily clean all kinds of debris on bare floors, and even though it struggles with both small and large debris on carpet, it still does an alright job overall. It also has a mop feature that can help clean wet spills or stuck-on grime; however, we don't currently test this. Its low size allows it to maneuver easily under tables or couches, and it's light enough for you to carry it to another floor for cleaning. On the downside, it has demanding maintenance needs and parts of it need to be replaced every few months, depending on your usage.

PROS

  • Effective smart pathing feature.

  • Picks up pet hair on all surfaces.

  • Exceptional performance on bare floors.

CONS

  • Struggles to pick up small and large debris.

  • Many recurring costs and it requires ongoing maintenance.

4.Roborock E4

The Roborock E4 is the best robot vacuum for pet hair . It has no issues clearing pet hair on everything from hardwood flooring to densely-packed shag carpeting, thanks to its self-adjusting suction power feature. It's equipped with a HEPA filter that should reduce the spread of allergens as it cleans, which is great if you have a heavily-shedding pet. It's impressively well-built, with dense plastic construction and durable rubber wheels that allow it to maneuver smoothly on carpeted surfaces. Battery life is outstanding, as you should expect it to run continuously on its highest power mode for just under two hours. If used more conservatively, you can expect that figure to extend to over three hours. While it doesn't have the LIDAR system found in more expensive robot vacuums, it still does a great job of maneuvering around various obstructions.

PROS

  • Outstanding performance on bare floors.

  • Very good build quality.

  • Great maneuverability.

  • Remarkable battery life.

CONS

  • Many maintenance needs.

  • High recurring costs.

5.Ecovacs Deebot N79S

Price & Where to Buy:$139.49@Amazon

Source:Amazon

Even if you hate cleaning, shelling out several hundred dollars for a robot vacuum can seem a little extravagant. In addition to long battery life and manual steering, it supports features we typically see in far more expensive models such as app control and Amazon Alexa compatibility. It also delivers a stronger clean than other vacuums we've tested in this price range, earning it our Editors' Choice. The circular N79S is pretty basic in terms of looks. At 13.9 inches in diameter, it's slightly wider than the Eufy RoboVac 11 and the iLife A4s (12.2 inches). But it stands at a relatively short 3.3 inches, meaning it should fit under all but the lowest-clearance furniture. It's not exactly eye-catching, but its dark chocolate color should blend in well with most home decor.

PROS

  • Affordable.

  • Powerful suction.

  • App control.

  • Amazon Alexa compatibility.

CONS

  • Finicky Wi-Fi setup.

  • Minor navigation issues.

6.Eufy RoboVac 11s

Price & Where to Buy:$229.85@Walmart

The RoboVac 11s looks very similar to the original RoboVac 11. Its circular body is darker in color, which makes the Eufy logo at the bottom slightly less noticeable. It's also smaller, measuring 12.8 inches in diameter and 2.8 inches tall, compared with the original's 13.0-inch diameter and 3.0-inch height. That makes the RoboVac 11s the shortest robot vacuum we've tested, and perfect for getting under especially low coffee tables, couches, and media consoles. You no longer have to spend a fortune to get an excellent robot vacuum. The Eufy RoboVac 11s is an update to one of our favorite budget models, the RoboVac 11, and delivers powerful, efficient cleaning performance in a more compact form factor for the same $219.99. While you won't find advanced features like app or voice control, the RoboVac 11s is one of the quietest vacuums we've tested, and small enough to clean under just about everything in your home.

PROS

  • Affordable.

  • Compact.

  • Quiet.

  • Strong cleaning performance.

  • Good battery life.

CONS

  • No virtual barriers or app control.

  • Limited scheduling options.

7.iLife A9 Robot Vacuum

Price & Where to Buy:$209.99@Walmart

1607138740899812.png

Source:Walmart

If you’re looking for a relatively affordable robot vacuum you can control with your phone and voice, the iLife A9 is a solid option. It effectively cleans hard floors and low-pile carpet, and offers premium features found in pricier models, such as Wi-Fi connectivity, Amazon Alexa voice support, and the ability to map your home for efficient navigation. There has several cleaning modes: Auto, Edge, Max, and Spot. In Auto, which you’ll likely use most of the time, it cleans in a methodical path, making straight lines like you would when mowing grass. Edge mode is for borders and corners, while Max mode delivers extra suction power for small areas with set-in dust. In Spot mode, which is designed for larger areas with concentrated dust and debris, the robot makes a spiral path.

PROS

  • Cleans efficiently

  • Quiet

  • Good battery life

  • Low-profile design

  • Supports app and voice control

CONS

  • Not the best on medium-pile carpet

  • Max mode drains battery quickly

  • Missed some dog hair in testing
